Implicaciones culturales en la interpretación de referencias sexuales en el ámbito social

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and describe certain aspects of language whose knowledge, expression and reception affect the social and cultural field rather than what’s purely formal; that is to say, sometimes we may understand the words but we may not understand the implicit message or we may even dismiss some kind of linguistic constructions because they are seen as strange or anomalous and therefore not very significant from our own social and cultural perspective, even though such constructions may be highly significant from the speaker’s point of view and their social and cultural context.In order to highlight this kind of linguistic constructions, I will address those references and expressions with sexual content that required to be translated from Arabic to Spanish when interpreting on the public services context. That is why this paper will focus exclusively on interpretation, given that, unlike translation, interpretation requires the physical presence and effectiveness of the three players in communication, namely: the service provider, the user of such service and the interpreter.El objeto de este trabajo es analizar y describir algunos aspectos de la lengua cuyo conocimiento, expresión y recepción incumbe al ámbito social y cultural, más que lo puramente formal; es decir, que en ocasiones podemos entender la totalidad de las palabras sin captar el mensaje implícito o, incluso, podemos rechazar algún tipo de construcción lingüística juzgándola rara o anómala y, por tanto, poco significativa desde nuestra perspectiva social y cultural propia, aunque la misma sea altamente significativa desde el punto de vista del emisor y de su marco social y cultural. Para poner de relieve este tipo de construcciones lingüísticas, abordaré aquellas referencias y expresiones con contenido sexual que se precisa comunicar del árabe al español en el ámbito de la interpretación en los Servicios Públicos, o en el ámbito social. Por ello, este trabajo se centrará exclusivamente en la interpretación, porque es ella, frente a la traducción, la que precisa de la presencia física y efectiva de los tres actores de la comunicación, a saber: el proveedor del servicio, el usuario del mismo y el intérprete

La cultura en la configuración del chiste sobre la mujer

The humorous discourse is imbued with extralinguistic references, social and cultural factors, in addition to the already well known procedures and metalinguistic self-reference(s), hence its translation and interpretation with the same humorous load becomes complex. This is due to different linguistic complexities involved in its Construction, and the cultural powers conferred. On the basis of this approach, this paper aims to examine the universal and the particular in the transfer of joke(s) about women from one culture to another. For this goal we have selected a pair of seemingly different cultures (the Arabic and the Spanish ones), though they metaphorically belong to the Mediterranean culture. As a result of our research, we will try to figure out how women are depicted in the jokes from those cultures following several parameters: physique, intellect and morality.El discurso lúdico está impregnado de referencias extralingüísticas de índole social y cultural, amén de los ya consabidos procedimientos metalingüísticos y de autorreferencia, de ahí que una traducción o interpretación del mismo que mantenga la misma carga humorística resulte complicada. Esto se debe no solamente a las distintas complejidades lingüísticas implicadas en su construcción, sino también a las atribuciones culturales que se le confieren. No estamos hablando, por tanto, de la traducibilidad lingüística, sino de la cultural. Es decir, ¿son aceptables del mismo modo los chistes sobre la mujer a ambas orillas del Mediterráneo? Partiendo de este planteamiento, el presente trabajo tiene por objeto analizar lo universal y lo particular en el trasvase del chiste sobre la mujer de una cultura a otra. Para ello, se han elegido un par de culturas aparentemente diferentes como son la árabe y la española, aunque metafóricamente se designe a ambas con el nombre de cultura mediterránea. Así, se intentará averiguar cómo se representa a la mujer en el chiste desde los siguientes parámetros: el físico, el intelectual y el moral

Globalización, cultura del Otro y traducción

In its early stages, the globalization process relied on economic criteria so as to guarantee the flux of manufactured goods from North to South, and of energetic resources and raw materials from South to North. From economic and financial transnationalism, globalization moves on towards the universalization of value systems. However, the latter process has been challenged relatively suceessfully by anti-globalization movements, migratory fluxes of workers from South to North, and identity conservadurism at the ethnic and cultural levels. Thus, transnational economic fluidity has not an equivalent in the exchange of cultural values, reflecting the state of crisis that affects the recognition of the Other and the elements configuring the systems of representation. In this context, translation would be understood as direct style, while representation (giving voice to the Other) would constitute indirect style. From such premises, this article explores the place of translation in relation to actual and objective knowledge of the Other, as well as to its representation as mediatised and selective knowledge.El proceso de globalización parece basarse inicialmente en Criterios económicos para garantizar una fluidez de productos del Norte al Sur, y de materias primas y energéticas del Sur al Norte. Una vez garantizado el transnacionalismo económico y financiero, la globalización empezaba a preocuparse por la universalización del sistema de valores. Sin embargo, esta globalización de valores se ha visto contrariada por movimientos adversos: la antiglobalización, el traslado de mano de obra del Sur al Norte y el conservadurismo identitario, tanto étnico como cultural. La fluidez económica transnacional no va compaginada, por tanto, con una fluidez en el intercambio de valores y en el movimiento de las personas necesitadas de trabajo. Esta crisis se ve reflejada sobre todo en lo que saben unos de otros, en lo que se traduce en ambas direcciones y en los elementos que configuran el sistema representativo. La traducción, aquí, se entiende como estilo directo, y la represtación —cuando se pone voz al Otro— como estilo indirecto. El objetivo de este artículo es, por ello, describir el lugar que ocupa tanto la traducción en tanto que conocimiento real y objetivo del Otro, como la representación de éste en tanto que conocimiento mediatizado y selectivo

La metaforización del Otro en la traducción de sus construcciones lingüísticas en los Medios

Traditional mass media are increasingly subjected to a rigorous analysis of their linguistic productions and to a continuous monitoring of the representations they make of the Other (Alarcón 2004). For this reason, we observe that, from a certain direct and ordinary disqualification in the early nineties (El-Madkouri Maataoui 2009), a series of communication strategies has been adopted with subtle linguistic constructions: what they say and what they want to say have different objectives and they constitute what has been called “microracisms”. In fact, the academic and social pressure during the last decades, along with a more informed intellectual conscience, in addition to the active presence of this Other among us, have also caused the reduction of macroracism, producing, instead, microdiscursive manifestations that elude regulation and social rejection. However, there is another discursive manifestation to which less attention has been paid: the metaphorization of the other and its conversion into a caricature of himself. In the present investigation we focus precisely on the analysis and description of the metaphorization and caricature of the Other through the reproduced discourse.Los medios de comunicación de masas tradicionales están cada vez más sometidos a un análisis riguroso de sus producciones lingüísticas y a un seguimiento continuo de las representaciones que hacen del Otro (Alarcón 2004). Por ello, observamos que, de cierta descalificación directa y ordinaria a principios de los años noventa (El-Madkouri Maataoui 2009), se ha pasado a una serie de estrategias comunicativas con construcciones lingüísticas sutiles cuyo decir y querer decir no apuntan el mismo objetivo y que constituyen lo que se ha convenido en llamar “microracismos”. De hecho, la presión académica y social de las últimas décadas, junto con una conciencia intelectual más informada, además de la presencia activa de este Otro entre Nosotros, han participado igualmente en reducir las manifestaciones del macroracismo, produciendo, en cambio, manifestaciones microdiscursivas que eluden la regulación y el rechazo social. Sin embargo, existe otra manifestación discursiva a la cual se ha prestado menos atención: la metaforización del otro y su conversión en una caricatura de sí mismo. The objective of this research is to analyze a communicative activity of enormous legal and judicial importance, namely, interpretation and translation in judicial processes. More specifically, the aim is to see the framework of performance of the police interpreter and analyze the interpretive processes of telephone interceptions.This activity, for which unskilled personnel are very often hired, requires a series of skills and aptitudes that transcend any other type of regular and regulated interpretation. The corpus consists of the introspection of the researcher himself as interpreter and former coordinator of a team of interpreters in Social Services, as well as results of an open survey to other interpreters of this modality.El objetivo de esta investigación es abordar una actividad comunicativa de enorme trascendencia jurídica y judicial, la interpretación y traducción en los procesos judiciales. Se trata específicamente de dar cuenta del marco de actuación del intérprete policial y analizar los procesos interpretativos de las interceptaciones telefónicas.Esta actividad, por la cual se contrata muy a menudo a personal no cualificado, necesita de una serie de destrezas y aptitudes que trascienden cualquier otro tipo de interpretación regular y reglada.
