Ecology and Evolution of Drosophila ambochila, A Rare Picture-Winged Species Endemic to the Wai'anae Range of O'ahu, Hawaiian Islands
The rare O'ahu picture-winged fly Drosophila ambochila Hardy
& Kaneshiro is endemic to two windward ravines in the Wai'anae Mountains
that harbor its host plant. Drosophila ambochila is an ecological specialist that
breeds on Pisonia stems and trunks in an intermediate stage of decay. By providing
field-collected females with suitable substrate material, we have been
able to observe the oviposition behavior of this species in the laboratory and
obtain F 1 larvae. In nature, females oviposit each batch of mature eggs ("'4050)
in a single cluster, by repeatedly inserting their long ovipositor into the
same crack or beetle hole in the decaying Pisonia bark. Ovipositor, ovary, and
egg morphology are characteristic of bark-breeding Hawaiian Drosophila, but
SEM studies revealed a distinctive chorionic ultrastructure for the eggs of this
species. Larval salivary chromosome analyses indicated that the O'ahu D. ambochila
is most closely related to D. alsophila from the island of Hawai'i and
have helped to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among six of the nine species
belonging to the vesciseta subgroup of the glabriapex species group
Auxiliary potential in no-core shell-model calculations
The Lee-Suzuki iteration method is used to include the folded diagrams in the
calculation of the two-body effective interaction between
two nucleons in a no-core model space. This effective interaction still depends
upon the choice of single-particle basis utilized in the shell-model
calculation. Using a harmonic-oscillator single-particle basis and the
Reid-soft-core {\it NN} potential, we find that overbinds
^4\mbox{He} in 0, 2, and model spaces. As the size of the
model space increases, the amount of overbinding decreases significantly. This
problem of overbinding in small model spaces is due to neglecting effective
three- and four-body forces. Contributions of effective many-body forces are
suppressed by using the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock single-particle Hamiltonian.Comment: 14 text pages and 4 figures (in postscript, available upon request).

Non-Abelian dynamics and heavy multiquarks, Steiner-tree confinement in hadron spectroscopy
A brief review is first presented of attempts to predict stable multiquark
states within current models of hadron spectroscopy. Then a model combining
flip-flop and connected Steiner trees is introduced and shown to lead to stable
multiquarks, in particular for some configurations involving several heavy

Parity-Violating Interaction Effects I: the Longitudinal Asymmetry in pp Elastic Scattering
The proton-proton parity-violating longitudinal asymmetry is calculated in
the lab-energy range 0--350 MeV, using a number of different, latest-generation
strong-interaction potentials--Argonne V18, Bonn-2000, and Nijmegen-I--in
combination with a weak-interaction potential consisting of rho- and
omega-meson exchanges--the model known as DDH. The complete scattering problem
in the presence of parity-conserving, including Coulomb, and parity-violating
potentials is solved in both configuration- and momentum-space. The predicted
parity-violating asymmetries are found to be only weakly dependent upon the
input strong-interaction potential adopted in the calculation. Values for the
rho- and omega-meson weak coupling constants and
are determined by reproducing the measured asymmetries at 13.6 MeV, 45 MeV, and

Splitting of Folded Strings in AdS_4*CP^3
We study classically splitting of two kinds of folded string solutions in
AdS_4*CP^3. Conserved charges of the produced fragments are computed for each

The (1600): A Strange Hybrid Baryon
We use the method of QCD sum rules to investigate a possible hybrid baryon
with the quantum numbers of the . Using a current composed of uds
quarks in a color octet and a gluon, a strange hybrid, the is found
about 500 MeV above the , and we identify it as the .
Using our sigma/glueball model we predict a large branching fraction for the
resonance), and the experimental search
for this decay mode could provide a test of the hybrid nature of the

A system of ODEs for a Perturbation of a Minimal Mass Soliton
We study soliton solutions to a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a
saturated nonlinearity. Such nonlinearities are known to possess minimal mass
soliton solutions. We consider a small perturbation of a minimal mass soliton,
and identify a system of ODEs similar to those from Comech and Pelinovsky
(2003), which model the behavior of the perturbation for short times. We then
provide numerical evidence that under this system of ODEs there are two
possible dynamical outcomes, which is in accord with the conclusions of
Pelinovsky, Afanasjev, and Kivshar (1996). For initial data which supports a
soliton structure, a generic initial perturbation oscillates around the stable
family of solitons. For initial data which is expected to disperse, the finite
dimensional dynamics follow the unstable portion of the soliton curve.Comment: Minor edit
Large-space shell-model calculations for light nuclei
An effective two-body interaction is constructed from a new Reid-like
potential for a large no-core space consisting of six major shells and is used
to generate the shell-model properties for light nuclei from =2 to 6. (For
practical reasons, the model space is partially truncated for =6.) Binding
energies and other physical observables are calculated and compare favorably

Search for single top quarks in the tau+jets channel using 4.8 fb of collision data
We present the first direct search for single top quark production using tau
leptons. The search is based on 4.8 fb of integrated luminosity
collected in collisions at =1.96 TeV with the D0 detector
at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with a final state
including an isolated tau lepton, missing transverse energy, two or three jets,
one or two of them tagged. We use a multivariate technique to discriminate
signal from background. The number of events observed in data in this final
state is consistent with the signal plus background expectation. We set in the
tau+jets channel an upper limit on the single top quark cross section of
\TauLimObs pb at the 95% C.L. This measurement allows a gain of 4% in expected
sensitivity for the observation of single top production when combining it with
electron+jets and muon+jets channels already published by the D0 collaboration
with 2.3 fb of data. We measure a combined cross section of
\SuperCombineXSall pb, which is the most precise measurement to date.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Narrative Exposure Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder associated with repeated interpersonal trauma in patients with Severe Mental Illness: a mixed methods design
Background: In the Netherlands, most patients with severe mental illness (SMI) receive flexible assertive community treatment (FACT) provided by multidisciplinary community mental health teams. SMI patients with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are sometimes offered evidence-based trauma-focused treatment like eye movement desensitization reprocessing or prolonged exposure. There is a large amount of evidence for the effectiveness of narrative exposure therapy (NET) within various vulnerable patient groups with repeated interpersonal trauma. Some FACT-teams provide NET for patients with comorbid PTSD, which is promising, but has not been specifically studied in SMI patients.
Objectives: The primary aim is to evaluate NET in SMI patients with comorbid PTSD associated with repeated interpersonal trauma to get insight into whether (1) PTSD and dissociative symptoms changes and (2) changes occur in the present SMI symptoms, care needs, quality of life, global functioning, and care consumption. The second aim is to gain insight into patients’ experiences with NET and to identify influencing factors on treatment results.
Methods: This study will have a mixed methods convergent design consisting of quantitative repeated measures and qualitative semi-structured in-depth interviews based on Grounded Theory. The study population will include adult SMI outpatients (n=25) with comorbid PTSD and receiving NET. The quantitative study parameters will be existence and severity of PTSD, dissociative, and SMI symptoms; care needs; quality of life; global functioning; and care consumption. In a longitudinal analysis, outcomes will be analyzed using mixed models to estimate the difference in means between baseline and repeated measurements. The qualitative study parameters will be experiences with NET and perceived factors for success or failure. Integration of quantitative and qualitative results will be focused on interpreting how qualitative results enhance the understanding of quantitative outcomes.
Discussion: The results of this study will provide more insight into influencing factors for clinical changes in this population
