Needed Research on the Englishes of Appalachia
Information about the 79th annual meeting of the Southeastern Conference on Linguistics (SECOL) organized by Jennifer Cramer at the University of Kentucky on April 2012 in Lexington, Kentucky. Topics discussed at the meeting includes current state of research studies on linguistic processes in Appalachia, traditional dialectological and ethnographic. The meeting also featured panel experts including Bridget L. Anderson, Michael Montgomery and Walt Wolfram
Origin of volatiles in the main belt
We propose a scenario for the formation of the main belt in which asteroids incorporated icy particles formed in the outer solar nebula. We calculate the composition of icy planetesimals formed beyond a heliocentric distance of 5 au in the nebula by assuming that the abundances of all elements, in particular that of oxygen, are solar. As a result, we show that ices formed in the outer solar nebula are composed of a mix of clathrate hydrates, hydrates formed above 50 K and pure condensates produced at lower temperatures. We then consider the inward migration of solids initially produced in the outer solar nebula and show that a significant fraction may have drifted to the current position of the main belt without encountering temperature and pressure conditions high enough to vaporize the ices they contain. We propose that, through the detection and identification of initially buried ices revealed by recent impacts on the surfaces of asteroids, it could be possible to infer the thermodynamic conditions that were present within the solar nebula during the accretion of these bodies, and during the inward migration of icy planetesimals. We also investigate the potential influence that the incorporation of ices in asteroids may have on their porosities and densities. In particular, we show how the presence of ices reduces the value of the bulk density of a given body, and consequently modifies its macroporosity from that which would be expected from a given taxonomic typ
Multiphase weakly nonlinear geometric optics for Schrodinger equations
We describe and rigorously justify the nonlinear interaction of highly
oscillatory waves in nonlinear Schrodinger equations, posed on Euclidean space
or on the torus. Our scaling corresponds to a weakly nonlinear regime where the
nonlinearity affects the leading order amplitude of the solution, but does not
alter the rapid oscillations. We consider initial states which are
superpositions of slowly modulated plane waves, and use the framework of Wiener
algebras. A detailed analysis of the corresponding nonlinear wave mixing
phenomena is given, including a geometric interpretation on the resonance
structure for cubic nonlinearities. As an application, we recover and extend
some instability results for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on the torus in
negative order Sobolev spaces.Comment: 29 page
Recursive double-size fixed precision arithmetic
International audienceThis work is a part of the SHIVA (Secured Hardware Immune Versatile Architecture) project whose purpose is to provide a programmable and reconfigurable hardware module with high level of security. We propose a recursive double-size fixed precision arithmetic called RecInt. Our work can be split in two parts. First we developped a C++ software library with performances comparable to GMP ones. Secondly our simple representation of the integers allows an implementation on FPGA. Our idea is to consider sizes that are a power of 2 and to apply doubling techniques to implement them efficiently: we design a recursive data structure where integers of size 2^k, for k>k0 can be stored as two integers of size 2^{k-1}. Obviously for k<=k0 we use machine arithmetic instead (k0 depending on the architecture)
Development and Initial Psychometric Evaluation of the Post-Acute Acuity Rating for Children
The Post-Acute Acuity Rating for Children (PAARC) is the first known acuity rating intended to reflect medical severity based on age, reason for admission, diagnoses, dependence in activities of daily living, and technology reliance for children admitted to post-acute care rehabilitation hospitals. Content validity was tested using an expert panel scoring the Content Validity Index (CVI). Concurrent validity was examined using clinician's opinion of acuity at admission, the Complexity Index, and All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Group (APR-DRG) codes. Predictive validity was examined with acute care readmission within 30 days. Interrater reliability was assessed using admission histories from closed cases. Content validity was established and concurrent validity was moderate to high with clinician opinion (rho = .76, < .001), the Complexity Index (rho = .76, < .001), and APR-DRGs (rho = .349, = .001). Predictive validity was moderate (rho = .504, = .005) and returns to acute care within 30 days. Interrater reliability was excellent (ICC = 0.97; 95% CI = 0.92-0.90, < .001). Experts agreed that the PAARC's content is relevant, simple, and representative of the population. The PAARC measured well against indicators of medical complexity for pediatric outpatient care and medical record coding and was reliable between raters. Electric-field-dependent variable-range hopping conductance in quasi-two-dimensional systems: Application to PrBa2Cu3O7-y-based superconductor–normal-metal–superconductor junctions

We considered that the localized states are randomly distributed both in energy and space coordinates. Localized carriers hop from one state to another in both coordinates. We also considered that at a particular temperature the localized carriers are distributed according to the Fermi distribution function both below and above the Fermi level. The expression of the conductivity for the constant density of states was calculated. After some approximations, the expression of the conductivity was shown to reduce to expressions found in the literature. We also compared our theory with experimental results of PrBa2Cu3O7-y based S/N/S junctions. Characterisation of candidate members of (136108) Haumea's family: II. Follow-up observations
From a dynamical analysis of the orbital elements of transneptunian objects
(TNOs), Ragozzine & Brown reported a list of candidate members of the first
collisional family found among this population, associated with (136108) Haumea
(a.k.a. 2003 EL61). We aim to distinguish the true members of the Haumea
collisional family from interlopers. We search for water ice on their surfaces,
which is a common characteristic of the known family members. The properties of
the confirmed family are used to constrain the formation mechanism of Haumea,
its satellites, and its family. Optical and near-infrared photometry is used to
identify water ice. We use in particular the CH4 filter of the Hawk-I
instrument at the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope as a short
H-band (Hs), the (J-Hs) colour being a sensitive measure of the water ice
absorption band at 1.6 {\mu}m. Continuing our previous study headed by
Snodgrass, we report colours for 8 candidate family members, including
near-infrared colours for 5. We confirm one object as a genuine member of the
collisional family (2003 UZ117), and reject 5 others. The lack of infrared data
for the two remaining objects prevent any conclusion from being drawn. The
total number of rejected members is therefore 17. The 11 confirmed members
represent only a third of the 36 candidates. The origin of Haumea's family is
likely to be related to an impact event. However, a scenario explaining all the

SST-GATE: A dual mirror telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the world's first open
observatory for very high energy gamma-rays. Around a hundred telescopes of
different sizes will be used to detect the Cherenkov light that results from
gamma-ray induced air showers in the atmosphere. Amongst them, a large number
of Small Size Telescopes (SST), with a diameter of about 4 m, will assure an
unprecedented coverage of the high energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum
(above ~1TeV to beyond 100 TeV) and will open up a new window on the
non-thermal sky. Several concepts for the SST design are currently being
investigated with the aim of combining a large field of view (~9 degrees) with
a good resolution of the shower images, as well as minimizing costs. These
include a Davies-Cotton configuration with a Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode
(GAPD) based camera, as pioneered by FACT, and a novel and as yet untested
design based on the Schwarzschild-Couder configuration, which uses a secondary
mirror to reduce the plate-scale and to allow for a wide field of view with a
light-weight camera, e.g. using GAPDs or multi-anode photomultipliers. One
objective of the GATE (Gamma-ray Telescope Elements) programme is to build one
of the first Schwarzschild-Couder prototypes and to evaluate its performance.
The construction of the SST-GATE prototype on the campus of the Paris
Observatory in Meudon is under way. We report on the current status of the
project and provide details of the opto-mechanical design of the prototype, the
development of its control software, and simulations of its expected

Characterisation of candidate members of (136108) Haumea's family
Ragozzine & Brown [2007] presented a list of candidate members of the first
collisional family to be found among the trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs), the
one associated with (136108) Haumea (2003 EL61). We aim to identify which of
the candidate members of the Haumea collisional family are true members, by
searching for water ice on their surfaces. We also attempt to test the theory
that the family members are made of almost pure water ice by using optical
light-curves to constrain their densities. We use optical and near-infrared
photometry to identify water ice, in particular using the (J - H_S) colour as a
sensitive measure of the absorption feature at 1.6 micron. We use the CH_4
filter of the new Hawk-I instrument at the VLT as a short H-band (H_S) for this
as it is more sensitive to the water ice feature than the usual H filter. We
report colours for 22 candidate family members, including NIR colours for 15.
We confirm that 2003 SQ317 and 2005 CB79 are family members, bringing the total
number of confirmed family members to 10. We reject 8 candidates as having no
water ice absorption based on our Hawk-I measurements, and 5 more based on
their optical colours. The combination of the large proportion of rejected
candidates and time lost to weather prevent us from putting strong constraints
on the density of the family members based on the light-curves obtained so far;
we can still say that none of the family members (except Haumea) require a

More precisely, social media are opening a path for benefiting more from an organization’s process orientation. However, social media strategies are still an under-investigated field, especially when it comes to the research of social media use for the management and improvement of business processes or the internal way of working in organizations. By classifying a variety of articles, this study explores the evolution of social media implementation within the BPM discipline.
