    Terrestrial dissolved organic matter distribution in the North Sea

    The flow of terrestrial carbon to rivers and inland waters is a major term in the global carbon cycle. The organic fraction of this flux may be buried, remineralized or ultimately stored in the deep ocean. The latter can only occur if terrestrial organic carbon can pass through the coastal and estuarine filter, a process of unknown efficiency. Here, data are presented on the spatial distribution of terrestrial fluorescent and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (FDOM and CDOM, respectively) throughout the North Sea, which receives organic matter from multiple distinct sources. We use FDOM and CDOM as proxies for terrestrial dissolved organic matter (tDOM) to test the hypothesis that tDOM is quantitatively transferred through the North Sea to the open North Atlantic Ocean. Excitation emission matrix fluorescence and parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) revealed a single terrestrial humic-like class of compounds whose distribution was restricted to the coastal margins and, via an inverse salinity relationship, to major riverine inputs. Two distinct sources of fluorescent humic-like material were observed associated with the combined outflows of the Rhine, Weser and Elbe rivers in the south-eastern North Sea and the Baltic Sea outflow to the eastern central North Sea. The flux of tDOM from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean appears insignificant, although tDOM export may occur through Norwegian coastal waters unsampled in our study. Our analysis suggests that the bulk of tDOM exported from the Northwest European and Scandinavian landmasses is buried or remineralized internally, with potential losses to the atmosphere. This interpretation implies that the residence time in estuarine and coastal systems exerts an important control over the fate of tDOM and needs to be considered when evaluating the role of terrestrial carbon losses in the global carbon cycle

    Novel Environmental Features for Robust Multisensor Navigation

    Many navigation techniques have now become so reliant on GNSS that there is no back up when there is limited or no signal reception. If there is interference, intentional or otherwise, with the signal, navigation could be lost or become misleading [1]. Other navigation techniques harness different technologies such as Wi-Fi [2], eLoran and inertial navigation. However, each of these techniques has its own limitations, such as coverage, degradation in urban areas or solution drift [3]. Therefore there is a need for new navigation and positioning techniques that may be integrated with GNSS to increase the reliability of the system as a whole. This paper presents the results of a feasibility study to identify a set of novel environmental features that could be used for navigation in the temporary absence of GNSS or degradation of the signal. By measuring these features during times of GNSS availability a map can be produced. This can be referred to during times of limited reception, a principle already used for some Wi-Fi positioning techniques [2]. Therefore a “measurable” can be defined as a feature either man-made or natural that is spatially distinct and has limited temporal variation. Possibilities considered include magnetic anomalies [4], light intensity and road signs. Firstly, a brainstorming exercise and a literature study were conducted to generate a list of possible environmental features that was assessed for the viability of each candidate. The features were ranked according to three criteria: practicality, precision and coverage. The definition of practicality for each measurable was that a suitable detector must be installable on a road vehicle, particularly an emergency vehicle, at a reasonable cost with minimal alterations to the vehicle. Precision was defined in terms of the spatial variation of the environmental feature and thus the accuracy with which position information might be derived from it. Coverage was assessed in terms of the availability of the feature over a range of different environments. Continuous coverage is not required because the new measurables may be used in combination and integrated with dead reckoning techniques, such as odometry and inertial navigation [3]. The outcome of the viability study was used to determine which features are to be experimentally tested. Magnetic anomalies, road texture and a dozen other environmental features were found to be worth investigation. Features which were discounted include wind speed and pulsars [5]. The initial experiment was carried out on foot in Central London. The same tests were repeated on two separate days, with a closed loop circuit walked three times on each occasion. This experiment used an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), comprising accelerometer and gyro triads, together with a barometer, three-axis magnetometer and GNSS receiver. The experiment was also recorded using a camcorder from the point of view of a pedestrian, enabling visual and audio features of the environment to be assessed. Magnetic anomalies were found to be a promising source of position information. Peaks in the magnetometer data were observed on all rounds at approximately the same positions. There were also similarities seen in the temperature profiles after correcting for the temporal variation of the background temperature. Another potential source of position information was found to be text-based signs. It is relatively simple to extract text from camera images and it is easily stored in a feature database. However, methods of dealing with identically-worded signs in close proximity will need to be developed. Sound levels were analysed in 10s intervals for the mean, minimum and maximum sound volume. There was no clear correlation observed between the different rounds of the experiment. Due to the pedestrian experimental results sound levels of the surroundings will not be used in further experimentation. An alternative area of enquiry for using sound (in the vehicular experiments) is using microphones to indirectly measure road texture based on the noise from the wheel contact with the road [6]. The paper will also present results of road vehicle experiments. Multiple circuits of the same routes will be compared. Different environments will be assessed including rural, dual carriageways, suburban and urban roads. Sensors to be used include the IMU and 3-axis magnetometer from the pedestrian experiment, a barometer, gas sensors, a microphone, an axle-mounted accelerometer, an ambient light sensor and a thermometer. These will be placed either on, inside or under the vehicle as determined by the individual needs of the sensors. The results will be used to determine which of these sensors could be potentially used for a multisensor integrated navigation system and also the environments in which they work optimally. Using the results of the three feasibility study phases (literature review, pedestrian and road experiment) the next project stage will be to produce a demonstration system that uses the most feasible features of the environment and creates a map database during times GNSS is present. This database will then be used for navigation in times of need.     Evolution of leaf-form in land plants linked to atmospheric CO2 decline in the Late Palaeozoic era

    The widespread appearance of megaphyll leaves, with their branched veins and planate form, did not occur until the close of the Devonian period at about 360 Myr ago. This happened about 40 Myr after simple leafless vascular plants first colonized the land in the Late Silurian/Early Devonian, but the reason for the slow emergence of this common feature of present-day plants is presently unresolved. Here we show, in a series of quantitative analyses using fossil leaf characters and biophysical principles, that the delay was causally linked with a 90% drop in atmospheric pCO2 during the Late Palaeozoic era. In contrast to simulations for a typical Early Devonian land plant, possessing few stomata on leafless stems, those for a planate leaf with the same stomatal characteristics indicate that it would have suffered lethal overheating, because of greater interception of solar energy and low transpiration. When planate leaves first appeared in the Late Devonian and subsequently diversified in the Carboniferous period, they possessed substantially higher stomatal densities. This observation is consistent with the effects of the pCO2 on stomatal development and suggests that the evolution of planate leaves could only have occurred after an increase in stomatal density, allowing higher transpiration rates that were sufficient to maintain cool and viable leaf temperatures

    Gender studies and interdisciplinarity

    In this article we consider the example of gender studies as an interdisciplinary field, and argue that gender studies, and women’s studies, from which gender studies developed, has a distinctive engagement with interdisciplinarity. By thinking about the tra- jectory of women’s studies, feminist thinking and gender studies, we suggest that this has always been an interdisciplinary field of study. We trace both the shifts and continuities in thinking between different iterations of feminist thinking to consider the three core fields of: gender, sex and sexuality; intersectionality and activism; theory and methods. The article aims to open up debate over what the constructive possibilities are of a focus upon gender, and what the relationship is between theory and activism.     Photochemical Spin Dynamics of the Vitamin B12 Derivative, Methylcobalamin

    Derivatives of vitamin B12 are six-coordinate cobalt corrinoids found in humans, other animals and micro-organisms. By acting as enzymatic cofactors and photoreceptor chromophores they serve vital metabolic and photoprotective functions. Depending on the context, the chemical mechanisms of the biologically-active derivatives of B12 – methylcobalamin (MeCbl) and 5’-deoxyadenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl) – can be very different from one another. The extent to which this chemistry is tuned by the upper axial ligand, however, is not yet clear. Here, we have used a combination of time-resolved FT-EPR, magnetic field effect experiments and spin dynamic simulations to reveal that the upper axial ligand alone only results in relatively minor changes to the photochemical spin dynamics of B12. By studying the photolysis of MeCbl, we find that, much like for AdoCbl, the initial (or ‘geminate’) radical pairs are born predominantly in the singlet spin-state and thus originate from singlet excited-state precursors. This is in contrast to the triplet radical pairs and precursors proposed previously. Unlike AdoCbl, the extent of geminate recombination is limited following MeCbl photolysis, resulting in significant distortions to the FT-EPR signal caused by polarization from spin-correlated methyl-methyl radical ‘f-pairs’ formed following rapid diffusion. Despite the photophysical mechanism that precedes photolysis of MeCbl showing a wavelength-dependence, the subsequent spin dynamics appear to be largely independent of excitation wavelength, again much like for AdoCbl. Our data finally provide clarity to what in the literature to date has been a confused and contradictory picture. We conclude that, although the upper axial position of MeCbl and AdoCbl does impact their reactivity to some extent, the remarkable biochemical diversity of these fascinating molecules is most likely a result of tuning by their protein environment

    The Search for Invariance: Repeated Positive Testing Serves the Goals of Causal Learning

    Positive testing is characteristic of exploratory behavior, yet it seems to be at odds with the aim of information seeking. After all, repeated demonstrations of one’s current hypothesis often produce the same evidence and fail to distinguish it from potential alternatives. Research on the development of scientific reasoning and adult rule learning have both documented and attempted to explain this behavior. The current chapter reviews this prior work and introduces a novel theoretical account—the Search for Invariance (SI) hypothesis—which suggests that producing multiple positive examples serves the goals of causal learning. This hypothesis draws on the interventionist framework of causal reasoning, which suggests that causal learners are concerned with the invariance of candidate hypotheses. In a probabilistic and interdependent causal world, our primary goal is to determine whether, and in what contexts, our causal hypotheses provide accurate foundations for inference and intervention—not to disconfirm their alternatives. By recognizing the central role of invariance in causal learning, the phenomenon of positive testing may be reinterpreted as a rational information-seeking strategy

    This paper investigates relationships between corporate governance traditions and quality of life as measured by a number of widely reported indicators. It provides an empirical analysis of indicators of societal health in developed economies using a classification based on legal traditions. Arguably the most widely cited work in the corporate governance literature has been the collection of papers by La Porta et al. which has shown, inter alia, statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for investor protection. We show statistically significant relationships between legal traditions and various proxies for societal health. Our comparative evidence suggests that the interests of investors may not be congruent with the interests of wider society, and that the criteria for judging the effectiveness of approaches to corporate governance should not be restricted to financial metrics

    Cirsium species show disparity in patterns of genetic variation at their range-edge, despite similar patterns of reproduction and isolation

    Genetic variation was assessed across the UK geographical range of Cirsium acaule and Cirsium heterophyllum. A decline in genetic diversity and increase in population divergence approaching the range edge of these species was predicted based on parallel declines in population density and seed production reported seperately. Patterns were compared with UK populations of the widespread Cirsium arvense.Populations were sampled along a latitudinal transect in the UK and genetic variation assessed using microsatellite markers. Cirsium acaule shows strong isolation by distance, a significant decline in diversity and an increase in divergence among range-edge populations. Geographical structure is also evident in C. arvense, whereas no such patterns are seen in C.heterophyllum. There is a major disparity between patterns of genetic variation in C. acaule and C. heterophyllum despite very similar patterns in seed production and population isolation in these species. This suggests it may be misleading to make assumptions about the geographical structure of genetic variation within species based solely on the present-day reproduction and distribution of populations

    Mathematics difficulties in extremely preterm children : evidence of a specific deficit in basic mathematics processing

    Background: Extremely preterm (EP, <26 wk gestation) children have been observed to have poor academic achievement in comparison to their term-born peers, especially in mathematics. This study investigated potential underlying causes of this difficulty. Methods: A total of 219 EP participants were compared with 153 term-born control children at 11 y of age. All children were assessed by a psychologist on a battery of standardized cognitive tests and a number estimation test assessing children’s numerical representations. Results: EP children underperformed in all tests in comparison with the term controls (the majority of Ps < 0.001). Different underlying relationships between performance on the number estimation test and mathematical achievement were found in EP as compared with control children. That is, even after controlling for cognitive ability, a relationship between number representations and mathematical performance persisted for EP children only (EP: r = 0.346, n = 186, P < 0.001; control: r = 0.095, n = 146, P = 0.256). Conclusion: Interventions for EP children may target improving children’s numerical representations in order to subsequently remediate their mathematical skills

    Drift as a Force of Evolution: A Manipulationist Account

    Can evolutionary theory be properly characterised as a “theory of forces”, like Newtonian mechanics? One common criticism to this claim concerns the possibility to conceive genetic drift as a causal process endowed by a specific magnitude and direction. In this article, we aim to offer an original response to this criticism by pointing out a connection between the notion of force and the notion of explanatory depth, as depicted in Hitchcock and Woodward’s manipulationist account of causal explanation. In a nutshell, our argument is that, since force-explanations can be consistently reframed as deep explanations and vice versa, and the notion of drift can be characterised in manipulationist terms as constitutively intervening in evolutionary deep explanations, then drift-explanations can be consistently reframed as force-explanations, and drift can be properly considered as a force of evolution. Insofar as similar considerations may be extended also to other evolutionary factors – chiefly selection –, our analysis offers an important support to the claim that evolutionary theory is a theory of forces.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
