Measurements and Monte-Carlo simulations of the particle self-shielding effect of B4C grains in neutron shielding concrete
A combined measurement and Monte-Carlo simulation study was carried out in
order to characterize the particle self-shielding effect of B4C grains in
neutron shielding concrete. Several batches of a specialized neutron shielding
concrete, with varying B4C grain sizes, were exposed to a 2 {\AA} neutron beam
at the R2D2 test beamline at the Institute for Energy Technology located in
Kjeller, Norway. The direct and scattered neutrons were detected with a neutron
detector placed behind the concrete blocks and the results were compared to
Geant4 simulations. The particle self-shielding effect was included in the
Geant4 simulations by calculating effective neutron cross-sections during the
Monte-Carlo simulation process. It is shown that this method well reproduces
the measured results. Our results show that shielding calculations for
low-energy neutrons using such materials would lead to an underestimate of the
shielding required for a certain design scenario if the particle self-shielding

The Morphological Content of Ten EDisCS Clusters at 0.5 < z < 0.8
We describe Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of 10 of the 20 ESO Distant
Cluster Survey (EDisCS) fields. Each ~40 square arcminute field was imaged in
the F814W filter with the Advanced Camera for Surveys Wide Field Camera. Based
on these data, we present visual morphological classifications for the ~920
sources per field that are brighter than I_auto=23 mag. We use these
classifications to quantify the morphological content of 10
intermediate-redshift (0.5 < z < 0.8) galaxy clusters within the HST survey
region. The EDisCS results, combined with previously published data from seven
higher redshift clusters, show no statistically significant evidence for
evolution in the mean fractions of elliptical, S0, and late-type (Sp+Irr)
galaxies in clusters over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 1.2. In contrast,
existing studies of lower redshift clusters have revealed a factor of ~2
increase in the typical S0 fraction between z=0.4 and z=0, accompanied by a
commensurate decrease in the Sp+Irr fraction and no evolution in the elliptical
fraction. The EDisCS clusters demonstrate that cluster morphological fractions
plateau beyond z ~ 0.4. They also exhibit a mild correlation between
morphological content and cluster velocity dispersion, highlighting the
importance of careful sample selection in evaluating evolution. We discuss
these findings in the context of a recently proposed scenario in which the
fractions of passive (E,S0) and star-forming (Sp,Irr) galaxies are determined

Theory of Circle Maps and the Problem of One-Dimensional Optical Resonator with a Periodically Moving Wall
We consider the electromagnetic field in a cavity with a periodically
oscillating perfectly reflecting boundary and show that the mathematical theory
of circle maps leads to several physical predictions. Notably, well-known
results in the theory of circle maps (which we review briefly) imply that there
are intervals of parameters where the waves in the cavity get concentrated in
wave packets whose energy grows exponentially. Even if these intervals are
dense for typical motions of the reflecting boundary, in the complement there

A Systematic Review of Online Sex Addiction and Clinical Treatments Using CONSORT Evaluation
Researchers have suggested that the advances of the Internet over the past two decades have gradually eliminated traditional offline methods of obtaining sexual material. Additionally, research on cybersex and/or online sex addictions has increased alongside the development of online technology. The present study extended the findings from Griffithsâ (2012) systematic empirical review of online sex addiction by additionally investigating empirical studies that implemented and/or documented clinical treatments for online sex addiction in adults. A total of nine studies were identified and then each underwent a CONSORT evaluation. The main findings of the present review provide some evidence to suggest that some treatments (both psychological and/or pharmacological) provide positive outcomes among those experiencing difficulties with online sex addiction. Similar to Griffithsâ original review, this study recommends that further research is warranted to establish the efficacy of empirically driven treatments for online sex addiction
Interleukin-2 therapy in patients with HIV infection
BACKGROUND
Used in combination with antiretroviral therapy, subcutaneous recombinant interleukin-2 raises CD4+ cell counts more than does antiretroviral therapy alone. The clinical implication of these increases is not known.
METHODS
We conducted two trials: the Subcutaneous Recombinant, Human Interleukin-2 in HIV-Infected Patients with Low CD4+ Counts under Active Antiretroviral Therapy (SILCAAT) study and the Evaluation of Subcutaneous Proleukin in a Randomized International Trial (ESPRIT). In each, patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who had CD4+ cell counts of either 50 to 299 per cubic millimeter (SILCAAT) or 300 or more per cubic millimeter (ESPRIT) were randomly assigned to receive interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy or antiretroviral therapy alone. The interleukin-2 regimen consisted of cycles of 5 consecutive days each, administered at 8-week intervals. The SILCAAT study involved six cycles and a dose of 4.5 million IU of interleukin-2 twice daily; ESPRIT involved three cycles and a dose of 7.5 million IU twice daily. Additional cycles were recommended to maintain the CD4+ cell count above predefined target levels. The primary end point of both studies was opportunistic disease or death from any cause.
RESULTS
In the SILCAAT study, 1695 patients (849 receiving interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy and 846 receiving antiretroviral therapy alone) who had a median CD4+ cell count of 202 cells per cubic millimeter were enrolled; in ESPRIT, 4111 patients (2071 receiving interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy and 2040 receiving antiretroviral therapy alone) who had a median CD4+ cell count of 457 cells per cubic millimeter were enrolled. Over a median follow-up period of 7 to 8 years, the CD4+ cell count was higher in the interleukin-2 group than in the group receiving antiretroviral therapy alone--by 53 and 159 cells per cubic millimeter, on average, in the SILCAAT study and ESPRIT, respectively. Hazard ratios for opportunistic disease or death from any cause with interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy (vs. antiretroviral therapy alone) were 0.91 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.70 to 1.18; P=0.47) in the SILCAAT study and 0.94 (95% CI, 0.75 to 1.16; P=0.55) in ESPRIT. The hazard ratios for death from any cause and for grade 4 clinical events were 1.06 (P=0.73) and 1.10 (P=0.35), respectively, in the SILCAAT study and 0.90 (P=0.42) and 1.23 (P=0.003), respectively, in ESPRIT.
CONCLUSIONS
Despite a substantial and sustained increase in the CD4+ cell count, as compared with antiretroviral therapy alone, interleukin-2 plus antiretroviral therapy yielded no clinical benefit in either study. (ClinicalTrials.gov numbers, NCT00004978 [ESPRIT] and NCT00013611 [SILCAAT study].

A substantial fraction of the price for a supermirror neutron guide system is the shielding, which is needed because of the gamma radiation produced as a result of neutron absorption in the supermirror layers. Traditional coatings have been made of nickel-titanium heterostructures, but Ni and Ti also have a fairly high absorption cross section for cold and thermal neutrons. We examine a number of alternatives to Ni as part of a study to reduce the gamma radiation from neutron guides. Materials such as diamond and Be have higher neutron scattering density than Ni, smaller absorption cross section, and when a neutron is absorbed they emit gamma photons with lower energies. We present reflectivity data comparing Ni with Be and preliminary results from diamond coatings showing there use as neutron guide coatings. Calculations show that Be and diamond coatings emit two orders of magnitude fewer gamma photons compared to Ni, mainly because of the lower absorption cross section
