Platelet-rich plasma is used as a treatment of arthropathies in horses. However, there is lack of in vitro information about the mechanism of action of this substance and its effects on healthy cartilage of these animals. The aims were: (1) to evaluate the effects at 48 and 96 h of two concentrations (25 and 50%) of leukocyte- and platelet-rich gel (L-PRG) and pure platelet rich gel (P-PRG) supernatants on the production/degradation in normal cartilage explants (CEs) of platelet-derived growth factor isoform BB, transforming growth factor beta-1, tumour necrosis factor alpha, interleukin (IL) 4 (IL-4), and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra); and (2) to study possible correlations of these molecules with their respective PRG supernatant treatments. CEs from six horses were cultured for 96 h with L-PRG and P-PRG supernatants at 25 and 50% concentrations, respectively. CE culture media were changed each 48 h and used for determination, by ELISA, of the molecules. L-PRG and P-PRG supernatants at 25 and 50% concentrations influenced the molecular anti-inflammatory profile of CE groups cultured with these substances. 50% L-PRG supernatant produced the most robust pro-inflammatory effects when compared to the CE control group and the CE group treated with the other PRG supernatant concentrations. In general, PRG supernatants induced pro-inflammatory effects in normal CEs

Indexación: Web of Science; ScieloBiorend SC (chitosan), BC-1000 EC (grapefruit extract plus bioflavonoids) and ECO-100 SC (bioflavonoids plus organic acids, citric phytoalexins, fatty acids, glycerides and sugars), respectively, suppressed grey rot of apple caused by B. cinerea by 80.1%, 79.0% and 76.5% when used as post-harvest treatments under controlled conditions. When applied as combined pre- and post-harvest treatments Biorend SC inhibited fruit rot by 49.9 %, while BC-1000 EC and ECO-100 SC were ineffective. None of the products inhibited fruit rot when applied as pre-harvest treatments under controlled conditions or as post-harvest treatments under commercial conditions. The algal polysaccharide ulvan used in post-harvest treatments suppressed grey rot by 56.0% under controlled conditions, but had no inhibitory effect on combined pre- and post-harvest treatments. The inability of products to activate defense mechanisms (chitinase and peroxidase) of fruits was consistent with the unsuccessful control of rot by pre-harvest treatment. The results suggest that the natural products used have potential for use in integrated management of Botrytis rot when applied after harvest.

    Special Issue on Spin Statistics

A workshop dedicated to spin statistics—"SpinStat2008"—was held at the end of October 2008 at the Stazione Marittima Conference Center in Trieste, Italy: it was meant to focus especially on experimental and theoretical aspects of the spin-statistics connection and of related symmetries (in particular the CPT and the Lorentz symmetries). The workshop was quite successful and everybody there felt that there should be a follow-up, and that the many interesting contributions and ideas presented there should be put in paper form. After some thinking we decided that the best format would be a series of refereed papers in a topical issue of an outstanding journal, open to all contributors, rather than the usual volume of conference papers restricted to participants. The Editors of Foundations of Physics kindly accepted to host this topical issue, and the ensuing call for papers drew a respectable flow of interesting and novel ideas, and some very appealing review papers. The comments that follow have bee

Increasing serum calcium levels and recent return from transplantation as clues to the tuberculous nature of refractory peritoneal dialysis peritonitis

Peritoneal tuberculosis is an uncommon complication of peritoneal dialysis in Europe. It is more common in Asian immigrants. A delayed diagnosis is frequent and impairs patient outcomes. We present two cases of peritoneal tuberculosis with common features that may help suspect the disease early countries with a low incidence. Both patients were females (of Spanish origin) who had recently restarted peritoneal dialysis following kidney transplantation. Both developed bacterial peritonitis clinically that was refractory to conventional antibiotics, despite clearance of bacteria. Both stopped calcium-containing phosphate binders because of increasing serum calcium that in one case led to frank hypercalcemia that persisted despite low calcium dialysate. Peritoneal biopsy was the first positive test in both cases. This report emphasizes the recent return from transplantation and rising serum calcium levels as features that should alert the physician of a potential underlying tuberculous peritonitisGrant support: ISCII and FEDER funds FIS PS09/00447, PI13/00047, ISCIII-RETIC REDinREN/RD12/0021/0001, Comunidad de Madrid/CIFRA/ S2010/BMD-2378.
