Rediscovering the Poet: Evelyn Lau

Evelyn Lau discusses the recurring themes of relationships, travel, and place in her poetry. Finding a way to voice the emotional and to critically engage with the confessional mode in poetry is important, and balancing an awareness of form with a concern to avoid rigidity allows the poetry, from one collection to the next, to become increasingly accomplished. For a number of Evelyn Lau's women characters the source of strength comes from seeing, from being observant. Though it is very difficult to lift writing out of two people in a room together, this drama seems one of the most natural vehicles for poetry

El peso de la herencia: la influencia de los modelos en la historiografía barroca

La influencia de los modelos clásicos fue enorme durante toda la Edad Moderna y su peso fue decisivo sobre la historiografía barroca, pero, como es lógico, se fue mitigando merced a su paulatina sustitución por otros modelos y a su progresiva inadecuación al tiempo. Los historiadores barrocos se nutrían de los clásicos desde las fases iniciales de su educación y eran lectores asiduos de las obras clásicas en la edad adulta, pero esa dependencia no oculta que el mensaje clásico era menos entendido e incorporado que los aspectos formales, y que obras y autores griegos y latinos habían llegado a la Edad Moderna a través del tamiz cristiano y medieval. Lo que en este artículo se pretende es por lo tanto, observar en qué medida los historiadores del Barroco seguían pendientes de las referencias clásicas, cómo las obtenían y entendían y si fueron capaces de ir desprendiéndose de su dominio.The influence of Classic models throughout the Early Modern period was extraordinary and the weight of that influence was decisive on Baroque historiography. However, in time, their influence diminished and they were ultimately replaced by other less anachronistic models. Baroque historians received the influence of the Classics from the initial stages of their education and, as adults, were assiduous readers of Classic works. In spite of that dependency, it is apparent that the Classic contents was less understood and assimilated than the formal aspects. It is also evident that Greek and Latin works and authors had arrived to the Early Modern period via the Christian and medieval world. The objectives of this article are to analyze to what extent Baroque historians were still depended on Classic references; where they obtained those references and how they understood them; and finally, whether they were able to free themselves of the Classic influence

Poetic Borderlands in the Work of Mina Loy

Este article analitza l'obra de Mina Loy, poeta britanicoamericana modernista, des d'una perspectiva feminista postmoderna respecte al tema de les identitats de gènere i l'hibridez cultural. El poema seqüenciat «Songs to Joannes» constituïx una paròdia de la lírica amorosa i la desestabilització del mite de l'amor romàntic a través d'un subjecte poètic que juga ambiguament amb la masculinitat i la feminitat. «Anglo-Mongrels and the Rose» és un poema autobiogràfic que reflectix el conflicte ètnic i cultural de l'autora, i que proposa l'autoinvenció de la identitat en un espai multifacétic i intersticial dins de la diferència. Esta seria la definició de «frontera», un concepte que vertebra l'anàlisi present per a mostrar la idiosincràsia de l'obra de Loy, una joia oblidada i recentment recuperada de la poesia modernista anglosaxona. El poema secuenciado «Songs to Joannes» constituye una parodia de la lírica amorosa y la desestabilización del mito del amor romántico a través de un sujeto poético que juega ambiguamente con la masculinidad y la feminidad. «Anglo-Mongrels and the Rose» es un poema autobiográfico que refleja el conflicto étnico y cultural de la autora, y que propone la autoinvención de la identidad en un espacio multifacético e intersticial dentro de la diferencia. Ésta sería la definición de «frontera», un concepto que vertebra el análisis presente para mostrar la idiosincrasia de la obra de Loy, una joya olvidada y recientemente recuperada de la poesía modernista anglosajona.This essay analyzes the work of Mina Loy, a British-American modernist poet, from a postmodern feminist perspective regarding the issues of gender identity and cultural hybridity. The sequential poem «Songs to Joannes» constitutes a parody of traditional love lyric and the troubling of the myth of romantic love through the representation of a poetic subject that plays indistinctively with the roles of masculinity and femininity. «Anglo-Mongrels and the Rose» is an autobiographical poem that reflects the author’s ethnic and cultural conflicts, suggesting the reinvention of identity in the multifaceted and interstitial space of difference. This is the definition of the concept of the «borderland », which guides the present study of Loy’s work in order to show the idiosyncratic quality of this long-forgotten but recently recovered modernist poet

Casas y cosas en la Galicia occidental en el siglo XVIII

This article develops in three levels: a) the problems of the documentation to study the rural and urban houses in the 18th century; b) the size and the characteristics of the rural houses of the western Galicia; c) the houses of the cities -Santiago de Compostela and Coruña-. A comparison is done between the housings of both areas; those of the nobility and the peasants; and those of the rich merchants who turned into an influential sector during the second half of the century. In addition, the routes by means of which goods were accumulated in the houses.Este artículo se desarrolla en tres niveles: los problemas de la documentación para estudiar las casas rurales y urbanas en el siglo XVIII; el tamaño y las características de las casas rurales de la Galicia occidental; las casas de las ciudades –Santiago de Compostela y A Coruña–. Se hace una comparación entre las viviendas de esos dos espacios; las de la hidalguía y los campesinos; y las de los ricos comerciantes que se convirtieron en un sector influyente en la segunda mitad del siglo.
