    Chemical pathways in ultracold reactions of SrF molecules

    We present a theoretical investigation of the chemical reaction SrF + SrF \rightarrow products, focusing on reactions at ultralow temperatures. We find that bond swapping, SrF + SrF \rightarrow Sr2_2 + F2_2, is energetically forbidden at these temperatures. Rather, the only energetically allowed reaction is SrF + SrF \rightarrow SrF2_2 + Sr, and even then only singlet states of the SrF2_2 trimer can form. A calculation along a reduced reaction path demonstrates that this abstraction reaction is barrierless, and proceeds by one SrF molecule "handing off" a fluorine atom to the other molecule.Comment: Two column format, 7 pages, 3 figures.     Mitochondrial Data in Monocot Phylologenetics

    Mitochondrial sequences are an important source of data in animal phylogenetics, equivalent in importance to plastid sequences in plants. However, in recent years plant systematists have begun exploring the mitochondrial genome as a source of phylogenetically useful characters. The plant mitochondrial genome is renowned for its variability in size, structure, and gene organization, but this need not be of concern for the application of sequence data in phylogenetics. However, the incorporation of reverse transcribed mitochondrial genes ( processed paralogs ) and the recurring transfer of genes from the mitochondrion to the nucleus are evolutionary events that must be taken into account. RNA editing of mitochondrial genes is sometimes considered a problem in phylogenetic reconstruction, but we regard it only as a mechanism that may increase variability at edited sites and change the codon position bias accordingly. Additionally, edited sites may prove a valuable tool in identifying processed paralogs. An overview of genes and sequences used in phylogenetic studies of angiosperms is presented. In the monocots, a large amount of mitochondrial sequence data is being collected together with sequence data from plastid and nuclear genes, thus offering an opportunity to compare data from different genomic compartments. The mitochondrial and plastid data are incongruent when organelle gene trees are reconstructed. Possible reasons for the observed incongruence involve sampling of paralogous sequences and highly divergent substitution rates, potentially leading to longbranch attraction.     Low Energy Nuclear Reaction Aircraft- 2013 ARMD Seedling Fund Phase I Project

    This report serves as the final written documentation for the Aeronautic Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) Seedling Fund's Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR) Aircraft Phase I project. The findings presented include propulsion system concepts, synergistic missions, and aircraft concepts. LENR is a form of nuclear energy that potentially has over 4,000 times the energy density of chemical energy sources. It is not expected to have any harmful emissions or radiation which makes it extremely appealing. There is a lot of interest in LENR, but there are no proven theories. This report does not explore the feasibility of LENR. Instead, it assumes that a working system is available. A design space exploration shows that LENR can enable long range and high speed missions. Six propulsion concepts, six missions, and four aircraft concepts are presented. This report also includes discussion of several issues and concerns that were uncovered during the study and potential research areas to infuse LENR aircraft into NASA's aeronautics research

    Phenoloxidase activity acts as a mosquito innate immune response against infection with semliki forest virus

    Several components of the mosquito immune system including the RNA interference (RNAi), JAK/STAT, Toll and IMD pathways have previously been implicated in controlling arbovirus infections. In contrast, the role of the phenoloxidase (PO) cascade in mosquito antiviral immunity is unknown. Here we show that conditioned medium from the Aedes albopictus-derived U4.4 cell line contains a functional PO cascade, which is activated by the bacterium Escherichia coli and the arbovirus Semliki Forest virus (SFV) (Togaviridae; Alphavirus). Production of recombinant SFV expressing the PO cascade inhibitor Egf1.0 blocked PO activity in U4.4 cell- conditioned medium, which resulted in enhanced spread of SFV. Infection of adult female Aedes aegypti by feeding mosquitoes a bloodmeal containing Egf1.0-expressing SFV increased virus replication and mosquito mortality. Collectively, these results suggest the PO cascade of mosquitoes plays an important role in immune defence against arboviruses

    The modern empirical legal studies movement has well-known antecedents in the law and society and law and economics traditions of the latter half of the 20th century. Less well known is the body of empirical research on legal phenomena from the period prior to World War II. This paper is an extensive bibliographic essay that surveys the English language empirical legal research from approximately 1940 and earlier. The essay is arranged around the themes in the research: criminal justice, civil justice (general studies of civil litigation, auto accident litigation and compensation, divorce, small claims, jurisdiction and procedure, civil juries), debt and bankruptcy, banking, appellate courts, legal needs, legal profession (including legal education), and judicial staffing and selection. Accompanying the essay is an extensive bibliography of research articles, books, and reports

Article funded by SCOAP3.Abstract: A search is presented for standard model (SM) production of four top quarks (Formula presented.) in pp collisions in the lepton + jets channel. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb−1 recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The expected cross section for SM (Formula presented.) production is (Formula presented.). A combination of kinematic reconstruction and multivariate techniques is used to distinguish between the small signal and large background. The data are consistent with expectations of the SM, and an upper limit of 32 fb is set at a 95% confidence level on the cross section for producing four top quarks in the SM, where a limit of 32 ± 17 fb is expected
