AIDA-DB: a data management architecture for the edge and cloud continuum

    Get PDF
There is an increasing demand for stateful edge computing for both complex Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and application services in emerging 5G networks. Managing a mutable persistent state in the edge does however bring new architectural, performance, and dependability challenges. Not only it has to be integrated with existing cloud-based systems, but also cope with both operational and analytical workloads and be compatible with a variety of SQL and NoSQL database management systems. We address these challenges with AIDA-DB, a polyglot data management architecture for the edge and cloud continuum. It leverages recent development in distributed transaction processing for a reliable mutable state in operational workloads, with a flexible synchronization mechanism for efficient data collection in cloud-based analytical workloads.Partially funded by project AIDA – Adaptive, Intelligent and Distributed Assurance Platform (POCI-01-0247- FEDER-045907) co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Operational Program for Competitiveness and Internationalisation (COMPETE 2020) and by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under CMU Portugal

The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic, phenotypic, and environmental parameters of 113 barley accessions (Hordeum vulgare), previously selected based on high yield, in an irrigated production system in the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna), for use in breeding programs in Brazil. The experiment was conducted in 2013 at two sites in the Federal District, using a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The evaluated traits were: grain yield, kernel plumpness, thousand grain weight, plant height, lodging, and days to heading. Significant differences were observed between environment and accessions for all studied traits, as well as genotype x environment interaction. The MCU 3832 PI 402310, MCU 3484 PI 401962, CI 08053 Custer, MCU 3634 PI 402112, and MCU 3816 PI 402294 accessions stood out regarding grain yield and kernel plumpness. It is possible to obtain high selection gains with high heritability values. However, indirect selection is not recommended in the experimental conditions due to the low genotypic and phenotypic correlations obtained. It is also possible to select barley accessions with high yield and early heading date simultaneously, an important factor in the genotype selection process for future experiments. The accessions from Colombia are the most adapted to the Cerrado conditions

Genetic parameters and agronomic characterization of elite barley accessions under irrigation in the cerrado

There is a demand for barley cultivars that are suitable for the malt industry as well as genotypes that are stable and better adapted for irrigation in the Cerrado. This study aimed to estimate the genetic parameters by assessing 69 barley genotypes from different countries, from 2012 to 2014, under irrigation in the Cerrado. Six agronomic characteristics were assessed: grain yield, plumpness kernel, thousand seeds weight, plant height, degree of plant lodging and days to heading. Analysis of variance, cluster test and phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlations were performed. Significant effects were observed for genotypes, years and the G x E interaction. High values of broad-sense heritability (> 86%) were found for all the characteristics, which enabled direct selection. The Colombian accession MCU363PI402112 stood out for its agronomic characteristics. Genotype selection based on the phenotypic evaluations was possible due to their good experimental accuracy and precision. Precocious genotypes with high grain yields and homogeneous grain sizes were selected. Due to the environmental influence on the grain yield, additional studies concerning the components of yield in this environment are necessary to facilitate the selection of more productive genotypes

Cross-layer QoS-Aware Resource Allocation for IoT-Enabled Service Choreographies

    Get PDF
International audienceResource allocation for distributed systems is a well-known approach to deal with quality of service requirements. However, existing approaches do not consider the effects of resource allocation at the different levels of a system, especially when considering the end-to-end behavior of distributed compositions such as service choreographies. Based on our previous research on the optimized and QoS-aware resource allocation for service choreographies and publish-subscribe brokers, we outline a novel approach that integrates the treatment of resource allocation at both levels in orderto yield a more precise control over end-to-end QoS. The paper presents an early architecture and discusses some of the main challenges towards realizing the approach

Increased Rho-kinase-mediated prostate contractions associated with impairment of β-adrenergic-cAMP-signaling pathway by chronic nitric oxide deficiency

AbstractImpairment of nitric oxide (NO) – cyclic GMP signaling pathway is likely to contribute to human begnin prostate hyperplasia (BPH). In the present study we have used a model of chronic NO synthesis inhibition to evaluate the functional alterations of prostate smooth muscle (PSM) machinery, and involvement of Rho-kinase pathway. Wistar rats were treated with the NO inhibitor Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 20mg/kg/day; 4 weeks), after which contractile responses to phenylephrine (α1-adrenoceptor agonist; 1nM to 100µM), carbachol (muscarinic agonist; 1nM to 1mM) and α,β-methylene ATP (P2X receptor agonist; 1–10µM), as well as to electrical-field stimulation (EFS; 1–32Hz) were evaluated. PSM relaxations to isoproterenol (non-selective β-adrenoceptor agonist, 0.1nM to 10µM) and sodium nitroprusside (NO donor, 1nM to 10mM) were also evaluated. The ratio prostate weight/body weight was 22% greater (P<0.05) in L-NAME compared with control group. The PSM contractions to phenylephrine, carbachol and α,β-methylene ATP were higher in L-NAME (Emax: 3.85±0.25, 3.52±0.35 and 2.03±0.2mN, respectively) compared with control group (Emax: 3.08±0.17, 2.37±0.18 and 1.57±0.18mN, respectively). The PSM contractions induced by EFS were also significantly greater in L-NAME group. Prior incubation with the Rho-kinase inhibitor Y27632 (1µM) fully reversed the enhanced contractions to phenylephrine and carbachol. Isoproterenol-induced PSM relaxations were 34% lower in L-NAME group, which was associated with reduced levels of cAMP in prostate tissue. The relaxations to sodium nitroprusside remained unaltered in L-NAME group. In summary, chronic NO deficiency leads to increased Rho-kinase-mediated PSM contractile responses accompanied by impairment of β-adrenergic-cAMP-signaling pathway

METHODS Cross-sectional, national, school-based study with adolescents from 12 to 17 years old, participants in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA). The study stratified the sample by region and grouped according to schools and classes with representativeness to the set of cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants of the Country, macro-regions, capitals, and Federal District. A questionnaire collected data through a self-filled in method. We calculated the prevalences and their confidence intervals of 95% (95%CI) according to sex, age group, type of school and skin color. RESULTS Between 2013 and 2014, 74,589 adolescents were evaluated, 55.3% of the female sex. The total prevalence of active asthma was of 13.1% (95%CI 12.1-13.9), being higher in girls (14.8%; 95%CI 13.7-16.0) when compared to boys (11.2%; 95%CI 10.3-12.2) in all geographical strata examined. It was also higher between students of private schools (15.9%; 95%CI 14.2-17.7) when compared to public ones (12.4%; 95%CI 11.4-13.4). It was higher in the Southeast region (14.5%; 95%CI 12.9-16.1), and in the city of Sao Paulo (16.7%; 95%CI 14.7-18.7). The lowest prevalence was observed in North region (9.7%; 95%CI 9.7-10.5), and in Teresina (6.3%; 95%CI 4.9-7.7). The prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma was of 8.7% (95%CI 8.2-9.1); higher in the North region (13.5%; 95%CI 12.7-14.2), and in Porto Alegre (19.8%; 95%CI 17.5-22.3). It was lower in the Midwest (6.9%; 95%CI 6.0-7.8), and in Cuiaba (4.8%; 95%CI 3.8-5.9). We found no significant difference in the expression of this rate between the sexes, as well as in other variables evaluated by the study. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of asthma in Brazilian adolescents is high. Rates of active asthma and physician-diagnosed asthma vary widely in different regions and capitals evaluated by the ERICA. These results may assist in the preparation of preventive programs and policies on health and a better understanding of the factors associated with asthma in this age group
