John Eyre, the Morant Bay Rebellion in 1865, and the Racialisation of Western Political Thinking

    Get PDF
The process of the racialisation of the Western political thinking and its expansion into the Western political thinking is analyzed in the context in the British colonial experience and the phenomenon of Morant Bay Rebellion in Jamaica in 1865. Jamaica – whose economy been based traditionally on sugar plantation – suffered by the decline of world prizes, abolition of slavery, and end of trade monopoly in the first decades of the nineteenth century. The British colony witnessed widespread poverty and deterioration of racial relationships. The methods used by Governor Edward John Eyre to suppress the revolt of local black populations in October 1865 compromised the image of Great Britain as “moral empire”, split the British public opinion and demonstrated visibly the crisis of the Western liberalism challenged by the political and social problems in the overseas

Construction equipment management in large contracting company

    Get PDF
Tyto vybrané části řízení mechanizace jsou porovnány s firemní praxí střediska mechanizace v rámci stavebního podniku Hochtief CZ a.s.The goal of this bachelor thesis is to introduce basic selected rules and parts of construction equipment management and transportation in large contracting companies. Areas of equipment management are generally very different. Inclusion of equipment department within a company affects the directions and methods of equipment management to a large extent. Thesis focuses on machine categorization, acquisition methods, time value of money and ways of equipment depreciation. Thesis further describes the main role of net income, which is closely related with ownership and operation costs. Determination methods of these costs are also included in the thesis. These selected parts of equipment management are compared with standard industry practice of equipment department within the construction company Hochtief CZ a.s

Digestive structures in the Middle Ordovician trilobite Prionocheilus Rouault 1847, from the Barrandian area of Czech Republic

    Get PDF
Remains of a digestive system from a slightly damaged articulated specimen of the comparatively rare bathycheilid trilobite Prionocheilus vokovicensis (Šnajdr, 1956) are described for the first time. The specimen comes from the Middle Ordovician Šárka Formation of the Prague Basin and contains the midgut region of the digestive system preserved through the axial region of glabella and six anterior thoracic segments. The anterior-most part of the digestive system is unknown as the anterior glabellar lobes are not preserved in the studied specimen. In the cephalic shield, the remains of two pairs of gut diverticulae are seen in the posterior region of the glabella. Remains of five pairs of small cavities developed in the axis of the first six thoracic segments represent the remains of thoracic gut diverticulae. The discussed specimen possess the first undoubted remain of digestive structures established within the family Bathycheilidae (PŘibyl, 1953)

Trilobite assemblage of Calceola-bearing beds in Acanthopyge Limestone (Choteč formation, middle Devonian, Eifelian, Prague Basin, the Czech republic)

The trilobite assemblage of Calceola-bearing beds in the upper part of Acanthopyge Limestone (Choteč Formation, Eifelian) in the Koněprusy area, the Czech Republic, is described. Together with occurrence of Calceola, it indicates absence of significant palaeogeographic barriers restricting the distribution of the Rhenish-Type faunas in the Middle Devonian. The generic composition of the gathered trilobite assemblage somewhat differs from typical Acanthopyge-Phaetonellus assemblage characteristic for the Acanthopyge Limestone facies in possible absence and/or very rare occurrence of Phaetonellus, and only infrequent occurrence of Acanthopyge. Phacopid Chotecops cf. hoseri (Hawle et Corda, 1847) distinctly dominates; all other taxa are rather rare. Important is an occurrence of scutelluids of the Scutellum sensu lato group (preservation of remains does not enable more precise determination) and Longiproetus(?). Trilobite remnants are generally poorly preserved and very fragmented (only minute shields are not affected), which support a high-dynamic, shallow-water original environment

Moulting in Ordovician dalmanitoid and acastoid trilobites of the Prague Basin. Preliminary observation

    Get PDF
A review of the supposed moulting positions of the Bohemian Ordovician dalmanitoid and acastoid trilobites is presented. Five main moulting positions are described, but some combinations of these are also widespread. The variability of the supposed moulting mechanisms is surprisingly high, especially in Middle Ordovician taxa. All and/or almost all moulting positions may occur together even within a single species. In advanced representatives, only a few of the described mechanisms prevail. Nevertheless, the occurrence of the moulting positions in the Bohemian Ordovician dalmanitoid and acastoid trilobites is considered to be constrained by the overall body morphology, rather than the result of phylogenetical relations. Functionality of the facial suture in these groups during the ontogeny and phylogeny is discussed

Are urban agglomerations a better breeding place for product innovation?

    Get PDF
Compared to firms in rural regions, firms in urban agglomerations of the Netherlands dedicate a higher share of their R and D to product development. In our Hurdle Count Data estimate of determinants of new product announcements we find that, with a given product-R and D-intensity, firms in central regions have higher probabilities of announcing at least one new product in a journal and they also announce new products in larger numbers. Such support for theurban hierarchy/filter down hypothesis was not found when confining our analysis to standard R and D data

René Girard and the Theory of Mimetic Rivalry

    Get PDF
René Girard proposed a theory of mimetic rivalry to explain the origin and internal consistency of human culture by the ritual breaking of a vicious circle of reciprocal violence through sacrifice of a scapegoat. Girard supposed that human relations are essentially based on imitations and competitions. Social coexistence was maintained, reconciliation was achieved and violence was replaced by a circle of ritual killings as a foundation of religious and cultural order. Girard’s approach was influenced by Sigmund Freud and his work Totem and taboo and Émile Durkheim and his social explanation of religious life. The relationship of Girard’s view to the theory of Merlin Donald on the three stages in the evolution of culture and cognition could be discussed. Girard is convinced that Christianity presented a historical attempt to demonstrate an innocence of victims of traditional scapegoating
