    Drumlins in North Dakota

    Get PDF
The term \u27\u27drumlin is of Gaelic origin being derived from druim, a word for a mound or rounded hill, and has been used in glaciological literature since 1866. But with the increased study of subglacial ·shear features the terminology has become very inconsistent. The glacially formed longitudinal ridges found in northeastern North Dakota can be referred to as either drumlins or drumlinized ground moraine depending on their size, shape, composition, and interpreted origin. Most of the drumlins observed in North Dakota are cored with glacial outwash deposits but exceptions do exist. Drumlins cored with Pierre shale occur north of Langdon, North Dakota, and till-cored drumlin ridges are present .south of Devils Lake, North Dakota. Longitudinal ridges that are generally less than 5 feet in height and .made up entirely of till are present in many locations in northeastern North Dakota. Based on limited field observations, a study of drumlin literature, and an application of several principles of soil mechanics, a model for the formation of drumlins cored with sand and gravel has been developed. Internal pore-water pressure, effective stress (intergranular stress on the sediment), load pressure of the overlying ice, and permeability of the sediment are taken into consideration. Shear strength of the sediment is a function of effective stress. High pore-water pressure reduces the strength of the material. If outwash from a previous ice advance contained channelized sand and gravel deposits (great permeability--rapid discharge capacity) surrounded by sediment with a large amount of silt and clay (slight permeability--slow discharge capacity) shear strength would be an important factor in erosion occurring during a second advance. A sand and gravel body with a greater effective stress would survive a shear stress that would erode the surrounding material. The sand-and-gravel-cored drumlin ridges could be the remnants of an advance where shearing forces eroded the surrounding sediment

Erosion potential of the main branch of the Piedras Marcadas Watershed, Petroglyph National Monument, New Mexico

    Get PDF
The Piedras Marcadas Watershed covers approximately 6 square miles west of the Rio Grande in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This watershed is semi-arid and has arroyos, ephemeral streams that empty into a retaining dam. During the fall of 1998, eleven erosion pins and bridges were placed to record the sediment eroded or aggraded. The erosion pins recorded erosion in a range of 0.05 to 4 mm erosion and aggradation of 2 to 10 mm. The erosion bridges recorded erosion in a range of 3 to 9 mm and 1.5 to 10.7 mm ranges of aggradation. Two modified universal soil loss equations were applied and contrasted to predict sediment loss for this watershed. The first equation values ranged from 0.5 to 17.5 and the second equation values ranged from 0.01 to 1.35 tons per acre per year. Sedimentation is a watershed management concern. Water and wind processes acting upon this area exhibit accelerated erosion. The study site has a basalt escarpment rising 70 to 90 in as many feet. Four associated arroyos drain the watershed. Additionally, this area has 46 investigated gullies, four arroyo profiles, and one measured stratigraphic column. The suggested erosion management plan is to monitor sediment loss in the main arroyo branch, eradicate non-native species, and plant black willows

Lecture à l\u27écran : défis du lecteur branché

    Get PDF

Extending the Study of the 6,8 Rearrangement in Flavylium Compounds to Higher pH Values: Interconversion between 6-Bromo and 8-Bromo-apigeninidin

The system constitutes a pH-dependent network of chemical reactions involving up to 18 different species. The dynamic network is equivalent to a single diprotic acid exhibiting two pK(a)s, 2.55 and 5.4. Similar to other flavylium derivatives, the mole fraction of the species hemiketal and cis-chalcone in both multistate isomers are negligible at the equilibrium. At pH 1, the pure isomers are slowly converted in a mixture containing about 50% of isomers 6 and 8, while at pH 4, the system evolves to mixture of 10% trans-chalcone and 90% of quinoidal bases. A series of pH jumps from pure isomer 6 at pH 1 to pH 6 and back to pH 1 leads to the same initial absorption spectra of the pure isomer 6. The same occurs for pure isomer 8, showing the lack of communication between the cis-chalcones, at least in the time scale of few minutes. A pH jump from the equilibrated mixture of the isomers at pH 1.0 to 5.8 permits to follow a very slow isomerization.publishersversionpublishe

    HIV/AIDS and Croatian Migrant Workers

Due to their geographical mobility and long periods of separation from intimate partners, migrant workers are at increased risk for a variety of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS. This study sought to investigate patterns in HIV/AIDS related knowledge, attitudes and sexual behaviour in migrant workers in Croatia. In 2003, 566 male migrant workers were recruited during regular required medical examinations and surveyed at seven locations throughout the country. Each participant was asked to complete a self-administered KABP (sexual knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices) questionnaire. The average age of respondents was 38.2 years and the majority worked as seafarers (77.3%) and construction workers (20.5%). Only 18.5% of respondents were able to correctly answer all 13 questions assessing knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Seafarers reported higher levels of knowledge than did construction workers. The average respondent reported having had two sexual partners in the last 12 months, with slightly over half of the respondents (55.3%) reporting condom use at their last intercourse with a casual partner. One fifth of the respondents (20.3%) who reported having had intercourse with a sex worker during the last year reported not using condoms at last intercourse. The number of sexual partners was correlated with age, marital status, faith in God, and personal HIV risk assessment. Attitudes toward condom use, co-workers’ HIV/AIDS concerns and the duration of migrant status (within the last two years) were shown to be significant correlates of condom use at last intercourse with a casual partner. The effect of HIV/AIDS related knowledge on analyzed behaviors did not reach statistical significance. Inadequate patterns of migrant workers’ condom use, gaps in knowledge about HIV transmission and modes of protection, as well as widespread ignorance regarding available anonymous HIV testing found by this study suggest a critical need for expert intervention to avert the potential for an increase in new HIV/AIDS cases. A coordinated, systematic campaign for HIV/AIDS prevention among Croatian migrant workers should focus on increasing peer communication about HIV/AIDS, especially among younger migrant workers, and on reducing the frequency of sexual risk taking
