J’ ai vite réalisé que ce qui me fascinait dans le tableau de la résurrection (1512-16) de Matthias Grünewald n’était pas la figure du Christ – ce corps flottant, éthéré, diaphane, baignant dans une lumière divine n’a en soi plus grand-chose à dire à un artiste de notre époque  –, mais le gardien du tombeau en pleine chute à l’arrière-plan du tableau, ce personnage insolite aux allures de pantin dont le mouvement, coupé net dans son élan, semble préfigurer les effets pétrifiants et mortifères de la photographie. J’ai vite réalisé que cette figure, qui dut paraître assez insolite aux observateurs contemporains du tableau, personnifiait précisément l’individu moderne ; cette entité clôturée sur elle-même et qui soi-disant s’autogouverne, virtuellement affranchie de toute autorité transcendante, désormais libre de se bricoler un monde et d’en devenir le nombril ; ce dérisoire personnage ficelé à la fois dans cette écorce dure qu’est devenu son égo et dans son amas de viande intime, confiné à sa petite cellule perspectiviste, indéfiniment suspendu entre un passé lourd de surdéterminations et un futur chargé de peurs tout autant que de promesses. L’étonnant tableau de Grünewald, positionné au sein d’un espace ambigu entre les ères pré-moderne et moderne, m’a fourni les coordonnées pour articuler ce qui me semblait pouvoir constituer une vision inusitée et provocatrice du statut du corps et de la condition existentielle actuelle. Tout ce que j’avais à faire était d’expulser le Christ, tel un organe devenu obsolète dans le système symbolique de notre époque, et de concentrer pleinement mon regard sur cette figure qui tombe sans cesse, avec la même détermination mécanique qu’une goutte d’eau du robinet, puis sur les objets désertés qui l’accompagnent, la densité atmosphérique et le bruissement du silence qui l’environnent. […]Dans Les enfants de la symétrie brisée (les héritiers du vide et de l’accident, autrement dit), qui à mon sens fait suite à La résurrection et en est comme l’extension logique, j’ai voulu dire, je crois, la condition de l’être jeté, avec tout le poids d’un corps contraint, dans un monde radicalement insolite auquel il ne peut faire face par le recours à une quelconque transcendance, et qui devient, dès lors, créature condamnée à un effort métaphysiquement voué à l’échec. J’avais en tête de mettre en scène un univers dont le sol s’est dérobé ; un monde dépourvu de centre ou de base, comme dans La route de Cormac McCarthy ou dans Comment expressed through the way in which the models had to adapt themselves to an odd and constraining structure: an old, decomposing seat, full of holes and broken angles, covered in warped and skeletal branches, held together by haphazardly sewn patches whose mismatched shapes and textures sketch out a kind of motley and disconcerting cubist cockpit. These images portray difficult births in an environment that is resolutely blind and indifferent to human endeavours. In such a universe, Man appears as a handicapped being who must nevertheless move forward, the stubborn entrepreneur of his own existence, conceived as an acrobatic performance above an abyss. We live in a world whose stock of symbolic and mythological resources, with which we nourished ourselves not long ago, is almost exhausted. I thus imagined beings thrown into a world whose landmarks have disappeared, whose old protective symbolic envelopes have been torn, where each gesture is a groping for purchase, and where every step totters like a baby’s first or an aged man’s last. Indeed, my models actually experienced this acrobatic conquest of the aberrant in the course of the photo shoots. They had to strain and contort themselves to integrate into this recalcitrant structure, according to the shape and plasticity of their bodies, their degree of elasticity and flexibility, and following their desire either to venture further along in this process or to stop. In this respect, there is indeed a performative aspect to my images, as I have often been told. In fact, the same thing happened with The Resurrection: confronted with the arduous task of having to repeat the exaggeratedly twisted pose of Grünewald’s falling soldier, the models all found themselves confronted with the material density of their bodies, their limitations and their demands. I like to think that such situations of strangeness, depossession, and annihilation—always very concrete and physical—nevertheless call on a deeper mystery that transcends my characters and, in a way, sanctifies them. Ces notions s’expriment par la manière dont les modèles ont dû s’adapter à une structure radicalement étrange et contraignante  : un vieux siège en voie de décomposition, plein de trous et d’angles cassés, couvert de branches rachitiques et gauchies, formé de coutures hétéroclites, de pièces aux formes et aux textures mal appariées qui dessinent une sorte d’habitacle cubiste bariolé et déconcertant. Ces images mettent en scène des naissances difficiles dans un environnement résolument aveugle et indifférent aux entreprises humaines. Dans un tel univers, l’Homme apparaît comme cet être handicapé qui doit néanmoins avancer, cet entrepreneur acharné de sa propre existence conçue comme acrobatie au-dessus du vide. Nous vivons dans un monde dont les provisions symboliques et mythologiques, d’où hier encore nous tirions ressource, se sont presque épuisées. Je me suis donc imaginé des êtres jetés dans un monde dont les repères ont disparu, dont les enveloppes symboliques et protectrices anciennes ont été déchirées, où tout geste n’est plus que tâtonnement, où tout pas chancèle comme les premiers d’un enfant ou les derniers d’un égrotant. Cette conquête acrobatique de l’aberrant, mes modèles ont d’ailleurs pu l’expérimenter réellement durant les séances de prises de vue, alors qu’ils ont dû se livrer à des efforts incongrus pour s’intégrer à cette structure récalcitrante, suivant la forme et la plasticité de leur corps, son degré d’élasticité et de flexibilité, et selon leur volonté de s’aventurer ou non plus avant dans ce processus. En quoi mes images comportent bel et bien un aspect performatif, comme on me l’a souvent dit. En fait, la même chose est arrivée avec La résurrection : confrontés à la tâche ardue de devoir répéter la pose exagérément tordue du soldat tombant de Grünewald, les modèles se sont tous trouvés aux prises avec la densité matérielle de leur corps, avec ses limitations et ses demandes. J’aime bien penser que de telles situations d’étrangéisation, de dépossession et d’anéantissement – toujours très concrètes et physiques – en appellent néanmoins à un mystère plus profond, qui transcende mes personnages et en fait des êtres pour ainsi dire sanctifiés. I quickly realized that what fascinated me in Matthias Grünewald’s painting of the resurrection (1512-16) was not the Christ figure—in itself, that floating, ethereal, diaphanous body, bathed in divine light, has little left to say to an artist of our time—but the falling tomb guard in the background. This curious, puppet-like figure, neatly stopped in mid-movement, seems to prefigure the petrifying and deadly effects of photography. I quickly realized that this figure, which must have seemed quite surprising to contemporary observers of the painting, precisely personified the modern individual—that self-enclosed and supposedly self-governing entity, virtually emancipated from all transcendental authority, now free to pull together a world and to become its navel—this trifling character, bound up both in the hardened armour that its ego has become and in its heap of intimate meat, confined to its little perspectivist cell, indefinitely suspended between a past heavy with overdeterminations and a future just as charged with fears as with promises. Grünewald’s surprising painting, positioned in an ambiguous space between the pre-modern and modern eras, provided me with the coordinates to articulate what I believed could constitute an unusual and provocative vision of the status of the body and today’s existential condition. All I had to do was to expel the Christ figure, like an organ that had become obsolete in the symbolic system of our time, and fully concentrate my gaze on this figure that is endlessly falling with the same mechanical determination as a drop of water from the tap, and then on the deserted objects that accompany it, the atmospheric density and the rustle of the silence that surround it. […]In Children of Broken Symmetry (the heirs to emptiness and accident, in other words)—which I understand as a sequel to The Resurrection and as a kind of logical extension of it—I wanted to speak of the condition of the thrown being, with all the weight of a constrained body, in a radically strange world where no appeal to any sort of transcendence is possible—a creature condemned to an effort that is metaphysically doomed to failure. My idea was to depict a universe whose ground has fallen away: a world without centre or basis, like in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road or Samuel Beckett’s How It Is, where human beings, uprooted from their previous soil and abandoned to their bodies of mere flesh, would become simply things among things.
