AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF GENETIC INFORMATION: LEPTIN GENOTYPING IN FED CATTLE
The use of genetic knowledge is widespread in crop production but is just recently being utilized in livestock production. This study investigates the economic value to feedlots of a polymorphism in the bovine leptin gene. Previous studies indicate that this polymorphism is associated with fat deposition. Since fed cattle are often priced on a grid that considers both yield and quality grades, fat deposition is an important factor in the value and profitability of fed cattle. Using data from 590 crossbred steers and heifers, we estimate growth curves for relevant biological traits, both with and without genotypic information. Using the resulting functions, we then simulate carcass traits to various days-on-feed and compute the associated profit under three price grids. Maximum profits are determined in an unconstrained profit maximization model and in a model that constrains cattle to be marketed in 45-head "potloads." Results indicate that leptin genotypic knowledge has little impact on optimal days-on-feed but may play a role in valuing feeder cattle. User community vs. producer innovation development efficiency: A first empirical study
In this paper we report upon a first empirical exploration of the relative efficiency of innovation development by product users vs. product producers. In a study of over 50 years of product innovation in the whitewater kayaking field, we find users in aggregate were approximately 3Ă more efficient at developing important kayaking product innovations than were producers in aggregate. We speculate that this result is driven by what we term âefficiencies of scopeâ in problem-solving. These can favor an aggregation of many user innovators, each spending a little, over fewer producer innovators benefitting from higher economies of scale in product development. We also note that the present study explores only one initial point on what is likely to be a complex efficiency landscape
Swimming in circles: Motion of bacteria near solid boundaries
Near a solid boundary, E. coli swims in clockwise circular motion. We provide
a hydrodynamic model for this behavior. We show that circular trajectories are
natural consequences of force-free and torque-free swimming, and the
hydrodynamic interactions with the boundary, which also leads to a hydrodynamic
trapping of the cells close to the surface. We compare the results of the model
with experimental data and obtain reasonable agreement. In particular, we show
that the radius of curvature of the trajectory increases with the length of the

Nicotine is more addictive, not more cognitively therapeutic in a neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia produced by neonatal ventral hippocampal lesions
Nicotine dependence is the leading cause of death in the United States. However, research on high rates of nicotine use in mental illness has primarily explained this co-morbidity as reflecting nicotine's therapeutic benefits, especially for cognitive symptoms, equating smoking with 'self-medication'. We used a leading neurodevelopmental model of mental illness in rats to prospectively test the alternative possibility that nicotine dependence pervades mental illness because nicotine is simply more addictive in mentally ill brains that involve developmental hippocampal dysfunction. Neonatal ventral hippocampal lesions (NVHL) have previously been demonstrated to produce post-adolescent-onset, pharmacological, neurobiological and cognitive-deficit features of schizophrenia. Here, we show that NVHLs increase adult nicotine self-administration, potentiating acquisition-intake, total nicotine consumed and drug seeking. Behavioral sensitization to nicotine in adolescence prior to self-administration is not accentuated by NVHLs in contrast to increased nicotine self-administration and behavioral sensitization documented in adult NVHL rats, suggesting periadolescent neurodevelopmental onset of nicotine addiction vulnerability in the NVHL model. Delivering a nicotine regimen approximating the exposure used in the sensitization and self-administration experiments (i.e. as a treatment) to adult rats did not specifically reverse NVHL-induced cortical-hippocampal-dependent cognitive deficits and actually worsened cognitive efficiency after nicotine treatment stopped, generating deficits that resemble those due to NVHLs. These findings represent the first prospective evidence demonstrating a causal link between disease processes in schizophrenia and nicotine addiction. Developmental cortical-temporal limbic dysfunction in mental illness may thus amplify nicotine's reinforcing effects and addiction risk and severity, even while producing cognitive deficits that are not specifically or substantially reversible with nicotine
Nicotine effects in adolescence and adulthood on cognition and Îąâβâ-nicotinic receptors in the neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion rat model of schizophrenia
Rational
Nicotine use in schizophrenia has traditionally been explained as âself-medicationâ of cognitive and/or nicotinic acetylcholinergic receptor (nAChR) abnormalities.
Objectives
We test this hypothesis in a neurodevelopmental rat model of schizophrenia that shows increased addiction behaviors including enhanced nicotine reinforcement and drug-seeking.
Methods
Nicotine transdermal patch (5 mg/kg/day vs. placebo à 10 days in adolescence or adulthood) effects on subsequent radial-arm maze learning (15 sessions) and frontal-cortical-striatal nAChR densities (ι4β2; [3H]-epibatidine binding) were examined in neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion (NVHL) and SHAM-operated rats.
Results
NVHL cognitive deficits were not differentially affected by nicotine history compared to SHAMs. Nicotine history produced minimal cognitive effects while increasing foodâreward consumption on the maze, compounding with NVHL-induced overconsumption. Acute nicotine (0.5 mg/kg) delivered before the final maze sessions produced modest improvements in maze performance in rats with nicotine patch histories only, but not differentially so in NVHLs. Consistent with in vivo neuroimaging of β2 nAChR binding in schizophrenia smokers vs. non-smokers and healthy controls, adult NVHLs showed 12% reductions in nAChR binding in MPFC (p.40), whereas nicotine history elevated nAChRs across both regions (>30%, p<0.001) without interacting with NVHLs. Adolescent vs. adult nicotine exposure did not alter nAChRs differentially.
Conclusions
Although replicating nicotine-induced up-regulation of nAChRs in human smokers and demonstrating NVHL validity in terms of schizophrenia-associated nAChR density patterns, these findings do not support hypotheses explaining increased nicotine use in schizophrenia as reflecting illness-specific effects of nicotine to therapeutically alter cognition or nAChR densities
Floppy swimming: Viscous locomotion of actuated elastica
Actuating periodically an elastic filament in a viscous liquid generally
breaks the constraints of Purcell's scallop theorem, resulting in the
generation of a net propulsive force. This observation suggests a method to
design simple swimming devices - which we call "elastic swimmers" - where the
actuation mechanism is embedded in a solid body and the resulting swimmer is
free to move. In this paper, we study theoretically the kinematics of elastic
swimming. After discussing the basic physical picture of the phenomenon and the
expected scaling relationships, we derive analytically the elastic swimming
velocities in the limit of small actuation amplitude. The emphasis is on the
coupling between the two unknowns of the problems - namely the shape of the
elastic filament and the swimming kinematics - which have to be solved
simultaneously. We then compute the performance of the resulting swimming
device, and its dependance on geometry. The optimal actuation frequency and
body shapes are derived and a discussion of filament shapes and internal
torques is presented. Swimming using multiple elastic filaments is discussed,
and simple strategies are presented which result in straight swimming
trajectories. Finally, we compare the performance of elastic swimming with that

Spectroscopy of Blue Stragglers and Turnoff Stars in M67 (NGC 2682)
We have analyzed high-resolution spectra of relatively cool blue stragglers
and main sequence turnoff stars in the old open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). We
attempt to identify blue stragglers whose spectra are least contaminated by
binary effects (contamination by a binary companion or absorption by
circumstellar material). These ``best'' stragglers have metallicities ([Fe/H] =
-0.05) and abundance ratios of the blue stragglers are not significantly
different from those of the turnoff stars. Based on arguments from
hydrodynamical models of stellar collisions, we assert that the current upper
limits for the lithium abundances of all blue stragglers observed in M67 (by us
and others) are consistent with no mixing during the formation process,
assuming pre-main sequence and main sequence depletion patterns observed for
M67 main sequence stars. We discuss composition signatures that could more
definitively distinguish between blue straggler formation mechanisms in open
cluster stars.
We confirm the spectroscopic detection of a binary companion to the straggler
S 1082. From our spectra, we measure a projected rotational speed of 90+/-20
km/sec for the secondary, and find that its radial velocity varies with a
peak-to-peak amplitude of ~ 25 km/sec. Because the radial velocities do not
vary with a period corresponding to the partial eclipses in the system, we
believe this system is currently undergoing mass transfer. In addition we
present evidence that S 984 is a true blue straggler (and not an unresolved
pair). If this can be proven, our detection of lithium may indicate a

Interaction between Obesity and the NFKB1 - 94ins/delATTG Promoter Polymorphism in Relation to Incident Acute Coronary Syndrome: A Follow Up Study in Three Independent Cohorts
Introduction: The NF-ÎşB transcription factor family regulates several genes encoding pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory proteins in adipose tissues and in atherosclerotic plaques. The deletion variant allele of the NFKB1 - 94ins/delATTG promoter polymorphism leads to lower transcript levels of the p50 subunit, and the variant allele has been associated with the risk of several inflammatory diseases as well as coronary heart disease where inflammation is important in the pathogenesis. The objective of this study was to explore the potential interaction between the NFKB1-94ins/delATTG promoter polymorphism and general, abdominal, and gluteofemoral obesity in relation to the risk of incident acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in three large independent cohorts. Methods and Results: The analyses were conducted in the Danish prospective study Diet, Cancer and Health and the two US based cohorts; Nursesâ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study. We conducted sex stratified analyses that included 1202 male and 708 female cases of incident ACS. We observed a positive association for general and abdominal obesity with risk of incident ACS, independent of genotype in both genders. Gluteofemoral obesity was negatively associated with ACS risk in women independent of genotype, whereas there was no clear association for men. We calculated the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and observed a statistically significant excess risk among men jointly exposed to general or abdominal obesity and the variant allele of the NFKB1-94ATTG polymorphism, whereas there was a tendency towards sub-additivity for gluteofemoral obesity. The excess risks in all analyses were, however, small and could not clearly be demonstrated in women. Conclusion: The variant allele of the NFKB1-94ins/delATTG promoter polymorphism did not substantially modify the association between obesity and incident ACS
Towards a quality-controlled and accessible Pitzer model for seawater and related systems
We elaborate the need for a quality-controlled chemical speciation model for seawater and related natural waters, work which forms the major focus of SCOR Working Group 145. Model development is based on Pitzer equations for the seawater electrolyte and trace components. These equations can be used to calculate activities of dissolved ions and molecules and, in combination with thermodynamic equilibrium constants, chemical speciation. The major tasks to be addressed are ensuring internal consistency of the Pitzer model parameters (expressing the interactions between pairs and triplets of species, which ultimately determines the calculated activities), assessing uncertainties, and identifying important data gaps that should be addressed by new measurements. It is recognised that natural organic matter plays an important role in many aquatic ecosystems, and options for including this material in a Pitzer-based model are discussed. The process of model development begins with the core components which include the seawater electrolyte and the weak acids controlling pH. This core model can then be expanded by incorporating additional chemical components, changing the standard seawater composition and/or broadening the range of temperature and pressure, without compromising its validity. Seven important areas of application are identified: open ocean acidification; micro-nutrient biogeochemistry and geochemical tracers; micro-nutrient behaviour in laboratory studies; water quality in coastal and estuarine waters; cycling of nutrients and trace metals in pore waters; chemical equilibria in hydrothermal systems; brines and salt lakes
