HYDROTHERMAL TREATMENT OF EUCALYPTUS GRANDIS WOOD

 Among the technological alternatives to improve the quality and use of eucalyptus wood is heat treatment, as the wood has some features that may limit its use, such as dimensional instability, high anisotropy, and heterogeneous coloring. This study is aimed at evaluating the effect of time of hydrothermal treatment on physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of solid wood of Eucalyptus grandis. We used three trees of E. grandis, selecting only the heartwood, and prepared test specimens with dimensions of 30cmx8cmx3cm (length, width, and thickness). The hydrothermal treatment was performed in a Parr reactor using three reaction times (5, 15, and 25min) at 140°C. Partial removal of extractives occurred, especially in the outer layer of wood. There was an increase of up to 58% of its permeability because of the partial clearing of the vessel elements. There was no degradation of the main constituents of the wood, so loss of mechanical strength was observed. The hydrothermal treatment promoted the partial removal of the hydroxyl groups and/or a structural rearrangement of the hemicelluloses and cellulose, causing a reduction of the hygroscopicity of E. grandis.

Desfibrilador externo automático (DEA): importância da sua operacionalização eficiente e acesso facilitado no âmbito extra-hospitalar / Automatic external defibrillator (AED): importance of its efficient operation and facilitated access in the extra-hospital scope

O Desfibrilador Externo Automático (DEA) é um dispositivo portátil, que pode ser monofásico e bifásico, e sua utilização precoce faz parte das Diretrizes do Suporte Básico de Vida (BLS) da American Heart Association (AHA) visto que a desfibrilação em até 1 minuto o paciente possui uma chance de 90% de sobreviver. Além disso, esse aparelho pode ser manuseado tanto por profissionais quanto por leigos que possuam o treinamento no BLS, visto que o DEA tem um sistema computadorizado que orienta quem o manuseia acerca da conduta, e o próprio aparelho faz a análise do ritmo cardíaco e detecta se há a necessidade da desfibrilação. Tendo isso em mente, é de extrema importância a presença do DEA em locais públicos e privados que possuem grande circulação, ademais o aparelho deve estar bem sinalizado facilitando sua localização, e assim, aumentando as chances de sobrevida do paciente

PRÁTICA ESPORTIVA E NÍVEL DE ATIVIDADE FÍSICA: ESCOLARES DA REGIÃO DO NORTE DO PARANÁ E SUDOESTE DE SÃO PAULO

Dada a importância da prática esportiva e nível de atividade física durante os períodos de infância e adolescência, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo verificar a relação entre a dependência administrativa da escola e a prática de atividade física de escolares, com intuito de averiguar se há divergência entre o comportamento de escolares da rede pública em relação aos de escolas privadas. Foi realizado um questionário de estilo de vida adaptado para território brasileiro em uma amostra de 121 estudantes de escolas públicas e privadas da região norte do Paraná e sudoeste de São Paulo, dos 11 aos 16 anos. Os resultados entre os grupos não foram diferentes, apontando os esportes coletivos, principalmente Futebol, Futsal e Voleibol, como os mais praticados nesta faixa etária, enquanto ao NAF, foi possível observar que não há diferença significativa na prática esportiva e nível de atividades entre escolares de dependências públicas e privadas

Efeito da testosterona na hemostasia em portadores da deficiência androgênica do envelhecimento masculino

With aging, androgen levels gradually decline. In adult men, the decline in testosterone levels associated with signs and symptoms is presented as androgen deficiency of male aging (ADEM), some of these signs and symptoms are: decreased libido, depression, erectile dysfunction, anemia, decreased bone density and muscle mass. Testosterone is a hormone belonging to the androgen class. Its function is related to the maintenance of the sexual organs, but it also has an effect on non-reproductive organs such as the liver, inducing the synthesis of hepatic lipases and coagulation factors. Testosterone is also associated with increased activity of the fibrinolytic system and antithrombin III, constituents of the physiological hemostatic mechanism against blood loss and fluidity. Given the importance of testosterone, its replacement has been widely prescribed for men without a diagnosis of hypogonadism, given that adults after the age of 60 have testosterone levels below the lower limits for adults. In view of the above, the aim of this study is to carry out a literature review on the benefits of testosterone replacement treatment on hemostasis in men with androgen deficiency in male aging. This is a descriptive literature review with a qualitative approach. The study population will consist of articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish, obtained from the Scielo, Google Scholar and PubMed databases. A total of 53 articles were selected for sampling, 33 of which met the inclusion criteria. In this context, testosterone replacement therapy has a protective endothelial action, increasing the activity of the fibrinolytic system and antithrombin activity, which are responsible for dissolving and neutralizing clots.Com o envelhecimento os níveis de andrógenos decaem de forma gradual, no homem adulto o decaimento nos níveis de testosterona associado a sinais e sintomas apresenta-se como a deficiência androgênica do envelhecimento masculino (DAEM), alguns desses sinais e sintomas são: queda da libido, depressão, disfunção erétil, anemia, diminuição da densidade óssea e massa muscular. A testosterona é um hormônio pertencente à classe dos andrógenos, sua função está relacionada com a manutenção dos órgãos sexuais, possuindo efeito também sobre órgãos não reprodutivos como o fígado, induzindo a síntese das lipases hepáticas e fatores da coagulação. A testosterona também está associada ao aumento da atividade do sistema fibrinolítico e antitrombina III, constituintes do mecanismo hemostático fisiológico contra perda de sangue, bem como sua fluidez. Tendo em vista a importância da testosterona, a sua reposição tem sido amplamente prescrita para homens sem diagnostico de hipogonodismo, visto que adultos após os 60 anos apresentam níveis de testosterona abaixo dos limites inferiores para adultos. Diante do exposto, o objetivo desse estudo é realizar uma revisão bibliográfica sobre os benefícios do tratamento com a reposição de testosterona na hemostasia em homens com deficiência androgênica do envelhecimento masculino. Este trabalho trata-se de uma revisão de literatura, descritiva com abordagem qualitativa, a população em estudo será constituída por artigos em português, inglês e espanhol, obtidos nas bases de dados do Scielo, Google Acadêmico e PubMed. Para a amostragem, foram selecionados 53 artigos, dos quais 33 se enquadraram nos critérios de inclusão. Nesse contexto a terapia com reposição de testosterona possui ação endotelial protetora, aumentando a atividade do sistema fibrinolítico e atividade de antitrombina, responsáveis pela dissolução e neutralização do coágulo

Biomass torrefaction for energy purposes – Definitions and an overview of challenges and opportunities in Brazil

Torrefaction is a thermal treatment with high potential to be applied in the production of solid fuel from lignocellulosic biomasses. This treatment promotes an increase in the energy quality of the raw material, making it a more attractive and competitive source within the primary energy matrix. However, the production of torrefied biomass on a commercial scale is still at an early stage of development with only a few industrial facilities around the world. Although not one of the pioneering countries in biomass torrefaction, Brazil has a great potential for large-scale deployment in this sector due to its availability of agroforestry biomass in quantity and diversity. The Brazilian agricultural and forestry production is one of the largest in the world with favorable conditions to expand it sustainably. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application potential of torrefaction in the solid fuel's production from lignocellulosic biomasses in Brazil. In the first part, it showed the definitions, use for energy purposes and the Brazilian production of agroforestry biomass. In the second part, it reviewed the definitions of thermal treatments, differences between dry and wet torrefaction process, biomass hydrolysis and torrefaction technologies. In the third part, the challenges and opportunities of the Brazilian commercial torrefaction are discussed

Neotropical freshwater fisheries : A dataset of occurrence and abundance of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change.
