Estimation of Gender wage Discrimination in the Portuguese labour market

    Get PDF
Gender wage discrimination is a reality in the Portuguese labour markets although no study has been until now carried on to measure its dimension. We think that economists should contribute to the knowledge of the dimension and significance of this phenomenon by giving orientation for the definition of political measures towards its reduction. In this paper we measure the size of gender wage discrimination in the Portuguese labour market. Furthermore, we evaluate this measure for the five Portuguese main regions. In recent literature about the measurement of gender wage discrimination the Oaxaca decomposition and its developments is a commonly used approach. We extend this approach using bootstrap techniques for statistical inference purposes.

Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Bicycle-to-X Communication Networks

The growing connectivity of vehicles and Vulnerable Road Users, i.e., pedestrians and cyclists, allows to explore solutions based on wireless communication to support safety, efficiency and infotainment applications. However, there are few communication technologies that enjoy similar penetration ratios on cars, bicycles and pedestrians.WiFi is one of such technologies, as can be found in smart phones and in on-board hotspots. This thesis aims to characterize experimentally the wireless link performance and develop a model to estimate the received signal strength (RSS) between WiFi devices installed on bicycles and cars equipped with built-in WiFi APs.The RSS estimation model extends existing empirical models (e.g., the Log-Distance Path Loss model) by including the shadowing of the bicycle-and-cyclist system and of a vehicle. We first characterize the radiation pattern of antennas installed in several mounting points of a bicycle, in order to reduce the set of mounting points to be explored in future measurements. We then measured the radiation pattern of the bicycle and cyclist system, and the radiation pattern of a car with built-in and dedicated WiFi access points. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the model by comparing RSS estimates and measurements collected in selected interaction scenarios between bicycles and car: (i) bicycle overtaking a parked car, (ii) perpendicular crossing with LOS, and (iii) without LOS. We observed that 50% of the RSS estimates our model underestimates by less than are within 10 dBs of measured values about 50% of the RSSI values for the scenarios in LOS, and overestimates the RSSI values by more than 5 DBs about 75% of the RSSI values for the scenario containing obstructions

The caatinga is a deciduous and xerophilous vegetation that covers large areas in Brazil. An irregular rainfall with a marked dry period is a characteristic feature. This paper represents the first contribution to the knowledge of the bryoflora from caatinga vegetation in the State of Bahia. The survey was carried out in several areas from Bahia in which eigthteen species of bryophytes were found (15 mosses and 3 liverworts). The bryoflora from caatinga is composed mainly of generalists and xerophilous taxa, but even some hygrophilous species can be found. A number of species including Hyophiladelphus agrarius, Hyophila involuta, Calymperes palisotii ssp. richardii, Bryum argenteum, Entodontopsis leucostega, Octoblepharum albidum, Frullania ericoides also occur in other vegetation types. However, there are a number of species restricted to this type of vegetation, such as Helicophyllum torquatum and Riccia vitalii, at least in Bahia. Most moss species were acrocarpous with erect and short (short-turf) growth-form, whereas the foliose hepaticae were of incubous, and thallose forms

ABSTRACT - Depression is a highly prevalent and very disabling disease. Different factors may contribute to its development and, even in mild cases, depression causes a loss of productivity and generates high indirect costs to society. Literature on the Portuguese context is scarce and not up to date. This study intended to provide additional and updated information on the indirect costs of depression due to absenteeism and on disease prevalence in the years of 2014 and 2019 for the adult population. The study used data from the population-based National Health Surveys of 2014 and 2019 to study the prevalence, risk factors and association of depression to work absence. The indirect costs were estimated based on these data and on the average monthly earnings in Portugal from the Instituto Nacional de Estatística. The prevalence of depression in the adult Portuguese inhabitants increased from 2014 to 2019 both in the general (13.7 vs 15.1%) and working populations (7.8 vs 9.2%). Having depression represented an additional work absence of 10.3 to 33.0 days in 2014 and between 15.2 to 41.0 days in 2019. The mean individual excess cost related to depression varied between 535.12 and 1,716.09 EUR in 2014 and between 852.45 and 2,291.11 EUR in 2019. These values may represent 163-524 million EUR in 2014 and 294-790 million EUR in 2019 when considering the Portuguese workforce. These results demonstrate the importance of an intervention to improve mental health care to the Portuguese society and implement cost-effective measures.RESUMO - A depressão é uma doença altamente prevalente e incapacitante.
