These species were found in theTropical Atlantic Rainforest situated in the South of Bahia.INTRODUCTIONThe Brazilian bryophyte flora isrepresented by ca. 3125 species (Yano, 1996) ofwhich, 788 taxa are pleurocarpous mosses, andthe bryoflora of Bahia is represented by ca. 320species. Four new records for the state of Bahiaare reported for the first time: Phyllodontruncatulus (Mül. Hal.) W. R. Buck,  Potamiumlonchophyllum (Mont.) Mitt., Trichosteleumbrachydictyon (Besch.) A. Jaeger andSematophyllum tequendamense (Hampe) Mitt.These records represent an additionalcontribution to our knowledge of the Brazilianbryoflora.Phyllodon truncatulus, Potamiumlonchophyllum, Trichosteleum brachydictyonand Sematophyllum tequendamense were foundat the  “Estação Veracruz”, a private biologicalreserve that presents an expressive primaryTropical Atlantic Rainforest fragment, situatedin the South Region of the state of Bahia andoccupies around 6,000 ha between Porto Seguroand Santa Cruz de Cabrália counties. Thisecosystem presents suitable conditions for thegrowth of pleurocarpous mosses due mainly tohigh atmospheric humidity.All  specimens are deposited at AlexandreLeal Costa Herbarium (ALCB) of the Institutode Biologia da Universidade Federal da Bahia,Brazil. Leaves ovate, concave; costa shortand double, absent in branch leaves; apex broadlyobtuse; margins plane, entire to  slightly dentatebellow, strongly serrate above due to projectingpapillae; alar region scarcely differentiated, 1-2hyaline cells; cells brownish across insertion;median cells fusiform, seriately papillose;papillae large, branched; basal cells elongate,rectangular, 1-2 papillose or smooth. Phyllodon.truncatulus represents a rediscovery for Brazilsince it was previously cited only by Hampe &Geheeb (1881 apud Yano 1981) as Hypnum onlyfor São Paulo, and by Crum & Steere (1957 apudYano 1981) as Glossadelphus truncatulus, butwithout locality of occurrence.2. VI, 3: 252. 1876.Type-locality: ?Figures 11-20Gametophyte green, robust, prostrate,irregularly branched. Stem in cross section 2-3rows of small thick-walled cells surroundinglarger cells. Leaves concave, ovate-lanceolate,median cells porose, fusiform to narrowlyrhomboidal; papillae -1 on lumina, only in theupper ½ of leaves; costa absent; apical cells notdifferentiated; apex gradually long-acuminate,twisted at times; margin serrulate above, entirebellow; alar region strongly differentiated, 2-3cells elongate, yellow-reddish, inflated; supraalar cells few, short, quadrate to rectangular.Perichetial leaves lanceolate, long-acuminate,margin strongly serrulate above, subentirebellow; alar region not differentiated. Setae long(8,5 - 9,0 mm), smooth. Capsule small (0,4 - 0,5mm), globose, inclined to pendent. Trichosteleum brachydictyon, according toBuck (1983, 1998), is recognized by its stronglyporose cells. However, in the studied specimens,the cells are less porose than that reported byBuck (op. cit.), but agree with the othercharacters. Buck (1983) pointed out that thisspecies seems to be confined to the LesserAntilles, although it has also been reported forPuerto Rico. The lack of records for Brazil atmoment, may be due to intensive destruction ofAtlantic Forest or little study in this area.Sematophyllum tequendamense (Hampe) Mitt.,J. Linn. Soc. These first records for Brazilmay be likely due to little study in the AtlanticForest, as well as to their rapid destruction.Potamium lonchophyllum (Mont.) Mitt. J. Linn.Soc. Bot. 12: 477. 1869Basionym: Hypnum lonchophyllum Mont. Syll.10. 1856.Type-locality: French GuianaFigures 29-47Gametophyte dull-green to green-yellowish, prostrate, with long branchingsparcely to densely foliate. Stem in cross section3-4 rows of thick-walled cells surrounding largercells. Leaves lanceolate to ligulate; costa absent;median cells narrowly fusiform; apical cellsshorter and larger; apex acute; margin dentate;at times folded in the lower 1/2 - 1/3; alar regiondifferentiated, 2 cells elongate and inflated; supraalar cells oblong to irregular. Perichaetial leavesovate to ovate-lanceolate, shorter than vegetativeleaves, apex acute to norrowly acute, cells thick-walled; basal cells quadrate-rectangular; marginstrongly serrulate above, entire below; marginalcells rectangular in the base, narrowlyrhomboidal above; alar region not differentiated.Setae long, ca. 9 mm, smooth, reddish. Capsulesmall, ca. 1,8 mm,  cylindric, inclined;operculum conic, short-rostrate; exothecial  cellscollenchymatous, often bulging. Peristomedouble, exostome well developed; teeth striolatebellow; with a zig-zag median line; segments ofendostome smooth.Specimens examined: Brazil, Bahia, EstaçãoVeracruz, EVC/Imbiruçu boundary, 9-9-1999, C.Bastos & S.B.Vilas Bôas Bastos 1671, 1701,1702, 1714, 1731 (ALCB 41682, 41676, 41677,41678, 41680).Geographic distribution: Colombia (Churchill &Linares C. 1995), Brazil (Yano 1981, 1995)Comments: The specimens  were found ondecaying logs on the border of and also inside atemporary lagoon. Is reported for Brazil only inthe Amazonic Region by  Florschütz-de Waard(1992 apud Yano 1995) as Sematophyllumlonchophyllum and Brotherus (1906, 1925 apudYano 1981) as Potamium uleanum. Potamiumlonchophyllum is recognized by its leaveslanceolate to ligulate and branches sparcelyfoliate. However, other studied specimenscollected on the live trunk base, not immersed,shows branches densely foliate and bearingsporophytes (Figs.36-47).FINAL COMMENTSIn this Atlantic Forest area  situated atthe South region of Bahia, a few phanerogamicAmazon elements have been spoted (data yet notpublished), the same seems to be true forbryophytes, since among four of these newrecords presented in this paper, three areAmazonian elements: Phillodon truncatulus,Sematophyllum tequendamense and Potamiumlonchophyllum.Phillodon truncatulus is reported in theliterature as an epixylic species.
