    On marine polychaeta from Mandapam (South India)

    During a stay at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Station, Mandapam Camp (S. India), in April 1958, an opportunity arose to collect some Polychaetes from the Gulf of Marmar. Special attention was paid to the small forms which hitherto have been rather neglected in Indian waters. The 17 samples taken comprise 50-55 species, most of which cannot be identified at present owing to lack of literature. Eight of them, from groups more familiar to the author, have been selected for a detailed study. Of these, Prionospio sexoculata Augener has already been recorded in this area ; but Prionospio malmgreni Claparede and Oriopsis armandi (Claparede) are new to India ; Poecilochaetus serpens (Claparede) and Raphidrilus nemasoma Monticelli are new to the Indian Ocean while Dorvillea mandapamae, Oriopsis coalescens and Augeneriella hummelincki Banse, subsp. indica are new to science. Fauvel (1953) estimated that the 450 species of Polychaetes known from India, represent hardly more than one half of the number to be expected. It may be added that comparatively few small species have been collected from the region of the Indo-West-Pacific so far; thus, it may be assumed that among the smaller forms of Polychaetes, as well as of other invertebrate groups, a vast number still remains to be discovered in this region. It may be mentioned that in the present material, of the subfamily Exogoninae of the Syllidae, alone, three species have been found (Exogone sp., Sphaerosyllis sp. and Brania sp.) though biotopes favoured by them, like the phytal proper, or coral reefs, have not been touched. This subfamily was not previously recorded from India. Among the Sabellidae also, Amphiglena mediterranea (Leydig) is new to India

    On upwelling and bottom-trawling off the southwest coast of India

    While starting an investigation on basic production off Cochin at the southwest coast of India, a section across the shelf with serial observations on temperature, salinity, and oxygen content was run in the last week of August 1958. The bottom water was observed to be very badly aerated, and from the hydrographic data it was inferred that these conditions were connected with upwelling. Berner and Schemainda (1957) have shown for the basins of the Baltic that at low oxygen figures the cod either migrates away or turns to midwater life so that bottom trawling becomes unprofitable. Therefore, it was thought worthwhile to investigate closely the upwelling and its effect on the catch of demersal fishes off Cochin

    Iron, silicate, and light co-limitation of three Southern Ocean diatom species

    The effect of combined iron, silicate, and light co-limitation was investigated in the three diatom species Actinocyclus sp. Ehrenberg, Chaetoceros dichaeta Ehrenberg, and Chaetoceros debilis Cleve, isolated from the Southern Ocean (SO). Growth of all species was co-limited by iron and silicate, reflected in a significant increase in the number of cell divisions compared to the control. Lowest relative Si uptake and drastic frustule malformation was found under iron and silicate co-limitation in C. dichaeta, while Si limitation in general caused cell elongation in both Chaetoceros species. Higher light intensities similar to SO surface conditions showed a negative impact on growth of C. dichaeta and Actinocyclus sp. and no effect on C. debilis. This is in contrast to the assumed light limitation of SO diatoms due to deep wind driven mixing. Our results suggest that growth and species composition of Southern Ocean diatoms is influenced by a sensitive interaction of the abiotic factors, iron, silicate, and light

    Decadal changes of the Western Arabian sea ecosystem

    Historical data from oceanographic expeditions and remotely sensed data on outgoing longwave radiation, temperature, wind speed and ocean color in the western Arabian Sea (1950–2010) were used to investigate decadal trends in the physical and biochemical properties of the upper 300 m. 72 % of the 29,043 vertical profiles retrieved originated from USA and UK expeditions. Increasing outgoing longwave radiation, surface air temperatures and sea surface temperature were identified on decadal timescales. These were well correlated with decreasing wind speeds associated with a reduced Siberian High atmospheric anomaly. Shoaling of the oxycline and nitracline was observed as well as acidification of the upper 300 m. These physical and chemical changes were accompanied by declining chlorophyll-a concentrations, vertical macrofaunal habitat compression, declining sardine landings and an increase of fish kill incidents along the Omani coast

    Cross validation of bi-modal health-related stress assessment

    This study explores the feasibility of objective and ubiquitous stress assessment. 25 post-traumatic stress disorder patients participated in a controlled storytelling (ST) study and an ecologically valid reliving (RL) study. The two studies were meant to represent an early and a late therapy session, and each consisted of a "happy" and a "stress triggering" part. Two instruments were chosen to assess the stress level of the patients at various point in time during therapy: (i) speech, used as an objective and ubiquitous stress indicator and (ii) the subjective unit of distress (SUD), a clinically validated Likert scale. In total, 13 statistical parameters were derived from each of five speech features: amplitude, zero-crossings, power, high-frequency power, and pitch. To model the emotional state of the patients, 28 parameters were selected from this set by means of a linear regression model and, subsequently, compressed into 11 principal components. The SUD and speech model were cross-validated, using 3 machine learning algorithms. Between 90% (2 SUD levels) and 39% (10 SUD levels) correct classification was achieved. The two sessions could be discriminated in 89% (for ST) and 77% (for RL) of the cases. This report fills a gap between laboratory and clinical studies, and its results emphasize the usefulness of Computer Aided Diagnostics (CAD) for mental health care

    Wintertime phytoplankton bloom in the subarctic Pacific supported by continental margin iron

The definitive version was published in Global Biogeochemical Cycles 20 (2006): GB1006, doi:10.1029/2005GB002557.Heightened biological activity was observed in February 1996 in the high-nutrient low-chlorophyll (HNLC) subarctic North Pacific Ocean, a region that is thought to be iron-limited. Here we provide evidence supporting the hypothesis that Ocean Station Papa (OSP) in the subarctic Pacific received a lateral supply of particulate iron from the continental margin off the Aleutian Islands in the winter, coincident with the observed biological bloom. Synchrotron X-ray analysis was used to describe the physical form, chemistry, and depth distributions of iron in size fractionated particulate matter samples. The analysis reveals that discrete micron-sized iron-rich hot spots are ubiquitous in the upper 200 m at OSP, more than 900 km from the closest coast. The specifics of the chemistry and depth profiles of the Fe hot spots trace them to the continental margins. We thus hypothesize that iron hot spots are a marker for the delivery of iron from the continental margin. We confirm the delivery of continental margin iron to the open ocean using an ocean general circulation model with an iron-like tracer source at the continental margin.     Global assessment of ocean carbon export by combining satellite observations and food-web models

    The export of organic carbon from the surface ocean by sinking particles is an important, yet highly uncertain, component of the global carbon cycle. Here we introduce a mechanistic assessment of the global ocean carbon export using satellite observations, including determinations of net primary production and the slope of the particle size spectrum, to drive a food-web model that estimates the production of sinking zooplankton feces and algal aggregates comprising the sinking particle flux at the base of the euphotic zone. The synthesis of observations and models reveals fundamentally different and ecologically consistent regional-scale patterns in export and export efficiency not found in previous global carbon export assessments. The model reproduces regional-scale particle export field observations and predicts a climatological mean global carbon export from the euphotic zone of ~6 Pg C yr−1. Global export estimates show small variation (typically < 10%) to factor of 2 changes in model parameter values. The model is also robust to the choices of the satellite data products used and enables interannual changes to be quantified.     Observed anomalous upwelling in the Lakshadweep Sea during the summer monsoon season of 2005

    Repeat near-fortnightly expendable bathythermograph (XBT) transects made along Kochi-Kavaratti (KK) shipping lane in the Lakshadweep Sea (LS) during 2002–2006 are examined to describe the observed year-to-year variability of upwelling during summer monsoon season (SMS). Among all the years, the upwelling characterized by up-sloping of 25°C isotherm is relatively weaker and persisted until November during SMS of 2005 and is stronger during the SMS of 2002. As a result of prolonged upwelling, the sea surface temperature has shown cooling extending into the postmonsoon season. The estimated marine pelagic fish landings along the southwest coast of India (SWCI) have also shown increase until December. The governing mechanisms both in terms of local and remote forcings are examined to explain the observed anomalous upwelling during SMS of 2005. The equatorward alongshore wind stress (WS) along the KK XBT transect persisted in a transient manner beyond September only during SMS of 2005. The westerly wind bursts over the equator during the winter of 2004–2005 are both short-lived and relatively weaker triggering weaker upwelling Kelvin waves that propagated into LS in the following SMS of 2005. The observed distribution of negative sea surface height anomaly in the LS is relatively weaker during the SMS of 2005 and lasted longer. The correlation analysis suggests that the local alongshore WS off the SWCI and the remote forcing from the southern coast of Sri Lanka has greater influence on the observed interannual variability of upwelling in the LS when compared to the remote forcing from the equator
