Formation of Short-Period Binary Pulsars in Globular Clusters
We present a new dynamical scenario for the formation of short-period binary
millisecond pulsars in globular clusters. Our work is motivated by the recent
observations of 20 radio pulsars in 47 Tuc. In a dense cluster such as 47 Tuc,
most neutron stars acquire binary companions through exchange interactions with
primordial binaries. The resulting systems have semimajor axes in the range
\~0.1-1 AU and neutron star companion masses ~1-3 Msun. For many of these
systems we find that, when the companion evolves off the main sequence and
fills its Roche lobe, the subsequent mass transfer is dynamically unstable.
This leads to a common envelope phase and the formation of short-period neutron
star - white dwarf binaries. For a significant fraction of these binaries, the
decay of the orbit due to gravitational radiation will be followed by a period
of stable mass transfer driven by a combination of gravitational radiation and
tidal heating of the companion. The properties of the resulting short-period
binaries match well those of observed binary pulsars in 47 Tuc.Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters, slightly abbreviated version with only

Analysis of Dynamic Load Factor in a Fail-safe Crane Equipped with a Hydraulic Equalizing Cylinder
A model is proposed for the dynamic behavior of an equalizing cylinder when coupled to a fail-safe crane mechanism. The constitutive equations involve the continuity of the fluid in the equilizing bar and time-dependent incompressible one-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for the detailed motion of the cylinder coupled with the dynamics of the traveling block and the elastic cable. These yields a nonlinear 2nd-order ordinary differential equations. The results for the Dynamic Load Factor (DLF) is presented

Risk as reward: Reinforcement sensitivity theory and psychopathic personality perspectives on everyday risk-taking
This study updates and synthesises research on the extent to which impulsive and antisocial disposition predicts everyday pro- and antisocial risk-taking behaviour. We use the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) of personality to measure approach, avoidance, and inhibition dispositions, as well as measures of Callous-Unemotional and psychopathic personalities. In an international sample of 454 respondents, results showed that RST, psychopathic personality, and callous-unemotional measures accounted for different aspects of risk-taking behaviour. Specifically, traits associated with ‘fearlessness’ related more to ‘prosocial’ (recreational and social) risk-taking, whilst traits associated with ‘impulsivity’ related more to ‘antisocial’ (ethical and health) risk-taking. Further, we demonstrate that psychopathic personality may be demonstrated by combining the RST and callous-unemotional traits (high impulsivity, callousness, and low fear). Overall this study showed how impulsive, fearless and antisocial traits can be used in combination to identify pro- and anti-social risk-taking behaviours; suggestions for future research are indicated
Impact of Redshift Information on Cosmological Applications with Next-Generation Radio Surveys
In this paper, we explore how the forthcoming generation of large-scale radio
continuum surveys, with the inclusion of some degree of redshift information,
can constrain cosmological parameters. By cross-matching these radio surveys
with shallow optical to near-infrared surveys, we can essentially separate the
source distribution into a low- and a high-redshift sample, thus providing a
constraint on the evolution of cosmological parameters such as those related to
dark energy. We examine two radio surveys, the Evolutionary Map of the Universe
(EMU) and the Westerbork Observations of the Deep APERTIF Northern sky (WODAN).
A crucial advantage is their combined potential to provide a deep, full-sky
survey. The surveys used for the cross-identifications are SkyMapper and SDSS,
for the southern and northern skies, respectively. We concentrate on the galaxy
clustering angular power spectrum as our benchmark observable, and find that
the possibility of including such low redshift information yields major
improvements in the determination of cosmological parameters. With this
approach, and provided a good knowledge of the galaxy bias evolution, we are
able to put strict constraints on the dark energy parameters, i.e.
w_0=-0.9+/-0.041 and w_a=-0.24+/-0.13, with type Ia supernovae and CMB priors
(with a one-parameter bias in this case); this corresponds to a Figure of Merit
(FoM) > 600, which is twice better than what is obtained by using only the
cross-identified sources and greater than four time better than the case

Numerical Modeling of 90Sr and 137Cs Transport from a Spill in the B-Cell of the 324 Building, Hanford Site 300 Area
To characterize the extent of contamination under the 324 Building, a pit was excavated on the north side of the building in 2010 by Washington Closure Hanford LLC (WCH). Horizontal closed-end steel access pipes were installed under the foundation of the building from this pit and were used for measuring temperatures and exposure rates under the B-Cell. The deployed sensors measured elevated temperatures of up to 61 C (142 F) and exposure rates of up to 8,900 R/hr. WCH suspended deactivation of the facility because it recognized that building safety systems and additional characterization data might be needed for remediation of the contaminated material. The characterization work included additional field sampling, laboratory measurements, and numerical flow and transport modeling. Laboratory measurements of sediment physical, hydraulic, and geochemical properties were performed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and others. Geochemical modeling and subsurface flow and transport modeling also were performed by PNNL to evaluate the possible extent of contamination in the unsaturated sand and gravel sediments underlying the building. Historical records suggest that the concentrated 137Cs- and 90Sr-bearing liquid wastes that were spilled in B-Cell were likely from a glass-waste repository testing program associated with the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). Incomplete estimates of the aqueous chemical composition (no anion data provided) of the FRG waste solutions were entered into a geochemical speciation model and were charge balanced with nitrate to estimate waste composition. Additional geochemical modeling was performed to evaluate reactions of the waste stream with the concrete foundation of the building prior to the stream entering the subsurface
Hepatic STAT1-Nuclear Translocation and Interleukin 28B Polymorphisms Predict Treatment Outcomes in Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 1-Infected Patients
We investigated associations between signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 1 in pretreated liver tissues, interleukin (IL) 28B polymorphism and treatment response in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients treated with peginterferon and ribavirin.We performed immunostaining analysis of STAT1 in liver tissues and determined IL28B polymorphism at rs8099917. We then compared the results with treatment outcomes in HCV genotype 1 patients with high viral load who were receiving peginterferon plus ribavirin. In univariate analysis, younger age, white blood cell counts, virological responder, early virological responder (EVR), mild activity (A1) of liver inflammation grading, and lower STAT1 nuclear-stain of hepatocytes in zone 1, zone 2 and total zones of liver were associated with sustained virological responder (SVR). Multivariate analysis showed that EVR, age and hepatic STAT1 nuclear-stain in zone 2 of liver were independent predictors of SVR. It was also revealed that IL28B and STAT1-nuclear translocation in hepatocytes are independent predictors of response to treatment with peginterferon and ribavirin in chronic hepatitis C patients.Concomitant assessment of lower STAT1 nuclear-stain of hepatocytes and IL28B polymorphism is useful for prediction of SVR in HCV genotype 1 patients
