Probing the Galactic Dark Matter Mass Funtion Using Microlensing and Direct Searches
If compact baryonic objects contribute significantly to the dark matter in
our Galaxy, their mass function will present vital clues for galaxy formation
theories and star formation processes in the early Universe. Here we discuss
what one might expect to learn about the mass function of Galactic dark matter
from microlensing and from direct searches in the infrared and optical
wavebands. Current microlensing results from the \eros\/ collaboration already
constrain halo mass functions which extend below 10^{-4}~\sm, whilst recent
\hst\/ observations place strong constraints on disc and halo dark matter mass
functions extending above 0.1~\sm. Infrared observations should either detect
or constrain objects larger than 0.01~\sm in the near future. Objects below
0.01~\sm should be detectable through microlensing, although the prospects of

Plasma Turbulence in the Local Bubble
Turbulence in the Local Bubble could play an important role in the
thermodynamics of the gas that is there. The best astronomical technique for
measuring turbulence in astrophysical plasmas is radio scintillation.
Measurements of the level of scattering to the nearby pulsar B0950+08 by
Philips and Clegg in 1992 showed a markedly lower value for the line-of-sight
averaged turbulent intensity parameter is smaller than normal for two of them, but is completely nominal for
the third. This inconclusive status of affairs could be improved by
measurements and analysis of ``arcs'' in ``secondary spectra'' of pulsars.Comment: Submitted to Space Science Reviews as contribution to Proceedings of

Issues in Research on the Young Chronically III Child
A major goal of research on chronic illness in children is to determine how the illness interacts with developmental processes. The child must be studied within the context of the family, the school, and the health care system. Problems in research include the use of appropriate control groups and matching on control variables. The generic, or cross-categorical, approach has led to the identification of factors affecting children regardless of particular illness. Spin Fluctuations and the Magnetic Phase Diagram of ZrZn2
The magnetic properties of the weak itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn_2 are analyzed
using Landau theory based on a comparison of density functional calculations
and experimental data as a function of field and pressure. We find that the
magnetic properties are strongly affected by the nearby quantum critical point,
even at zero pressure; LDA calculations neglecting quantum critical spin
fluctuations overestimate the magnetization by a factor of approximately three.
Using renormalized Landau theory, we extract pressure dependence of the
fluctuation amplitude. It appears that a simple scaling based on the
fluctuation-dissipation theorem provides a good description of this pressure

The Supernova Relic Neutrino Background
An upper bound to the supernova relic neutrino background from all past Type
II supernovae is obtained using observations of the Universal metal enrichment
history. We show that an unambiguous detection of these relic neutrinos by the
Super-Kamiokande detector is unlikely. We also analyze the event rate in the
Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (where coincident neutrons from anti-nu_e + D -->
n + n + e+ might enhance background rejection), and arrive at the same
conclusion. If the relic neutrino flux should be observed to exceed our upper
bound and if the observations of the metal enrichment history (for z<1) are not
in considerable error, then either the Type II supernova rate does not track
the metal enrichment history or some mechanism may be responsible for
transforming anti-nu_{mu,tau} --> anti-nu_e.Comment: Matches version accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Guidance does not specify which typing technique is most practical to base decisions on. Aim: We explore the usefulness of whole genome sequencing (WGS) in the investigation of a Pseudomonas aeruginosa outbreak describing how it compares with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis. Methods: Six patient isolates and six environmental samples from an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) positive for P. aeruginosa over two years underwent VNTR, PFGE and WGS. Findings:Â VNTR and PFGE were required to fully determine the potential source of infection and rule out others. WGS results unambiguously distinguished linked isolates giving greater assurance of the transmission route between wash hand basin (WHB) water and two patients supporting control measures employed. Conclusion:Â WGS provided detailed information without need for further typing. When allied to epidemiological information it can be used to understand outbreak situations rapidly and with certainty. Implementation of WGS in real-time would be a major advance in day-to-day practice. It could become a standard of care as it becomes more widespread due to its reproducibility and reduction in costs.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Endemic fungal infections in solid organ and hematopoietic cell transplant recipients enrolled in the TransplantâAssociated Infection Surveillance Network ( TRANSNET )
Background Invasive fungal infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among solid organ transplant ( SOT ) and hematopoietic cell transplant ( HCT ) recipients, but few data have been reported on the epidemiology of endemic fungal infections in these populations. Methods Fifteen institutions belonging to the TransplantâAssociated Infection Surveillance Network prospectively enrolled SOT and HCT recipients with histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, or coccidioidomycosis occurring between March 2001 and March 2006. Results A total of 70 patients (64 SOT recipients and 6 HCT recipients) had infection with an endemic mycosis, including 52 with histoplasmosis, 9 with blastomycosis, and 9 with coccidioidomycosis. The 12âmonth cumulative incidence rate among SOT recipients for histoplasmosis was 0.102%. Occurrence of infection was bimodal; 28 (40%) infections occurred in the first 6Â months post transplantation, and 24 (34%) occurred between 2 and 11Â years post transplantation. Three patients were documented to have acquired infection from the donor organ. Seven SOT recipients with histoplasmosis and 3 with coccidioidomycosis died (16%); no HCT recipient died. Conclusions This 5âyear multicenter prospective surveillance study found that endemic mycoses occur uncommonly in SOT and HCT recipients, and that the period at risk extends for years after transplantation.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/106980/1/tid12186.pd
Can forest management based on natural disturbances maintain ecological resilience?
Given the increasingly global stresses on forests, many ecologists argue that managers must maintain ecological resilience: the capacity of ecosystems to absorb disturbances without undergoing fundamental change. In this review we ask: Can the emerging paradigm of natural-disturbance-based management (NDBM) maintain ecological resilience in managed forests? Applying resilience theory requires careful articulation of the ecosystem state under consideration, the disturbances and stresses that affect the persistence of possible alternative states, and the spatial and temporal scales of management relevance. Implementing NDBM while maintaining resilience means recognizing that (i) biodiversity is important for long-term ecosystem persistence, (ii) natural disturbances play a critical role as a generator of structural and compositional heterogeneity at multiple scales, and (iii) traditional management tends to produce forests more homogeneous than those disturbed naturally and increases the likelihood of unexpected catastrophic change by constraining variation of key environmental processes. NDBM may maintain resilience if silvicultural strategies retain the structures and processes that perpetuate desired states while reducing those that enhance resilience of undesirable states. Such strategies require an understanding of harvesting impacts on slow ecosystem processes, such as seed-bank or nutrient dynamics, which in the long term can lead to ecological surprises by altering the forest's capacity to reorganize after disturbance
Eureka and beyond: mining's impact on African urbanisation
This collection brings separate literatures on mining and urbanisation together at a time when both artisanal and large-scale mining are expanding in many African economies. While much has been written about contestation over land and mineral rights, the impact of mining on settlement, notably its catalytic and fluctuating effects on migration and urban growth, has been largely ignored. African nation-statesâ urbanisation trends have shown considerable variation over the past half century. The current surge in ânewâ mining countries and the slow-down in âoldâ mining countries are generating some remarkable settlement patterns and welfare outcomes. Presently, the African continent is a laboratory of national mining experiences. This special issue on African mining and urbanisation encompasses a wide cross-section of country case studies: beginning with the historical experiences of mining in Southern Africa (South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe), followed by more recent mineralizing trends in comparatively new mineral-producing countries (Tanzania) and an established West African gold producer (Ghana), before turning to the influence of conflict minerals (Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone)
