    The transportation depot: An orbiting vehicle support facility

    This paper describes the details of an effort to produce conceptual designs for an orbiting platform, called a transportation depot, to handle assembly and processing of lunar, Martian, and related vehicles. High-level requirements for such a facility were established, and several concepts were developed to meet those requirements. By showing that the critical rigid-body momentum characteristics of each concept are similar to those of the dual-keel space station, some insight was gained about the controllability and utility of this type of facility. Finally, several general observations were made that highlight the advantages and disadvantages of particular design features

    Historical background and design evolution of the transonic aircraft technology supercritical wing

    Two dimensional wind tunnel test results obtained for supercritical airfoils indicated that substantial improvements in aircraft performance at high subsonic speeds could be achieved by shaping the airfoil to improve the supercritical flow above the upper surface. Significant increases in the drag divergence Mach number, the maximum lift coefficient for buffer onset, and the Mach number for buffet onset at a given lift coefficient were demonstrated for the supercritical airfoil, as compared with a NACA 6 series airfoil of comparable thickness. These trends were corroborated by results from three dimensional wind tunnel and flight tests. Because these indicated extensions of the buffet boundaries could provide significant improvements in the maneuverability of a fighter airplane, an exploratory wind tunnel investigation was initiated which demonstrated that significant aerodynamic improvements could be achieved from the direct substitution of a supercritical airfoil on a variable wing sweep multimission airplane model

    Effects of Neighboring Nectar-Producing Plants on Populations of Pest Lepidoptera and Their Parasitoids in Broccoli Plantings

    Eggs and larvae of the imported cabbageworm, Pieris rapae, were much more abundant in broccoli interplanted with nectar-producing plants than in broccoli monoculture. More diamondback moth larvae, Plutella xylostella, occurred in broccoli interplanted with or adjacent to nectar-producing plants than in broccoli monoculture. Density of cabbage looper larvae, Trichoplusia ni, was similar among the three types of broccoli plantings. For Cotesia rubecula, established in Michigan after introduction from Yugoslavia, pupae were more numerous in broccoli interplanted with nectar-producing plants than in other plots. High parasitism rates of diamondback moth, mainly by Diadegma insulare, were observed in every plot, but there were no differences in parasitism of diamondback moth between the treatments. Results indicate that the interactions between pests, parasitoids and nectar-producing plants are complex and may be different for each species

    Relationship of First-Year University Grades of Non-High School Graduates with the Tests of General Educational Development

    The Tests of General Educational Development (GED) are used extensively in the United States and in all provinces and territories in Canada except Quebec, Ontario, and Alberta for high school equivalency certification. The five tests, which include English, Social Studies, Natural Sciences, Literature, and Mathematics, measure reading comprehension and general knowledge in the subjects rather than specific content of secondary school courses. Nevertheless, they tend to be good predictors of success in colleges and univer- sities. Where these institutions do not have an open admission policy, it is recommended that they determine relative cut-off points for admission to programs. Results of this study indicate that where such cut-off points have been established, they may be at an unnecessarily high level; also, that an open admission policy, especially if supported by remedial English and study skills courses, may be advisable.Les tests du Développement Général Educatif (DGE) sont utilisés de manière extensive aux Etats-Unis et dans toutes les provinces et territoires du Canada, excepté au Québec, en Ontario, et en Alberta, pour la certification d'équivalence en école secondaire. Les 5 tests, qui comprennent de l'anglais, des études sociales, des sciences naturelles, de la littérature et des mathématiques, évaluent une compréhension à la lecture et une culture générale dans les matières plutôt que le contenu spécifique aux cours d'école secondaire. Néanmoins, ils ont tendance a bien prédire l'éventuel succès dans les collèges et les univer-sités. Là où ces institutions ne stipulent pas d'admission ouverte, il est recommandé qu 'elles déterminent un numerus clausus relatif pour les admissions aux programmes. Les résultats de cette enquête montrent que là ou de tels numerus clausus ont été institués il se peut qu 'ils le soient à un niveau inutilement élevé; de même, qu 'une politique d'ad-mission ouverte, spécialement si elle est appuyée par de l'anglais de rattrapage et une étude de cours d'aptitudes, peut être conseillée

    Structural dynamic interaction with solar tracking control for evolutionary Space Station concepts

    The sun tracking control system design of the Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ) and the interaction of the control system with the flexible structure of Space Station Freedom (SSF) evolutionary concepts are addressed. The significant components of the space station pertaining to the SARJ control are described and the tracking control system design is presented. Finite element models representing two evolutionary concepts, enhanced operations capability (EOC) and extended operations capability (XOC), are employed to evaluate the influence of low frequency flexible structure on the control system design and performance. The design variables of the control system are synthesized using a constrained optimization technique to meet design requirements, to provide a given level of control system stability margin, and to achieve the most responsive tracking performance. The resulting SARJ control system design and performance of the EOC and XOC configurations are presented and compared to those of the SSF configuration. Performance limitations caused by the low frequency of the dominant flexible mode are discussed

    Women's experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period in the Gambia: A qualitative study

    Objective: In sub-Saharan African countries, there are unique cultural factors and adverse physical conditions that contribute to women's experiences of pregnancy and birth. The objective of this study was to qualitatively explore women's experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, the postnatal period, and maternal psychological distress in The Gambia. Design and methods: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 55 women who had given birth within the previous year. Results: Thematic analysis identified five themes: (1) transition to adulthood, (2) physical difficulties, (3) value of children in relation to others, (4) children as a strain, and (5) going through it alone. The results suggest that having a child is a defining point in women's lives associated with happiness and joy. However, women also described situations which could lead to unhappiness and distress in the perinatal period. A child conceived out of wedlock or a baby girl can be sources of distress because of negative cultural perceptions. The strain of having a child, particularly the additional financial burden, and minimal support from men were also a concern for women. Finally, women recognized the danger associated with delivery and expressed recurrent worries of complications during childbirth which could result in the death of them or the baby. Conclusions: Further research is needed to identify women vulnerable to psychological distress so that health services and target interventions can be developed accordingly

    Haze in the Klang Valley of Malaysia

    Continuous measurements of dry aerosol light scattering (Bsp) were made at two sites in the Klang Valley of Malaysia between December 1998 and December 2000. In addition 24-h PM2.5 samples were collected on a one-day-in-six cycle and the chemical composition of the aerosol was determined. Periods of excessive haze were defined as 24-h average Bsp values greater than 150 Mm-1 and these occurred on a number of occasions, between May and September 1999, during May 2000, and between July and September 2000. The evidence for smoke being a significant contributor to aerosol during periods of excessive haze is discussed and includes features of the aerosol chemistry, the diurnal cycle of Bsp, and the coincidence of forest fires on Sumatra during the southwest (SW) monsoon period, as well as transport modelling for one week of the southwest Monsoon of 2000. The study highlights that whilst transboundary smoke is a major contributor to poor visibility in the Klang Valley, smoke from fires on Peninsular Malaysia is also a contributor, and at all times, the domestic source of secondary particle production is present
