Simulated multi-tracer analyses with HI intensity mapping
We use full sky simulations, including the effects of foreground
contamination and removal, to explore multi-tracer synergies between a SKA-like
21cm intensity mapping survey and a LSST-like photometric galaxy redshift
survey. In particular we study ratios of auto and cross-correlations between
the two tracers as estimators of the ratio of their biases, a quantity that
should benefit considerably from the cosmic variance cancellation of the
multi-tracer approach. We show how well we should be able to measure the bias
ratio on very large scales (down to ), which is crucial to measure
primordial non-Gaussianity and general relativistic effects on large scale
structure. We find that, in the absence of foregrounds but with realistic noise
levels of such surveys, the multi-tracer estimators are able to improve on the
sensitivity of a cosmic-variance contaminated measurement by a factor of .
When foregrounds are included, estimators using the 21cm auto-correlation
become biased. However, we show that cross-correlation estimators are immune to
this and do not incur in any significant penalty in terms of sensitivity from
discarding the auto-correlation data. However, the loss of long-wavelength
radial modes caused by foreground removal in combination with the low redshift
resolution of photometric surveys, reduces the sensitivity of the multi-tracer
estimator, albeit still better than the cosmic variance contaminated scenario
even in the noise free case. Finally we explore different alternative avenues
to avoid this problem.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 1 tabl
Surgical Management of Cavernous Malformations Presenting with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy
Cerebral cavernous malformations (CMs) are dynamic lesions characterized by continuous size changes and repeated bleeding. When involving cortical tissue, CMs pose a significant risk for the development of drug-resistant epilepsy, which is thought to be result of an altered neuronal network caused by the lesion itself and its blood degradation products. Preoperative evaluation should comprise a complete seizure history, neurological examination, epilepsy-oriented MRI, EEG, video-EEG, completed with SPECT, PET, functional MRI, and/or invasive monitoring as needed. Radiosurgery shows variable rates of seizure freedom and a high incidence of complications, thus microsurgical resection remains the optimal treatment for CMs presenting with drug-resistant epilepsy. Two thirds of patients reach Engel I class at 3-year follow-up, regardless of lobar location. Those with secondarily generalized seizures, a higher seizure frequency, and generalized abnormalities on preoperative or postoperative EEG, show poorer outcomes, while factors such as gender, duration of epilepsy, lesion size, age, bleeding at the time of surgery, do not correlate consistently with seizure outcome. Electrocorticography and a meticulous removal of all cortical hemosiderin – beyond pure lesionectomy – reduce the risk of symptomatic recurrences
Keratinopidlic fungi in soils of Corrientes city (Argentina)
Most studies from Argentina have focused on toxocariasis as an environmental problem of big cities, and there are no available data about children infection from small or middle-sized cities. In order to assess the prevalence of anti-Toxocara antibodies in infantile population, 206 children from Resistencia, of both sexes, aged 1-14 years old were studied by Elisa testing with E/S T. canis L2 antigens. Hematological parameters and immunoglobulin levels were determined; five days' stool samples were studied and epidemiological data were obtained by means of a questionnaire to parents. Results showed that 73% of the children had one or more dogs living at home, 57% reported geophagia and 37.9% were positive for Toxocara serology, but there was no significant difference in prevalence neither for boys and girls, nor concerning age. An increased risk of infection was observed in age groups 5-6 and 7-8 for boys, and in age groups 3-4 and 5-6 for girls
Ultrathin DSAEK versus DMEK – Review of systematic reviews
The efficacy and safety of Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and ultrathin Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DSAEK) have been recently compared in several systematic reviews (SRs). The aim of this study was to assess the evidence quality of such SRs, in order to obtain a scientifically rigorous comparison between the two techniques. We performed a systematic review of SRs and meta-analyses comparing the efficacy and safety between UT-DSAEK and DMEK up to 24th March 2023, using 3 electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar) plus manual reference search. Specific outcomes analyzed included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), endothelial cell density (ECD), rebubbling rate, and other postoperative complications. Of 90 titles/abstracts screened, four SRs met the inclusion criteria. All SRs adequately analyzed potential bias of the included studies. One SR raised concern for potential literature search bias and two SRs have heterogeneity in some outcomes analyzed. All SRs found higher BCVA after DMEK, but one SR reported significant heterogeneity. All SRs found significant heterogeneity in ECD analysis, with one SR providing inconsistent analysis of this outcome. Three SRs analyzed rebubbling rates, favoring UT-DSAEK over DMEK. Three SRs concluded a higher overall complication rate after DMEK, although rebubbling may be a confounding factor. This systematic review clarifies the strengths and weaknesses of published SRs and reinforces the conclusion that DMEK leads to superior visual outcomes compared to UT-DSAEK, with the trade-off of higher rebubbling rates and possibly other postoperative complications. Studies with longer follow-up are needed to ascertain these differences between procedures.publishersversionpublishe
Capacity and coverage trade-off in WCDMA environments with repeaters deployment
radio planning, WCDMA, repeaters, capacity and coverageThis work derives the analytic expression of the feasibility condition for the uplink of a
WCDMA mobile communications system with repeaters deployment in a multiservice
environment with a general heterogeneous layout. In particular, a compact closed expression for
the admission region is presented, suitable for a system where the users belong to an arbitrary
number of different service classes. A tradeoff between capacity and coverage arises and it has
been analysed both theoretically and by means of simulations. Different parameters are shown to
have a major impact and their adjustment is discussed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Nomenclatural Type Identification of Names in North African Tamarix (Tamaricaceae)
Tamarix is native to Eurasia plus the northern and southern territories of Africa, with some species being introduced into America and Oceania. They are usually found in arid, desertic, or subdesertic areas, often on saline or subsaline soils, in Mediterranean, temperate, or subtropical climates. The genus is renowned for its complex taxonomy, which is usually based on rather variable or unstable characters, which leads to contrasting taxonomic treatments. As part of the taxonomic revision of Tamarix undertaken by the authors, ten names (i.e., T. africana, T. bounopoea, T. brachystylis var. fluminensis, T. malenconiana, T. muluyana, T. tenuifolia, T. tingitana, T. trabutii, T. valdesquamigera, and T. weyleri) published from material collected in the southwestern parts of the Mediterranean basin are taxonomically and nomenclaturally discussed after analysing their original material. Eight intended holotypes are corrected here to lectotypes; one epitype is designated for T. africana to warrant current use of the name; and one isotype, 30 isolectotypes, and 11 syntypes are also identified for the studied names. Further, the taxonomic identity of all names and their eventual synonymic placement are accordingly discussed. This work was partly supported by the European Commission through the H2020 Research and Innovation Staff Exchange Programme, project 645636: ‘Insect-plant relationships: insights into biodiversity and new applications’ (FlyHigh); and by the grants UAUSTI19−08, UAUSTI21−04, UAUSTI22−05, UADIF21−29, UADIF22−28, VIGROB21−166, VIGROB22−166, ACIE18−03, ACIE21−01, and ACIE22−01, from diverse programmes of Universidad de Alicante
