Isaiah 40:1-2 - Pure gospel! This article endeavours to analize Isaiah 40:1-2 in such a way that ministers who are experiencing difficulties in preaching the Old Testament might find in it some guidelines on a workable way in which sections of the Old Testament could be analized with the purpose of making a sermon about it. The method employed consists of four steps, namely a general orientation, a synchronic analysis, a diachronic analysis and a reception-critical analysis. The results show that Isaiah 40:1-2 is pure gospel! It speaks in no way less than the New Testament about God’s redemption of the sinner through his grace alone

Jeremia 7 :1 -1 5 is a judgment prophecy in the style of a court verdict. Each of the five subdivisions is functional: The introduction underlines the divine authority of the judgment; the part between the introduction and the charge states the 'Law' by which the nation's transgressions would be tried; the charge stipulates the nature and gravity of the transgressions; the part between the charge and the sentence quotes a previous 'case' and the sentence stipulates that the punishment will be the same as the punishment executed against Shilo: the temple will be destroyed, and the inhabitants of Judah will be rejected

The function of the tradition of creation in JeremiahThe purpose of this article is, firstly, to summarise Da Silva’s doctoral thesis, entitled. The function of the tradition of creation in Jeremiah’ and, secondly, to discuss the relevance of the conclusions reached in it. His examination of twelve pericopes from Jeremiah, referring to Israel’s tradition of creation, results in six conclusions. The issues on which they bear relevance are theology in general, the Christian’s faith, and the Christian’s testimony towards non-christians and regarding the ecological movement

Slurry Acidification as a Solution to Minimize Ammonia Emissions from the Combined Application of Animal Manure and Synthetic Fertilizer in No-Tillage

The combined application of manure/slurry and synthetic fertilizer (SF) might be a solution to decrease transport and application costs involving those by-products as well as enable access to them in regions where availability is low. Moreover, their joint application can potentially reduce environmental pollution, enlarge the manure benefits to more areas, and enhance the SF efficiency. However, such a strategy might result in increased ammonia emissions when applied to crop residues. Two experiments were implemented to assess ammonia emissions from stubble-covered soil fertilized with manure amended with SF. In Experiment 1 (E1), urea (U) and calcium ammonium nitrate (AN) were applied combined with dairy manure (MAN). In Experiment 2 (E2), urea was combined with acidified pig slurry (APS) and applied just after sowing (T0) or eight days later (T8). The combinations U + MAN and AN + MAN increased the ammonia emissions, while APS decreased the emissions from U, in APS + U combination, by more than 75%. Therefore, manure combined with SF applied on stubble-covered soil should not be recommended. T8 reduced ammonia emissions from U. APS enhanced the efficiency of U, being then an interesting strategy to mitigate ammonia emissions when applied on stubble-covered soil, as in no-tillageinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sustained gene expression in the retina by improved episomal vectors

Gene and cellular therapies are nowadays part of therapeutic strategies for the treatment of diverse pathologies. The drawbacks associated with gene therapy-low levels of transgene expression, vector loss during mitosis, and gene silencing-need to be addressed. The pEPI-1 and pEPito family of vectors was developed to overcome these limitations. It contains a scaffold/matrix attachment region, which anchors its replication to cell division in eukaryotic cells while in an extrachromosomal state and is less prone to silencing, due to a lower number of CpG motifs. Recent success showed that ocular gene therapy is an important tool for the treatment of several diseases, pending the overcome of the aforementioned limitations. To achieve sustained gene delivery in the retina, we evaluated several vectors based on pEPito and pEPI-1 for their ability to sustain transgene expression in retinal cells. These vectors stably transfected and replicated in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Expression levels were promoter dependent with constitutive promoters cytomegalovirus immediate early promoter (CMV) and human CMV enhancer/human elongation factor 1 alpha promoter yielding the highest levels of transgene expression compared with the retina-specific RPE65 promoter. When injected in C57Bl6 mice, transgene expression was sustained for at least 32 days. Furthermore, the retina-specific RPE65 promoter showed higher efficiency in vivo compared to in vitro. In this study, we demonstrate that by combining tissue-specific promoters with a mitotic stable system, less susceptible to epigenetic silencing such as pEPito-based plasmids, we can achieve prolonged gene expression and a sustained therapeutic effect.Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia, Portugal [PEst/OE/EQB-LA 0023/2013, SFRH/BD/76873/2011, SFRH/BD/70318/2010, PTDC/SAU/BEB/098475/2008]; European Union [PIRG-GA-2009-249314

Pareto's Law of Income Distribution: Evidence for Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States

We analyze three sets of income data: the US Panel Study of Income Dynamics PSID), the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS), and the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). It is shown that the empirical income distribution is consistent with a two-parameter lognormal function for the low-middle income group (97%-99% of the population), and with a Pareto or power law function for the high income group (1%-3% of the population). This mixture of two qualitatively different analytical distributions seems stable over the years covered by our data sets, although their parameters significantly change in time. It is also found that the probability density of income growth rates almost has the form of an exponential function.Comment: Latex2e v1.6; 16 pages with 5 figure

The present work describes a co-rotating shear flexible beam element without shear locking and integrating Euler-Bernoullis and Timoshenkos beam theories. The co-rotational kinematics is based on the separation of the motion in deformational and rigid body components. The deformation of the beam element is composed by three natural modes of deformation: the extension mode, the symmetric bending mode, and the anti-symmetric bending mode. The respective generalized stresses from these natural modes are self-balanced allowing the achievement of a consistent tangent stiffness matrix. In this paper, it is detailed and deduced all the algebraic steps for the deduction of the elastic stiffness matrix, the geometric stiffness matrix, and the co-rotation stiffness matrix. Some examples are presented and the numerical results demonstrate that the beam element here presented is able to handle large rotations.Peer Reviewe

Kinetic parameters estimation using the Paired Equivalent Isothermal Exposures (PEIE) Method under non-isothermal heating conditions

    Get PDF
With the purpose of testing the recently developed Paired Equivalent Isothermal Exposures (PETE) method, to determine reaction kinetic parameters under nonisothermal conditions, continuous pasteurizations were carried out with a nectar of a tropical fruit [25% of Cupuacu (Theobroma grandiflorum) pulp and 15% of sugar] in order to estimate the ascorbic acid thermal degradation kinetic parameters. The experimental ascorbic acid thermal degradation activation energy (96±13kJ/mol) estimated by the PETE, compared well with the previously determined value (74±5kJ/mol) for the same product under isothermal conditions. The PETE method is a reliable, easy and faster method to estimate first order reactions activation energy

Online delivery and assessment during COVID-19: safeguarding academic integrity

    Get PDF
Globally, the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise daily despite strict measures being adopted by many countries. Consequently, universities closed down to minimise the face-to-face contacts, and the majority of the universities are now conducting degree programmes through online delivery. Remote online delivery and assessment are novel experiences for many universities, which presents many challenges, particularly when safeguarding academic integrity. For example, invigilated assessments, often considered as more secure, are not an option given the current situation and detecting any cheating would be significantly challenging. This paper reviews assessment security in the digital domain and critically evaluates the practices from different universities in safeguarding academic integrity, including associated challenges

Glyphosate translocation in herbicide tolerant plants

The objective of this study was to evaluate glyphosate translocation in glyphosate-tolerant weed species (I. nil, T. procumbens and S. latifolia) compared to glyphosate-susceptible species (B. pilosa). The evaluations of 14C-glyphosate absorption and translocation were performed at 6, 12, 36 and 72 hours after treatment (HAT) in I. nil and B. pilosa, and only at 72 HAT in the species T. procumbens and S. latifolia. The plants were collected and fractionated into application leaf, other leaves, stems, and roots. In S. latifolia, approximately 88% of the glyphosate remained in the application leaf and a small amount was translocated to roots at 72 HAT. However, 75% of the herbicide applied on T. procumbens remained in the leaf that had received the treatment, with greater glyphosate translocation to the floral bud. It was concluded that the smaller amount of glyphosate observed in S. latifolia and T. procumbens may partly account for their higher tolerance to glyphosate. However, I. nil tolerance to glyphosate may be associated with other factors such as metabolization, root exudation or compartmentalization, because a large amount of the herbicide reached the roots of this species.
