    Sustainability performance measurement : a preliminary classification framework of models and indicators

    In this position paper we focus on the diversity of sustainability measurements. Based on existing research on performance measurement, we propose a preliminary classification framework summarizing sustainability models and indicators. By describing illustrative examples, we claim that several models and indicators can be distinguished with their own peculiarities. Having such a framework is interesting for both academia and business to structure the range of models and indicators and to ultimately select the appropriate sustainability measurement approach. The proposed framework should be validated by further research

    The impact of COVID-19 on the cancer care of adolescents and young adults and their well-being:Results from an online survey conducted in the early stages of the pandemic

    Background: Because of the global spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), oncology departments across the world have rapidly adapted their cancer care protocols to balance the risk of delaying cancer treatments and the risk of COVID-19 exposure. COVID-19 and associated changes may have an impact on the psychosocial functioning of patients with cancer and survivors. This study was designed to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young people living with and beyond cancer. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 177 individuals, aged 18 to 39 years, were surveyed about the impact of COVID-19 on their cancer care and psychological well-being. Participants also reported their information needs with respect to COVID-19. Responses were summarized with a content analysis approach. Results: This was the first study to examine the psychological functioning of young patients and survivors during the first weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic. A third of the respondents reported increased levels of psychological distress, and as many as 60% reported feeling more anxious than they did before COVID-19. More than half also wanted more information tailored to them as young patients with cancer. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly evolving and changing the landscape of cancer care. Young people living with cancer are a unique population and might be more vulnerable during this time in comparison with their healthy peers. There is a need to screen for psychological distress and attend to young people whose cancer care has been delayed. As the lockdown begins to ease, the guidelines about cancer care should be updated according to this population's needs.</p

    The impact of fruit temperature dynamics on heat stress tolerance of selected oil pumpkin genotypes

    Fruit temperature is a key parameter for fruit growth and quality which is affected by climate, plant vigorousity, solar exposure and fruit thermal properties. In the present study, the variability in temperature dynamics of Styrian oil pumpkin fruits and selected interspecific hybrids involving Cucurbita argyrosperma, C. moschata, C. pepo was analysed in two different periods of hot weather. The temperatures were measured with thermistors on (a) attached fruits, (b) detached fruits exposed to the sun and (c) artificially black coloured fruits. The highest average temperatures were determined in the Styrian oil pumpkin, whereas the lowest temperatures were determined in genotypes with lighter fruit exteriors suggesting that those are less sensitive to heat stress conditions and may represent a good option for the improvements of adaptability to climatic changes. In order to combine lighter and harder pericarp, the most promising genotypes were crossed with wild Cucurbita okeechobeensis.     Bicyclic Boronates as Potent Inhibitors of AmpC, the Class C β-Lactamase from Escherichia coli

    Resistance to β-lactam antibacterials, importantly via production of β-lactamases, threatens their widespread use. Bicyclic boronates show promise as clinically useful, dual-action inhibitors of both serine- (SBL) and metallo- (MBL) β-lactamases. In combination with cefepime, the bicyclic boronate taniborbactam is in phase 3 clinical trials for treatment of complicated urinary tract infections. We report kinetic and crystallographic studies on the inhibition of AmpC, the class C β-lactamase from Escherichia coli, by bicyclic boronates, including taniborbactam, with different C-3 side chains. The combined studies reveal that an acylamino side chain is not essential for potent AmpC inhibition by active site binding bicyclic boronates. The tricyclic form of taniborbactam was observed bound to the surface of crystalline AmpC, but not at the active site, where the bicyclic form was observed. Structural comparisons reveal insights into why active site binding of a tricyclic form has been observed with the NDM-1 MBL, but not with other studied β-lactamases. Together with reported studies on the structural basis of inhibition of class A, B and D β-lactamases, our data support the proposal that bicyclic boronates are broad-spectrum β-lactamase inhibitors that work by mimicking a high energy ‘tetrahedral’ intermediate. These results suggest further SAR guided development could improve the breadth of clinically useful β-lactamase inhibition

    Metal-organic framework crystal-glass composites.

    The majority of research into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) focuses on their crystalline nature. Recent research has revealed solid-liquid transitions within the family, which we use here to create a class of functional, stable and porous composite materials. Described herein is the design, synthesis, and characterisation of MOF crystal-glass composites, formed by dispersing crystalline MOFs within a MOF-glass matrix. The coordinative bonding and chemical structure of a MIL-53 crystalline phase are preserved within the ZIF-62 glass matrix. Whilst separated phases, the interfacial interactions between the closely contacted microdomains improve the mechanical properties of the composite glass. More significantly, the high temperature open pore phase of MIL-53, which spontaneously transforms to a narrow pore upon cooling in the presence of water, is stabilised at room temperature in the crystal-glass composite. This leads to a significant improvement of CO2 adsorption capacity

    Exploring the interactions of irbesartan and irbesartan–2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin complex with model membranes

    The interactions of irbesartan (IRB) and irbesartan–2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) complex with Dipalmitoyl Phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers have been explored utilizing an array of biophysical techniques ranging from Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Small angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), ESI Mass-Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (ssNMR). Molecular Dynamics (MD) calculations have been also conducted to complement the experimental results. Irbesartan was found to be embedded in the lipid membrane core and to affect the phase transition properties of the DPPC bilayers. SAXS studies revealed that irbesartan alone does not display perfect solvation since some coexisting irbesartan crystallites are present. In its complexed form IRB gets fully solvated in the membranes showing that encapsulation of IRB in HP-β-CD may have beneficial effects in the ADME properties of this drug. MD experiments revealed the topological and orientational integration of irbesartan into the phospholipid bilayer being placed at about 1 nm from the membrane centre

    Metal-organic framework glasses with permanent accessible porosity.

    To date, only several microporous, and even fewer nanoporous, glasses have been produced, always via post synthesis acid treatment of phase separated dense materials, e.g. Vycor glass. In contrast, high internal surface areas are readily achieved in crystalline materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). It has recently been discovered that a new family of melt quenched glasses can be produced from MOFs, though they have thus far lacked the accessible and intrinsic porosity of their crystalline precursors. Here, we report the first glasses that are permanently and reversibly porous toward incoming gases, without post-synthetic treatment. We characterize the structure of these glasses using a range of experimental techniques, and demonstrate pores in the range of 4 - 8 Å. The discovery of MOF glasses with permanent accessible porosity reveals a new category of porous glass materials that are elevated beyond conventional inorganic and organic porous glasses by their diversity and tunability

    Remanufacturing as a means for achieving low-carbon SMEs in Indonesia

    Remanufacturing can reduce the energy intensity and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions significantly and increase the eco-efficiency of product systems by utilizing recovered end-of-life parts. This paper presents the GHG mitigation potential of technically feasible remanufactured alternators in Indonesian small- and medium-sized enterprizes. Life cycle assessment approach and Weibull ++8 software have been used to calculate environmental and quality parameters. Since existing remanufactured alternators have not been found to meet the technical criterion for customers’ satisfaction, a number of alternative remanufacturing strategies have been explored to identify an option that has not only reduced GHG emissions but also has satisfied reliability, durability and warranty period criterion. Three improvement scenarios involving three different remanufacturing strategies were investigated in this case study, and yielded useful insights in order to come up with a technically feasible remanufacturing strategy for reducing a significant amount of GHG emissions. The improvement scenario III, which maximizes the use of used components, was found to offer technically and environmentally feasible remanufacturing solutions. Overall, this research has found that about 7207 t of CO2 -eq GHG emissions and 111.7 TJ embodied energy consumption could potentially be avoided if 10 % of alternators in Indonesian automobile sector are remanufactured using technically feasible remanufacturing strategy
