Taiwanese Folk Tradition of Animal Sacrifice －Focusing on Pigs－

祭祀は、人類社会にとって、一般的な文化現象であり、古典的な課題である。本論で取り上げる供物は、これまで多方面にわたり研究されてきた。動物を供物とすることは、動物供犠と呼ばれる。この供物には、「殺生」という観念から罪悪感が伴ってきた。「供犠」と似た言葉には「供養」がある。供犠には動物だけでなく、人を差し出す人身供犠も歴史上ではみられた。農耕文明の発展に伴い、豚という動物への認識も変化してきた。豚に関する研究では「豚神」、「神豚」に関するものや、豚という漢字の「家」「冢」という要素に注目し、そこから豚の象徴的意味を探る研究などがある。豚の漢字の「家」「冢」に注目する研究は、「生」と「死」に関わってくるものである。一方、「豚神」に関する研究は、豚神への崇拝と恐怖を対象としている。豚に対する感情は、民族によって異なるものがある。さらに「神豚」に関する研究は、供物という視点からなされたものが多い。本論では、台湾特有の神豬比賽( 神豚試合) を取り上げた。神豚試合とは巨大に太らせた豚を解体し展示するもので、その重さや姿を競い合う伝統的な祭りである。この神豬比賽(神豚試合) に関する研究は少ない。さらに、これを動物供犠という視点で行った研究や、民俗事例として扱った研究や報告はほとんどみられない。本論では、当該地域における動物供犠という習俗の対象や、その背景を明らかにする。具体的事例として、玉元宮の中元普渡と三峽祖師の誕生日に行われた神豬比賽(神豚試合) を取り上げた。Festivals are a common cultural phenomenon and a classic topic of study in human societies. The religious offerings this paper discusses have been studied in numerous contexts. The practice of using animals as an offering, or animal sacrifice, is often accompanied by a sense of guilt as it involves the killing of animals. Similar to the word “kugi ,” or sacrificial ritual, is the Japanese “kuyo” , which means “making an offering.” In the past, some cultures made human sacrifices with human beings offered up as the object of sacrifice instead of animals. With the development of agricultural civilizations, people’s perceptions of pigs underwent various changes. Some notable studies on pigs include research on pig gods or holy pigs, as well as a study that focuses on the kanji for pig, “tun” and explores the symbolic meaning of hogs through analyzing the elements comprising this kanji, namely “jia” and “zhong.” The study of the kanji for pig discusses life and death, while the research on pig gods probes how they are worshipped and feared. People’s views on pigs differ from culture to culture. Many of the holy pig studies examine pigs as a sacrificial offering. The topic of this paper is the unique Taiwanese tradition of the Pig God competition. This is a long-standing festival in which fattened pigs are judged on their weight and appearance, and later dismembered and displayed. Few studies on the Pig God competition exist, and research focusing on the aspect of animal sacrifice or studies that regard the event as an example of folk tradition are rare. This paper aims to shed light on the subjects and background of animal sacrifice practices in Taiwan. As a case study, the paper discusses the Pig God contests held at yuyuangong temple during Ghost Month and the contest held on the birthday of the Buddhist monk Master Qingshui.論
