Gravitational wave spectral synthesis
We study the LISA sources that arise from isolated binary evolution, and how
these depend on age and metallicity, using model stellar populations from
BPASS. We calculate the combined GW spectrum of all the binaries within these
populations, including all types of compact binaries as well as those with
living stars, and use these results to investigate the detectability of star
clusters with LISA. We find at late times the dominant sources are WD-WD
binaries, but at times before approx. years we find a significant
population of NS-WD and BH-WD binaries, which is related to the treatment of
mass transfer and common envelope events in BPASS, wherein mass transfer is
relatively likely to be stable. Metallicity also has an effect on the GW
spectrum and on the relative dominance of different types of binaries. Our
results suggest that nearby star clusters might produce GWs detectable by LISA
or future missions throughout most of their evolution.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. Submitted to MNRA
Fire, climate and the origins of agriculture: micro-charcoal records of biomass burning during the Last Glacial Interglacial Transition in Southwest Asia
This study investigates changes in climate, vegetation, wildfire and human activity in
Southwest Asia during the transition to Neolithic agriculture between ca. 16 and ca. 9 ka. In order to
trace the fire history of this region, we use microscopic charcoal from lake sediment sequences, and
present two new records: one from south central Turkey (Akgo¨ l) and the other from the southern Levant
(Hula). These are interpreted primarily as the result of regional-scale fire events, with the exception of a
single large event ca. 13 ka at Akgo¨ l, which phytolith analysis shows was the result of burning of the
local marsh vegetation. Comparison between these and other regional micro-charcoal, stable isotope
and pollen records shows that wildfires were least frequent when the climate was cold and dry (glacial,
Lateglacial Stadial) and the vegetation dominated by chenopod–Artemisia steppe, and that they
became more frequent and/or bigger at times of warmer, wetter but seasonally dry climate (Lateglacial
Interstadial, early Holocene). Warmer and wetter climates caused an increase in biomass availability,
with woody matter appearing to provide the main fuel source in sites from the Levant, while grass fires
predominated in the interior uplands of Anatolia. Southwest Asia’s grasslands reached their greatest
extent during the early Holocene, and they were maintained by dry-season burning that helped to
delay the spread of woodland by up to 3 ka, at the same time as Neolithic settlement became
established across this grass parkland landscape. Although climatic changes appear to have acted as
the principal ‘pacemaker’ for fire activity through the last glacial–interglacial climatic transition (LGIT),
human actions may have amplified shifts in biomass burning. Fire regimes therefore changed markedly
during this time period, and both influenced, and were influenced by, the cultural-economic transition
from hunter-foraging to agriculture and village lif
Pegamento De Enxertos De Tomateiro Em Diferentes Solanáceas
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)This paper aimed to assess tomato grafting on different solanaceous species through two grafting methods. Scions were cut from cultivar Santa Cruz Kada seedlings. A fully randomized experimental design was carried out with treatments in a 9 x 2 factorial scheme. As rootstocks, four accessions of mini-tomatoes (0224-53, RVTC 57, RVTC 20 and 6889-50 Solanum lycopersicum L); two species of wild tomato (Solanum habrochaites var hirsutum ‘PI-127826’ and Solanum pennellii ‘LA716’); other two tomato species [Solanum, cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum) and physalis (Physalis peruviana)] and a control with cultivar Santa Cruz Kada (auto-graft) rootstocks were used. In addition, two grafting methods were evaluated full cleft and approach graft. Fifteen days after grafting, plants were assessed for graft-take percentage; root length; plant height; leaf number; foliar area; root, stem and leaf dry matter; and ratio between shoot and root dry matter. Based on the results, we may state rootstock and grafting interaction had effect on both graft-take rate and plant development. Overall, the studied plants should be recommended as rootstock, except for 6889-50 mini-tomato (S. lycopersicum L.) and S. pennellii. Full cleft grafting was most suitable for cocona and physalis, while the approach method showed better results for the mini-tomato accessions 0224-53, RVTC 57 and RVTC 20, as well as for S. habrochaites. © 2016, Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Arid.
maneira são realizadas as técnicas e as relações sociais na produção de alimentos domésticos;
autossustento
