A Lazy Approach for Supporting Nested Transactions

    Get PDF
Transactional memory (TM) is a compelling alternative to traditional synchronization, and implementing TM primitives directly in hardware offers a potential performance advantage over software-based methods. In this paper, we demonstrate that many of the actions associated with transaction abort and commit may be performed lazily -- that is, incrementally, and on demand. This technique is ideal for hardware, since it requires little space or work; in addition, it can improve performance by sparing accesses to committing or aborting locations from having to stall until the commit or abort completes. We further show that our lazy abort and commit technique supports open nesting and orElse, two language-level proposals which rely on transactional nesting. We also provide design notes for supporting lazy abort and commit on our own hardware TM system, based on VTM

Initial simulation study on high-precision radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum with SKA1-low

As LOFAR has shown, using a dense array of radio antennas for detecting extensive air showers initiated by cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere makes it possible to measure the depth of shower maximum for individual showers with a statistical uncertainty less than 20g/cm220\,g/cm^2. This allows detailed studies of the mass composition in the energy region around 1017eV10^{17}\,eV where the transition from a Galactic to an Extragalactic origin could occur. Since SKA1-low will provide a much denser and very homogeneous antenna array with a large bandwidth of 50350MHz50-350\,MHz it is expected to reach an uncertainty on the XmaxX_{\max} reconstruction of less than 10g/cm210\,g/cm^2. We present first results of a simulation study with focus on the potential to reconstruct the depth of shower maximum for individual showers to be measured with SKA1-low. In addition, possible influences of various parameters such as the numbers of antennas included in the analysis or the considered frequency bandwidth will be discussed.Comment: To appear as part of the proceedings of the ARENA2016 meeting (Groningen, The Netherlands), published by EPJ-Wo

Computer program to simulate Raman scattering

    Get PDF
A computer program is described for simulating the vibration-rotation and pure rotational spectrum of a combustion system consisting of various diatomic molecules and CO2 as a function of temperature and number density. Two kinds of spectra are generated: a pure rotational spectrum for any mixture of diatomic and linear triatomic molecules, and a vibrational spectrum for diatomic molecules. The program is designed to accept independent rotational and vibrational temperatures for each molecule, as well as number densities

Front-to-End Bidirectional Heuristic Search with Near-Optimal Node Expansions

It is well-known that any admissible unidirectional heuristic search algorithm must expand all states whose ff-value is smaller than the optimal solution cost when using a consistent heuristic. Such states are called "surely expanded" (s.e.). A recent study characterized s.e. pairs of states for bidirectional search with consistent heuristics: if a pair of states is s.e. then at least one of the two states must be expanded. This paper derives a lower bound, VC, on the minimum number of expansions required to cover all s.e. pairs, and present a new admissible front-to-end bidirectional heuristic search algorithm, Near-Optimal Bidirectional Search (NBS), that is guaranteed to do no more than 2VC expansions. We further prove that no admissible front-to-end algorithm has a worst case better than 2VC. Experimental results show that NBS competes with or outperforms existing bidirectional search algorithms, and often outperforms A* as well.Comment: Accepted to IJCAI 2017. Credibilidad en realidad virtual: una propuesta para estudiar la comunicación de marca en metaversos

    Get PDF
The article presents a theoretical and empirical exercise to the possibilities of brand communication in virtual reality (VR), proposing an analysis/creation tool for emerging metaverse platforms, applied to the field of brand communication (immersive and 360-degree images, multisensoriality, first person perspective). Methodologically, this study uses an empirical approach, qualitatively evaluating an advertising piece in VR and highlighting the dimensions of believability that, in some way, affect brand communication. Results show three relevant dimensions: realism, interactivity, and engagement with the plot. Frontal White Matter Volume Is Associated with Brain Enlargement and Higher Structural Connectivity in Anthropoid Primates

Previous research has indicated the importance of the frontal lobe and its ‘executive’ connections to other brain structures as crucial in explaining primate neocortical adaptations. However, a representative sample of volumetric measurements of frontal connective tissue (white matter) has not been available. In this study, we present new volumetric measurements of white and grey matter in the frontal and non-frontal neocortical lobes from 18 anthropoid species. We analyze this data in the context of existing theories of neocortex, frontal lobe and white versus grey matter hyperscaling. Results indicate that the ‘universal scaling law’ of neocortical white to grey matter applies separately for frontal and non-frontal lobes; that hyperscaling of both neocortex and frontal lobe to rest of brain is mainly due to frontal white matter; and that changes in frontal (but not non-frontal) white matter volume are associated with changes in rest of brain and basal ganglia, a group of subcortical nuclei functionally linked to ‘executive control’. Results suggest a central role for frontal white matter in explaining neocortex and frontal lobe hyperscaling, brain size variation and higher neural structural connectivity in anthropoids
