Field-Induced Staggered Magnetic Order in La(2)NiO(4.133)
At low temperature the holes doped into the NiO(2) planes of La(2)NiO(4.133)
by the excess oxygen collect in diagonal stripes that separate narrow
antiferromagnetic domains. The magnetic order drops abruptly to zero at T_m =
110.5 K, but charge order remains with a period of 3a/2. We show that
application of a magnetic field in the regime T > T_m induces staggered
magnetic order of period 3a due to the net magnetic moment of the
high-temperature bond-centered stripes, together with the odd number of Ni
spins across an antiferromagnetic domain.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, 4 epsf figs included with psfig

Nonlinear Torsional Wave Beams
An evolution equation with cubic nonlinearity is presented for a torsional wave beam in an isotropic elastic solid. Analytical solutions are presented for the fundamental and third harmonic in the far field of a uniform circular source. Numerical results are presented for harmonic beam patterns at an intermediate distance between the near and far fields, and for a torsional waveform with shocks.Applied Research Laboratorie
Orbital polaron lattice formation in lightly doped La1-xSrxMnO3
By resonant x-ray scattering at the Mn K-edge on La7/8Sr1/8MnO3, we show that
an orbital polaron lattice (OPL) develops at the metal-insulator transition of
this compound. This orbital reordering explains consistently the unexpected
coexistence of ferromagnetic and insulating properties at low temperatures, the
quadrupling of the lattice structure parallel to the MnO2-planes, and the
observed polarization and azimuthal dependencies. The OPL is a clear
manifestation of strong orbital-hole interactions, which play a crucial role
for the colossal magnetoresistance effect and the doped manganites in general
Women often work in the service sector, in jobs that often pay less than in other sectors. This
proves to be true in health professions, especially in nursing, where women account for a vast
majority of staff. The field is characterized by demanding working conditions, for example understaffing, low wages, and difficulties regarding the reconciliation of work and private life. In many cases, women also do most unpaid care work in addition to their professional employment. The contribution shows how better working conditions in health professions would simultaneously improve the living conditions of women. Indubitably, care policy is gender policy; Policy makers need to improve and expand professional nursing and caregiving services; Professional care is of fundamental importance for society. Policy makers need to recognise this fact through proper remuneration and by relieving the burden on staff by ensuring better working conditions

Abating low-frequency noise using encapsulated gas bubbles
Air bubbles may be used to reduce radiated underwater noise. Two modalities of sound attenuation by air bubbles were shown to provide a reduction in radiated sound: bubble acoustic resonance damping and acoustic impedance mismatching. The bubbles used for acoustic resonance damping were manifested using gas-filled containers coupled to a support, and the acoustic impedance mismatching bubbles were created using a cloud of freely-rising bubbles, which were both used to surround an underwater sound source.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
A calibrated diversity assay for nucleic acid libraries using DiStRO—a Diversity Standard of Random Oligonucleotides
We have determined diversities exceeding 1012 different sequences in an annealing and melting assay using synthetic randomized oligonucleotides as a standard. For such high diversities, the annealing kinetics differ from those observed for low diversities, favouring the remelting curve after annealing as the best indicator of complexity. Direct comparisons of nucleic acid pools obtained from an aptamer selection demonstrate that even highly complex populations can be evaluated by using DiStRO, without the need of complicated calculations
Charge and spin ordering in Nd{1/3}Sr{2/3}FeO{3}
We have investigated the charge and spin ordering in Nd{1/3}Sr{2/3}FeO{3}
with neutron diffraction technique. This sample undergoes a charge ordering
transition accompanying charge disproportionation of 2Fe4+ -> Fe3+ + Fe5+. We
measured the superlattice reflections due to the charge and spin ordering, and
confirmed that charges and spins order simultaneously at Tco = 185 K. The
ordering pattern of charges and spins in this sample can be viewed as three
dimensional stripe order, and is compared with two dimensional stripe order
observed in other transition metal oxides.Comment: REVTeX, 4 pages, 3 figures, to be published in J. Phys. Chem. Solid
