The Effect of Sprint Interval Training and Intermittent Fasting on Cognitive Function

    Get PDF
This study will explore how a combination of a time-restricted eating (TRE) strategy and a sprint interval training (SIT) exercise program will affect cognitive function. Both TRE and SIT are easily implemented lifestyle habits that have been shown to present significant brain challenges. Participants will be randomized into 3 groups: either SIT + TRE (Group 1), SIT alone (Group 2), or TRE alone (Group 3). We will assess acute effects (single day of TRE, followed by a single session of SIT the next day), and the effects over a 6 week period. The SIT protocol consists of four 30 second sprinting bouts, separated by 2 minutes of recovery. An additional sprint bout will be added biweekly to maintain progressive overload. SIT will be performed 3 times a week for Groups 1 and 2. The TRE involves no restrictions on type or amount of food consumed, however food must be consumed between 12pm and 8pm. The SIT will occur in an unfed state towards the end of the fast. The study will involve sedentary people aged 18-39. To evaluate the intervention, 2 cognitive tests (Stroop and Corsi block) will be performed at baseline and biweekly over a 6 week period. Additionally, body composition testing will occur at baseline, week 3, and week 6 using a BodPod, if COVID rules allow (if not, bodyweight will be evaluated). We hypothesize that the combination treatment group will have greater improvements in their cognitive function and body composition compared to either intervention alone

A hybrid simulation approach for microtunneling construction planning

    Get PDF
Purpose: Construction planning for microtunneling projects is a complex process due to the high level of uncertainties inherent in underground construction and the interdependent nature of decision variables. Simulation is a suitable decision-making tool to account for uncertainties and to model complex dependencies among decision variables. This paper aims to improve microtunneling construction planning by using simulation. Design/methodology/approach: This study proposes a hybrid simulation approach that combines discrete event simulation (DES) with continuous simulation (CS) for microtunneling construction planning. In this approach, DES is used to model construction processes at the activity level and CS is used to model the continuous flow of soil material in the system. Findings: To demonstrate the capability of the proposed approach in construction planning of microtunneling projects, different construction plan scenarios are compared in a microtunneling case study. The results of the case study show suitability of the hybrid DES-CS approach in simulating microtunneling construction processes and the practicality of the approach for identifying the most efficient construction plan. Originality/value: This study proposes a new modeling approach for microtunneling construction processes using hybrid simulation and provides decision support at the construction planning stage of projects

Morphological changes and segregation of β-Al9Fe2Si2 phase: A perspective from better recyclability of cast Al-Si alloys

    Get PDF
High iron impurity has detrimental effects on the castability and tensile properties of recycled aluminium alloys. The present study reports the engineering of intermetallic β-phase present in hypoeutectic cast Al-Si model alloy systems with high Fe content (2 wt% Fe) in order to demonstrate the promising recyclability despite having high Fe content. Thermodynamic interplay between Si and Fe concentration on the formation of the β-phase and the solidification behaviour of the hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys has been explored. It has been demonstrated that with suitable heat treatment it is possible to alter the morphology of the β-phase and based on the experimental evidences, for the first time, the mechanism behind the solid-state morphological changes of beta phase has been proposed. Based on the experimental results and thermodynamic calculations it has been suggested that elimination of beta phase by gravitational segregation is more suitable for the near-eutectic 10 wt% Si alloy; whereas for 6 wt% Si alloy, morphological change of β-phase is recommended. It was also found that morphological change of beta-phase and Si could help recover the strength and ductility in the recycled Al-Si alloys having high Fe content. The aegis of Marie Sklodowska Curie Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF-2015), European Commission (EU project no. 656943)

A distributed simulation methodological framework for OR/MS applications

Distributed Simulation (DS) allows existing models to be composed together to form sim- ulations of large-scale systems, or large models to be divided into models that execute on separate computers. Among its claimed benefits are model reuse, speedup, data pri- vacy and data consistency. DS is arguably widely used in the defence sector. However, it is rarely used in Operations Research and Management Science (OR/MS) applications in areas such as manufacturing and healthcare, despite its potential advantages. The main barriers to use DS in OR/MS are the technical complexity in implementation and a gap between the world views of DS and OR/MS communities. In this paper, we propose a new method that attempts to link together the methodological practices of OR/MS and DS. Using a rep- resentative case study, we show that our methodological framework simplifies significantly DS implementation. This research was funded by the Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technology Centre for Healthcare (MATCH), an Innova- tive Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) (Ref: EP/F063822/1 )

An integrated framework using Augmented Reality (AR) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for enhancing the stakeholders' interaction in 4d modeling of linear projects

    No full text
The project schedule is a critical factor in project success in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. An efficient schedule can develop a shared vision (i.e., understanding) among project stakeholders. The traditional construction industry uses paper documents such as Gantt charts to visualize the sequence of construction activities. However, it might be challenging for stakeholders to comprehend the schedule, particularly in large-scale construction projects (e.g., pipeline construction projects). The recent development of 4D modeling schedules (i.e., integration of Gantt charts and the 3D digital model) within the Building Information Modeling (BIM) environment has facilitated a better understanding of the project schedule. However, the process of developing 4D scheduled in large-scale linear projects is still demanding. Given that smartphones are becoming increasingly popular and widely available, their potential use in the construction industry is emerging. Nowadays, various smartphone applications are employed in the industry, some are equipped with the fascinating feature of Augmented Reality (AR). AR is an emerging technology being actively developed by major corporations (e.g., Google, Microsoft, and Apple). Several researchers have studied AR and its potential applications in the AEC industry, including visualization, simulation, communication, collaboration, information modeling, access to information and evaluation, progress monitoring, education, safety, and inspection. This study introduces a hybrid BIM and AR framework to monitor construction schedules and demonstrate the linear progress of construction projects. A cloud database (Cloud DB) is used to communicate and share information between BIM and AR. It also provides a more powerful visualized schedule based on the AR technology (comparing to the 4D BIM-based schedule) to facilitate a deeper understanding of the stakeholders (e.g., digest and update the project schedule) and to enhance the project control. Finally, the capabilities of the developed platform are demonstrated successfully by applying it to an actual water pipeline case study. Employing the developed framework by the consultant company demonstrates some advantages of the developed hybrid framework compared to the traditional scheduling approach and 4D BIM schedules

Lead-free piezoelectric materials and ultrasonic transducers for medical imaging

    No full text
Piezoelectric materials have been vastly used in ultrasonic transducers for medical imaging. In this paper, firstly, the most promising lead-free compositions with perovskite structure for medical imaging applications have been reviewed. The electromechanical properties of various lead-free ceramics, composites, and single crystals based on barium titanate, bismuth sodium titanate, potassium sodium niobate, and lithium niobate are presented. Then, fundamental principles and design considerations of ultrasonic transducers are briefly described. Finally, recent developments in lead-free ultrasonic probes are discussed and their acoustic performance is compared to lead-based transducers. Focused transducers with different beam focusing methods such as lens focusing and mechanical shaping are explained. Additionally, acoustic characteristics of lead-free probes including the pulse-echo results as well as their imaging capabilities for various applications such as phantom imaging, in vitro intravascular ultrasound imaging of swine aorta, and in vivo or ex vivo imaging of human eyes and skin are reviewed
