Sharing musical expression through embodied listening: a case study based on Chinese guqin music
In this study we report on the result of an experiment in which a guqin music performance was recorded and individual listeners were asked to move their arm along with the music that they heard. Movement velocity patterns were extracted from both the musician and the listeners. The analysis reveals that the listeners’ movement velocity patterns tend to correlate with each other, and with the movement velocity patterns of the player’s shoulders. The findings support the hypothesis that listeners and player share, to a certain degree, a sensitivity for musical expression and its associated corporeal intentionality
Context-aware music recommender system based on automatic detection of the user’s physical activity
[EN] The large amount of music that can be accessed in streaming
nowadays has led to the development of more reliable music recommenda-
tion systems. To this end, context-aware music recommendation systems,
capable of suggesting music taking into account contextual information,
have emerged. Studies have shown that music helps to improve mood
while can change the focus of attention of users during the performance
of some activity, helping to make this activity more bearable. This work
presents a music Context Aware Recommender System in order to moti-
vate users in their daily activities. Its main purpose is to suggest to the
user the most appropriate music to improve the performance of the phys-
ical activity at recommending time. The conducted experiments along a
case study prove that this system is useful and satisfactory when the
activity does not require a great deal of concentration. During activities
that required movement, most users indicated that the perceived effort
decreases when using the recommendation system proposed. They also
indicated that their mood had improved after using this system. This
demonstrates the usefulness of this recommender system while doing
physical activities
Four applications of embodied cognition
This article presents the views of four sets of authors, each taking concepts of embodied cognition into problem spaces where the new paradigm can be applied. The first considers consequences of embodied cognition on the legal system. The second explores how embodied cognition can change how we interpret and interact with art and literature. The third examines how we move through archi- tectural spaces from an embodied cognition perspective. And the fourth addresses how music cogni- tion is influenced by the approach. Each contribution is brief. They are meant to suggest the potential reach of embodied cognition, increase the visibility of applications, and inspire potential avenues for research
