    A plastic load criterion for inelastic design by analysis

    The allowable plastic load in pressure vessel design by analysis is determined by applying a graphical construction to a characteristic load-deformation plot of the collapse behavior of the vessel. This paper presents an alternative approach to the problem. The plastic response is characterized by considering the curvature of a plot of plastic work dissipated in the vessel against the applied load. It is proposed that salient points of curvature correspond to critical stages in the evolution of the gross plastic deformation mechanism. In the proposed plastic work curvature (PWC) criterion of plastic collapse, the plastic load is defined as the load corresponding to zero or minimal plastic work curvature after yielding and the formation of plastic mechanisms have occurred. Application of the proposed criterion is illustrated by considering the elastic-plastic response of a simple cantilever beam in bending and a complex three-dimensional finite element analysis of a nozzle intersection. The results show that the proposed approach gives higher values of plastic load than alternative criteria when the material exhibits strain hardening. It is proposed that this is because the PWC criterion more fully represents the constraining effect of material strain hardening on the spread of plastic deformation

    Challenges to Hygiene Improvement in Developing Countries

    Hygiene is defined as conditions or practices conducive to maintaining health and preventing disease. Hygiene has been shown to reduce diarrheal diseases and assist to improve social outcomes in the community. Improving hygiene faces several problems especially in countries with low income per capita of population. Currently, many developing countries already struggle to cope with consistent water shortages and rapid urbanization causing more pressure to limited resources which in turn result in poor hygienic practices in the communities. The common types of hygiene include personal hygiene, water hygiene, food hygiene, and hygiene during waste handling. Different nongovernmental and governmental organizations face different challenges in achieving high levels of hygiene in communities. Some of these challenges include poverty, lack of political commitment, lack of full community participation, inadequate gender inclusion, inadequate data, lack of coordination among actors, and behavioral issues. To reduce these challenges, several measures have been proposed including community empowerment, pushing for equitable access to hygiene needs, advocating for political commitment, promoting gender equity, and enhancing youth involvement

    Characterising gross plastic deformation in design by analysis

    An investigation of three simple structures is conducted to identify and characterise the condition of gross plastic deformation in pressure vessel design by analysis. Limit analysis and bilinear hardening plastic analysis is performed for three simple example problems. It is found that previously proposed plastic criteria do not fully represent the effect of the hardening material model on the development of the plastic failure mechanism. A new criterion of plastic collapse based on the curvature of the load–plastic work history is therefore proposed. This is referred to as the Plastic Work Curvature or PWC criterion. It is shown that salient points of curvature correspond to critical stages in the physical evolution of the gross plastic deformation mechanism. The PWC criterion accounts for the effect of the bilinear hardening model on the development of the plastic mechanism and gives an enhanced plastic load when compared to the limit load

    Inactivation of pathogens in ecological sanitation latrines in Malawi: An observational follow up study

    IntroductionIn Malawi, EcoSan sludge from ecological sanitation (EcoSan) latrines has been found to contain helminths, Salmonella and E. coli above WHO recommended levels making sludge unsuitable for direct handling and use on food crops. This research investigated survival of pathogens in EcoSan sludge with time after sealing the pit.MethodAn observational longitudinal follow-up study was conducted where EcoSan latrines were followed from August 2015 to July 2016 in Blantyre and Chikwawa in Southern Malawi. The study enrolled 51 latrines in total with 35 latrines [13 fossa alterna (FAs) and 22 urine diverting dry latrines (UDDLs)] remaining at the end of study. Samples were collected five times from each latrine and examined for helminths, Salmonella and E. coli in the laboratory. Poisson regression was employed to assess factors that significantly contribute to pathogen die off at p<0.05.ResultsAverage concentrations of all pathogens investigated reduced over 12-month follow-up period except for Salmonella which increased. A. lumbricoides, increased to 2.3 viable eggs during the second sampling and decreased to 0.4 viable eggs per gram after 12 months of follow-up. Time was the only consistent predictor for concentration of helminths. Type of latrine and location were not significant predictors of helminths concentration (p>0.05). However, Salmonella and E. coli colonies were significantly higher in UDDLs (Blantyre) than FAs (Chikwawa) (p<0.05).ConclusionPathogen concentration was highest after recommended six months of storage posing a public health risk to those handling and using it for agriculture purposes. It is therefore recommended that the current guidelines be reviewed to suit Malawi context. A storage period of one year or more is recommended.

    The Impact of Flow in an EEG-based Brain Computer Interface

    Major issues in Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) include low usability and poor user performance. This paper tackles them by ensuring the users to be in a state of immersion, control and motivation, called state of flow. Indeed, in various disciplines, being in the state of flow was shown to improve performances and learning. Hence, we intended to draw BCI users in a flow state to improve both their subjective experience and their performances. In a Motor Imagery BCI game, we manipulated flow in two ways: 1) by adapting the task difficulty and 2) by using background music. Results showed that the difficulty adaptation induced a higher flow state, however music had no effect. There was a positive correlation between subjective flow scores and offline performance, although the flow factors had no effect (adaptation) or negative effect (music) on online performance. Overall, favouring the flow state seems a promising approach for enhancing users' satisfaction, although its complexity requires more thorough investigations

    Ground penetrating radar technique to locate coal mining related features: case studies in Texas

    The goal of this research project is to identify the efficacy of the ground penetrating radar (GPR) technique in locating underground coal mine related subsidence features at Malakoff and Bastrop, Texas. The work at Malakoff has been done in collaboration with the Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC). RRC has been carrying out reclamation of abandoned underground coal mines at Malakoff since the early 1990Âs. The history of the specific mining operations (at Malakoff and Bastrop) that took place in the early 1900Âs has been difficult to ascertain; therefore, the use of a geophysical techniques like ground penetrating radar to identify hidden voids and potential subsidence features is vital for future reclamation process. Some of the underground mine workings at the field site have collapsed over time affecting the topography by creating sinkholes. GPR data, employing 25 MHz, 50 MHz and 100 MHz frequency antennae, have been collected in common offset patterns and azimuthal pattern. GPR data indicate the mine tunnels possibly connecting existing sinkholes by radargram hyperbolae that correspond with mine openings observed visually or during reclamation. This study also denotes the importance of understanding the variable physical properties of the stratigraphy, which could lead to false alarms by misinterpretation of the radar signals. Natural and man-made above-ground structures cause obstructions in data collection, and hence an optimal design is required for each survey. RRC successfully ground-truthed the data during its reclamation process. In turn, the acquired geophysical data helped to guide the reclamation. At Bastrop, GPR data along with historical documentation led to the conclusion that coal mining did exist in this region but is not a major concern to the immediate stability and safety of the field site. It can be concluded from both the studies that the GPR technique identifies anomalous shafts/tunnels possibly connecting potential failure

    Walsh Transform based Feature vector generation for Image Database Classification

    Thousands of images are generated everyday, which implies the need to build an easy, faster, automated classifier to classify and organize these images. Classification means selecting an appropriate class for a given image from a set of pre-defined classes. The main objective of this work is to explore feature vector generation using Walsh transform for classification. In the first method, we applied Walsh transform on the columns of an image to generate feature vectors. In second method, Walsh wavelet matrix is used for feature vector generation. In third method we proposed to apply vector quantization (VQ) on feature vectors generated by earlier methods. It gives better accuracy, fast computation and less storage space as compared with the earlier methods. Nearest neighbor and nearest mean classification algorithms are used to classify input test image. Image database used for the experimentation contains 2000 images. All these methods generate large number of outputs for single test image by considering four similarity measures, six sizes of feature vector, two ways of classification, four VQ techniques, three sizes of codebook, and five combinations of wavelet transform matrix generation. We observed improvement in accuracy from 63.22% to 74% (55% training data) through the series of techniques

Save the Children has identified in2008 the improvement of the educational experiences and life chances of children andyoung people living in severe poverty as one of its main objectives. As part of this initiative,this study was commissioned in March 2009, to identify the priority areas in relation to Savethe Children's future contribution in West Dunbartonshire to inform future interventions in thefield of home-school partnership that will improve educational outcomes for children living insevere and persistent poverty.This research was designed as a qualitative study aimed toreport on current initiatives and practice in relation to home-school partnerships and servicedelivery for the poorest families and to identify programming opportunities that could formpart of a long term collaborative programme of activities between West Dunbartonshire Council and Save the Children

    National Maglev initiative: California line electric utility power system requirements

    The electrical utility power system requirements were determined for a Maglev line from San Diego to San Francisco and Sacramento with a maximum capacity of 12,000 passengers an hour in each direction at a speed of 300 miles per hour, or one train every 30 seconds in each direction. Basically the Maglev line requires one 50-MVA substation every 12.5 miles. The need for new power lines to serve these substations and their voltage levels are based not only on equipment loading criteria but also on limitations due to voltage flicker and harmonics created by the Maglev system. The resulting power system requirements and their costs depend mostly on the geographical area, urban or suburban with 'strong' power systems, or mountains and rural areas with 'weak' power systems. A reliability evaluation indicated that emergency power sources, such as a 10-MW battery at each substation, were not justified if sufficient redundancy is provided in the design of the substations and the power lines serving them. With a cost of 5.6Mpermile,thepowersystemrequirements,includingthe12−kVDCcablesandtheinvertersalongtheMaglevline,werefoundtobethesecondlargestcostcomponentoftheMaglevsystem,afterthecostoftheguidewaysystem(5.6 M per mile, the power system requirements, including the 12-kV DC cables and the inverters along the Maglev line, were found to be the second largest cost component of the Maglev system, after the cost of the guideway system (9.1 M per mile), out of a total cost of $23 M per mile
