The presence of the mealybug Rhizoecus cacticans (HAMBL.) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) is reported in the Valencia area. The insect causes injuries in the root zone in cactáceas. Some characteristics of the genus are indicated and a description of the specie is done. Data on the damages caused is also presented. Tentative control methods are outlined

    Pile-tunnel interaction: a conceptual analysis

The underground space of densely populated cities contains parts of buildings, utility installations, deep foundations and tunnels. It is possible that new tunnels will be built within close proximity of existing pile foundations. Therefore pile tunnel interaction (PTI) must be assessed so that it is possible to ensure safety for both the tunnel construction and the pile-supported structures. This paper presents a simple model to evaluate the pile settlements and increment of axial force due to tunnel excavation. The displacement field around the tunnel can be used to estimate the pile displacement and the differential displacements around the pile-soil interface. Based on an example plane strain calculation of an unlined tunnel, different possible pile locations were evaluated. The results were compared to six studies from the literature and considerable agreement was obtained for the trends of ratios of pile to surface settlement and increment of axial stress on the pile

This article completes previous studies on the Jewry of Burriana. Nineteen new documents from the Archives of the Kingdom of Valencia are published here. After a short introduction about its origins, the problems and vicissitudes of this aljama during the 15th century, particularly in its last years, are analyzed in detail.

From Sickle to Hammer: Frictions’ Role in the Industrialization of Russia

Treballs Finals del Màster d'Economia, Facultat d'Economia i Empresa, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2017-2018, Tutor: Federico TadeiThis paper studies the structural transformation of Russia in 1885-1940 from an agrarian to an industrial economy. To do so, time-series for Tsarist Russia and the Soviet Union during 1885-1940 are reconstructed and a methodology is developed that allows us to identify the different factors that had the largest quantitative impact on Russia’s economic development, through the reduction of frictions in the productive process. The results of the research showed that investment was the main economic variable in diminishing the production frictions. War communism exacerbated market distortions in the production process, due to their extremist policies in extremely harsh times. During Stalin’s Five-Year Plans, investment was channeled through the granted easy credit of the Gosbank to fund the impossible high production objectives. This set of policies seemed to have the largest impact in the reduction of the production market frictions of the analyzed period, particularly, the first Five Year Plan. At the contrary, education was not found significant in the reduction of the production frictions and, as expected, frictions remained high during the Tsarist Period, deterring industrialization

Comparing surface-soil moisture from the SMOS mission and the ORCHIDEE land-surface model over the Iberian Peninsula

The aim of this study is to compare the surface soil moisture (SSM) retrieved from ESA's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission (SMOS) with the output of the ORCHIDEE (ORganising Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic EcosystEm) land surface model forced with two distinct atmospheric data sets for the period 2010 to 2012. The comparison methodology is first established over the REMEDHUS (Red de Estaciones de MEDición de la Humedad def Suelo) soil moisture measurement network, a 30 by 40. km catchment located in the central part of the Duero basin, then extended to the whole Iberian Peninsula (IP). The temporal correlation between the in-situ, remotely sensed and modelled SSM are satisfactory (r. >. 0.8). The correlation between remotely sensed and modelled SSM also holds when computed over the IP. Still, by using spectral analysis techniques, important disagreements in the effective inertia of the corresponding moisture reservoir are found. This is reflected in the spatial correlation over the IP between SMOS and ORCHIDEE SSM estimates, which is poor (¿. ~. 0.3). A single value decomposition (SVD) analysis of rainfall and SSM shows that the co-varying patterns of these variables are in reasonable agreement between both products. Moreover the first three SVD soil moisture patterns explain over 80% of the SSM variance simulated by the model while the explained fraction is only 52% of the remotely sensed values. These results suggest that the rainfall-driven soil moisture variability may not account for the poor spatial correlation between SMOS and ORCHIDEE products.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

A Bayesian analysis of the effect of selection for growth rate on growth curves in rabbits

    Get PDF
Gompertz growth curves were fitted to the data of 137 rabbits from control (C) and selected (S) lines. The animals came from a synthetic rabbit line selected for an increased growth rate. The embryos from generations 3 and 4 were frozen and thawed to be contemporary of rabbits born in generation 10. Group C was the offspring of generations 3 and 4, and group S was the contemporary offspring of generation 10. The animals were weighed individually twice a week during the first four weeks of life, and once a week thereafter, until 20 weeks of age. Subsequently, the males were weighed weekly until 40 weeks of age. The random samples of the posterior distributions of the growth curve parameters were drawn by using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. As a consequence of selection, the selected animals were heavier than the C animals throughout the entire growth curve. Adult body weight, estimated as a parameter of the Gompertz curve, was 7% higher in the selected line. The other parameters of the Gompertz curve were scarcely affected by selection. When selected and control growth curves are represented in a metabolic scale, all differences disappear
