Searching for insubordination: An analysis of ləbo in Lamaholot

In this paper, we present a description and analysis of ləbo ‘although’ in Lamaholot of eastern Indonesia, which is a subordinating conjunction that expresses a concessive relation between main and subordinate clauses. Although clause-initial conjunctions are predominant in this SVO language, the conjunction ləbo appears in clause-final position. Interestingly, subordinate clauses headed by ləbo can stand alone without a main clause, conveying the speaker’s irritation or blame toward the hearer or an undesirable event. By providing synchronic evidence of different kinds, this paper proposes that this construction involves insubordination, the independent use of constructions exhibiting prima facie characteristics of subordinate clauses (Evans 2007)

Readout fidelity of coaxial holographic digital data page recording in nanoparticle–(thiol–ene) polymer composites

We report on an experimental investigation of nanoparticle-concentration and thiol-to-ene stoichiometric ratio dependences of symbol error rates (SERs) and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of digital data pages recorded at a wavelength of 532 nm in thiol–ene based nanoparticle–polymer composite (NPC) films by using a coaxial holographic digital data storage method. We show that SERs and SNRs at the optimized material condition can be lower than 1 × 10−4 and higher than 10, respectively, without error correction coding. Demonstrative prepositions in Lamaholot

<p>This paper presents a description and analysis of demonstratives in the Lewotobi dialect of<br> Lamaholot. There are two major findings in this paper. First, demonstratives in Lamaholot<br> have basic, nominalized, and adverbial forms. These three forms have different functions in<br> different syntactic environments: locative adverbial, prepositional, prenominal, verbal,<br> referential, noun-modifying, and manner adverbial. Second and more importantly,<br> demonstratives in this language can serve as prepositions. In this function, they can be used<br> to mark NPs as adjuncts and add deictic spatial meanings to them. This use of<br> demonstratives is rarely found in other languages and is an important characteristic of this<br> Austronesian language of eastern Indonesia.</p

Passive elasto-magnetic suspensions: nonlinear models and experimental outcomes

The paper presents a passive elasto-magnetic suspension based on rare-earth permanent magnets: the dynamical system is described with theoretical and numerical nonlinear models, whose results are validated through experimental compar- ison. The goal is to minimize the dependence on mass of the natural frequency of a single degree of freedom system. Community-Based Care of the Elderly in Rural Japan: A Review of Nurse-Led Interventions and Experiences

Nurses play a critical role in delivering care to elderly people at primary health care level but there is no synthesis of research knowledge to guide community nursing practice in Japan. This review aims to identify nurse-led interventions that have been found to improve elder health at village level; the barriers and constraints that service providers face when delivering care to the elderly; and the experiences of elderly people and their caregivers. The electronic databases such as MEDLINE, CINAHL and Google Scholar were searched to retrieve peer-reviewed primary research literature. A narrative synthesis of the findings sections of the papers was applied to identify key themes. These themes are: socioculturally appropriate care; health improvements; barriers and constraints to care delivery and; experience of the elderly and families. Seven papers were included in the review. The synthesis identified that nurse-led health care for the elderly in rural Japan can be effective when it is targeted and culturally sensitive. The studies highlight a number of barriers to the provision of care. There is a need for further research to examine the issues affecting access to rural nursing care including health system factors, as well as the needs of the elderly and families themselves. Such studies will better inform the delivery of programs, reduce inequity and provide socio-culturally appropriate care to improve the well-being of the elderly
