FEBRUARY18,2018 •4 NE\MSSPORTS SCHOOLSSHAPINGi \)ORLD-CLASSATHLETESMalaysia has produced remarkable andoutstanding athletes using a 60-year-oldtriangle method, writes AINA NASAGROOMING seeminglyordinary individuals tobecome world-classathletes is not for thefaint-hearted, but the EducationMinistry, working hand-in-handwith national sports bodies, hasthe eye to identify a diamond inthe rough early on.Utilising a 60-year-old trianglemethod of having a large pool of,. students sifted upwards as theyexcel, our national schools haveproduced athletes who haveflown the Jalur Gemilang highand proud in foreign lands. .From this, five sports schoolsalone have produced more than50 Olympians since the first one,Bukit Jalil Sports School, wasopened in 1996.This' proves impressive for ababy nation of 32 million people,although still on the road toclinching its first Olympic goldmedal since its involvement inthe Games some seven years af-ter achieving independence.Education Ministry sports di-rector Dr Mehander Singh toldthe New Sunday Times thatchurning out world-class ath-letes year after year was some-thing people outrightly demand-ed, but they were clueless on thecomplexity of achieving it."Our pyramid system beginswith the school population ofroughly 5.2 million students, whocompete at the most basic level,between classes and houses attheir individual schools."As they go on, 800,000 ofthese student athletes manage tocompete at district level, andsubsequently 100,000 of them atstate level."At the very top of the pyramid,at the national level, 12,000 to14,000 student athletes in thecountry vie for a place as the na-tion's best."This stable pyramid system en-sures the best athletes start fromthe beginning, he added, identi-fying them early on and harness-ing them to glory.A prime example of this isSoutheast Asia's sprint kingKhairul Hafiz Jantan, who rosefrom the ranks as an athlete atschool level to international lev-el.The 19~year-old Melaka nativeended Malaysia's 14-year droughtof a gold medal in the men's 100mdash at the Kuala Lumpur SeaGames last year, clocking in 10.38seconds.Mehander said the country'ssports development had come along way, paving the way for acluster of today's future ath-letes.He also stressed that an ele-ment that would not be over-looked in the process of devel-oping athletes was education,which was the reason sportsschools primarily take academicsvery seriously."We try to find a balance be-tween academics and sports. Iftheir sports career does not panout, they need something to fallback on."Their career track should bediversified and education shouldbe for life."The ministry's sports deputydirector, Zainal Abas, said anathlete's career was akin to high-jump; the athletes must havesomething to land on after theyhave reached their peak. ."While their sports career willnot last until they are 50 or 60,their education lasts for a life-time .."This is why we prepare a plat-form for them in academics inaddition to sports," he said.A typical day in the life of asports school student, he elab-orated, started as early as6.30am, when they begin theirtwo-hour training.Their academic classes startfrom 9.30am and ends about'noon. Three hours later, theystart training again. They spendtheir nights studying and makingup for those lost contact hoursdue to competitions."We want thinking athletes. IfBrazil can have a medical doctorin its World Cup team, DrSocrates, why should we depriveour own student athletes of ed-ucation?" he said, adding thateven 'during their internationaltravels, student athletes had aca-demic modules with them to en-sure they were not left behind intheir studies ..Zainal was adamant that thesystem used by the ministry inpartnership with the NationalDr Mehander SinghSports Council, the Youth andSports Ministry and other sportsassociations had borne fruit forthe nation.Not only has Bukit Jalil SportsSchool produced' more than 50Olympians, most of the medalsMalaysia has won internationallyhave come from products of thenation's sports schools."Looking forward, the partiesinvolved, such as the EducationMinistry, the Youth and SportsMinistry, the National SportsCouncil, the National Sports In-stitute, sports associations, par-ents and even the private sectormust play their roles."To produce more champions,like Lee Chong Wei, Nicol Davidand Azizulhasni Awang, we mustpool our resources, support andharness our student athletes un-til they stand on internationalpodiums with the Jalur Gernilangraised and the Negaraku played."n/"" The investment the government has made in.'i)~'our sports schools is reflected in the numberof world-class athletes we have.Sports schools are like a platform for youngathletes to advance into an elite team and pursuetheir studies at the same time.To have world-class athletes, we need a world-class mentality. This means, we need to excel notjust physically, but also mentally. I believe a greatathlete also needs to take education seriously.The more students in sports schools, the more wecan nurture and identify talent.I managed to balance my sports training andacademics, thanks to the flexibility of the school.
