Global Dialogue Among Religions: An Islamic Perspective

    Get PDF
The author raises questions about some aspects of the role of the theologian in a global world. He points out that the issues that theology faced in the past do not always directly connect with today’s issues. In the past, a Muslim theologian was considered an expert in theology, law and Sufism. But many definitive categories from the past seem antiquated in today’s complicated post-modern, globalizing world. We must now formulate our discourse in such a way as to be meaningful within our respective communities, but also within a larger pluralistic audience. Dialogue facilitates the process of distinguishing between the essential and the contingent. It can purify us of cultural ideology or imperialist religiosity. The Focolare offers a model for this wide-open dialogue, especially where tradition seems to conflict with innovation

Generalizations of monsky matrices for elliptic curves in legendre form

A positive integer n is said to be congruent if it is the area of a right triangle whose sides are all of rational length. The task of finding which integers are congruent is an old and famous yet still open question in arithmetic geometry called the congruent number problem. It is linked to the theory of elliptic curves as the integer n is congruent if and only if the elliptic curve y²=x³-n²x has a rational point of infinite order. The link between congruent numbers and elliptic curves enables the application of techniques from algebraic geometry to study the problem. One of these methods is the concept of Monsky matrices that can be used to calculate the size of the 2-Selmer group of the elliptic curve y²=x³-n²x. One can use these matrices in order to find new infinite families of non-congruent numbers. The connection to elliptic curves also introduces generalizations to the congruent number problem. For example, one may consider the θ-congruent number problem which studies triangles with a fixed angle of θ instead of only right triangles. This problem is also related to elliptic curves and the concept of Monsky matrices can be generalized to it. In fact, Monsky matrices can be generalized to any elliptic curve that has a Legendre form over the rationals. The goal of this thesis is to construct such a generalization and then to apply it to relevant problems in arithmetic geometry to efficiently reprove old results and find new ones

Injuries of the neck and shoulders are common among workers who perform overhead tasks. In order to develop an injury-free working environment with regards to occupational musculoskeletal stress, it is pivotal to understand the pathophysiology of mechanical stress on the musculoskeletal system. The objective of this research was to study the effect of overhead lifting on the sternocleidomastoid and upper Trapezius muscles. Upper body joint angles were also analyzed using APAS during the overhead lifting. This study was conducted using two devices. The set of equipment incorporates an electromyography device, and the APAS. Two electrodes were placed at the muscle belly of the sternocleidomastoid and the upper Trapezius muscles to record the muscle activity. Each participant was asked to lift 15%, 30% and 45% of his/her MVC, The MVC was determined by a non dynamic lifting task. ANOVA was performed to test the effect of different loads on the muscle activity. Correlation analysis was performed to observe the effect of increasing the lifted weight on the joint angles of the upper body extremities. Results of this research show a strong relationship between neck muscle activities and overhead lifting. The level of sternocleidomastoid activity increased 11.8% from a 15% MVC load to a 30% MVC load and increased 16.53% from a 30%MVC to a 45% MVC. All these values were statistically significant. At the trapezius: a 10.64% increase from 15% MVC to 30% MVC, and a 7.76 % increase from 30% MVC to 45% MVC. The significance level of alpha = 0.05 reveals that weight increase has a significant effect on the MAV EMG of the neck muscles. A slight increase in the elbow joint angle of 0.1% was recorded from 15% MVC to 30% MVC. A 2.88% increase in elbow joint angle was recorded from 30% MVC to 45% MVC, with an overall 2.98% increase from 15% MVC to 45% MVC. There was no effect of changing elbow angles on the sternocleidomastoid muscle. On the other hand, flexion of the shoulder angle in the sagital plane had a significant effect on both the Trapezius and the sternocleidomastoid muscles

Currently, several efforts focus remedying the problem of agricultural soil salinity using eco-friendly strategies. This study aimed particularly the study of Triticum durum (durum wheat) seeds germination in the presence of Pseudomonas strains and hydro-alcoholic extract of Agave americana L. under saline stress conditions. The preliminary phytochemical screening of A. americana, phylogenetic identification and production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) by Pseudomonas strains, in vitro impact of hydro-alcoholic extract and Pseudomonas strains combination on salt stress resistance, preliminary effects of A. americana on Triticum durum germination and phytopathogenic fungi inhibition under salt stress were carried out using corresponding protocols. In in vitro trials, phytochemical screening revealed the richness of A. americana in polyphenols (1014.062±161.017 mM GA equivalent/g FW) and flavonoids (51.065±27.391 mg quercetin equivalent/g FW). The ability of Pseudomonas strains to produce the phytohormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) varied from 116.67±8.25 µg/ml to 857.14±80.50 µg/ml. The leaf extract of A. americana is an effective osmoprotectant that improves the resistance of the strain P1 Pseudomonas plecoglissicida to saline stress. In in vivo experiments, the extract of A. americana did not show any effect on the germination of wheat seeds. However, it effectively inhibited the contamination of seeds by phytopathogenic fungi during germination and saline conditions. Findings of the study revealed that Pseudomonas plecoglissicida and A. americana extract are very promising for the inhibition of phytopathogenic fungi and the alleviation of salt stress

The effects of corporate governance mechanisms on earnings management: Empirical evidence from Moroccan listed firms

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to systematically review and examine the effectiveness of corporate governance mechanisms in restraining earnings management among the listed firms of the Casablanca Stock Exchange. Research methodology: In this study, we used the modified Jones model to calculate discretionary accruals. Our sample comprises 27 firms covering the period from 2016 to 2018, analyzed by the EGLS estimator. Results: Our empirical results show that gender diversity, board size, and audit committee independence reduce the managers' discretion. Simultaneously, we found a significantly positive association between earning management and different corporate governance characteristics such as CEO duality, institutional investor ownership, and family ownership. We do not find any evidence that audit committee size, ownership concentration, and managerial ownership significantly influence discretionary accruals. Limitations: This study's main limitation is that we did not address the direction of discretionary accruals, which does not allow us to detect the motivational aspects behind earnings management. Contribution: The results of this study will help Moroccan authorities in their formulation of an appropriate regulatory framework because very few studies have been conducted in this area in the case of the Moroccan listed companies, especially with a large set of governance variables as our empirical model
