    Get PDF
The article presents the study of the influence of professional competence of EFL learners on their academic writing. The task was approached through analyzing learners’ competence in specific knowledge domains - knowledge of terms and specific concepts, represented as conceptual metaphors. Conceptual metaphor models were analyzed in the English written texts produced by Russian students with different competences in economics – at both non-professional and professional levels of academic discourse (NPAD and PAD respectively). Metaphor Identification Procedure VU University Amsterdam (MIPVU) was applied to metaphor identification, and alternative metaphor and preferential conceptualization analysis was performed to compare the scope of source and the range of target in NPAD and PAD. Findings highlight the areas of commonality as well as divergence in terms of students’ professional competence represented in conceptual metaphors in L2 writing. The main differences in the scope of the source analysis are quantitative rather than qualitative. The range of target comparison between NPAD and PAD indicates a significantly larger range of targets for the professional level students, a lower level of metaphorization for the non-professional level, and inclusive strategies across the two levels. Practical recommendations suggest an improved research methodology for studying metaphor production in EAP and ESP as well as a deeper understanding of ESP content and its structure

The construction industry as a significant part of national economy, develops in the direction of accomplishment of the purposes and matters of the state development, connected with improving of the Russian economy competitiveness (first of all, due to the increase in its efficiency) as well in the direction of the digital transformation. The solution of the digital transformation issues in the industry as well as the increase in the efficiency of investment-and-construction projects implementation is in the plane of implementation and distribution of the technologies of information modeling (BIM). In spite of the fact, that orientation for BIM at the national level was chosen in 2014, the industry still shows the signs of unavailability to mass transition to BIM; that is connected with some problems and obstacles. The authors of this article conducted the research in the form of poll, directed to identification of such factors and their importance. 180 respondents (representatives of the enterprises and organizations, authorities, professional associations, whose activity is connected with the implementation of investment-and-construction projects, became the participants of the research. During the processing of the research results the hypothesis was made, that the type of activity of the organization has an impact on its assessment of the importance of the factors, interfering BIM implementation. The purpose of the analysis, which results are provided in this article, was the verification of this hypothesis. The conclusion is drawn on the basis of the received results, that the type of the organization activity has an impact on its assessment of the importance of factors (problems), interfering BIM implementation. Thus, the hypothesis of the research was confirmed. At the same time, it was revealed, that the respondents from the Universities group highly appreciate the problems and obstacles of BIM implementation most of all, in comparison with other participants. The respondents from the Investors group, on the contrary, are inclined to a lower estimate of the problems importance

The subject of study in this article is the phenomenon of public-private partnership (PPP). The purpose of the study is to analyze the Russian type of public-private partnership on the basis of qualitative analytical method. The authors put forward the following hypothesis: the application of the method of determinant analysis presented in this article and the results of testing this method increase the validity of managerial decisions in the field of public-private partnership. To achieve the goal of research, the method of determinant analysis is substantiated in this article – the identification of the factor and resulting clusters of the subject of study. On the basis of this method, the formula of the basic characteristic of a public-private partnership is defined; the evolutionary, object-subject, subjective, environmental, formal and methodological determinants are revealed. Concept analysis allowed to justify the development of the market of public services as a social and economic result of the public-private partnership. The formation of the supply and demand in the social and transport infrastructure was fragmentarily considered. In the subjective analysis, the interests of the actors were identified and determinants of consumers of public services were allocated. The authors of the article identified the factor clusters of the environment and suggested ways to improve the assessment of development of the public-private partnership. In result of the research of the methodology determinant, it was suggested to extend the method of the public comparator to evaluate PPP projects. The results of the determinant analysis allowed to determine a comprehensive model for assessing the condition and development of the public-private partnership. To identify the functional request of the super-system, the analysis at the macro level was carried out and the PPP model was identified as a determinant of state administration. The article substantiates that the results of study using the determinant analysis will allow to unlock the potential of public-private partnerships as a determinant of new state administration in modern realities. Keywords: determinant analysis, determinant, public-private partnership (PPP), PPP project, infrastructure, market for public services, evaluation of PPP project, public comparator. An overview of trends in the development of Russian terminology is provided in the article. The issues of the historical roots and stages of development of Russian terminology, the peculiarities of the formation of this science are highlighted, and also the evolution of its main concept “term” is revealed. It is shown that the emergence of terminology as a science correlates with the era of great Russian natural science discoveries, characterized by social challenges. It is noted that one of the prerequisites for the formation of the theory of the term is the Russian philosophical thought of the early twentieth century. An overview of terminological concepts and views is built taking into account the principle of integrity and continuity of the main stages in the development of terminology. The object and subject of terminology in dynamics are shown with an emphasis on the specifics of the development of the term science within the framework of Russian philological science. Particular attention is paid to the description of models of terminological activity in different aspects. It is pointed out that the modern stage of terminology is in the development stage. The main conclusions of the study are formulated and the prospects for the further development of Russian terminology as a science are considered. A long way of development of Russian terminology is presented, demonstrating sufficient grounds for considering it as one of the leading directions of Russian linguistic science

This paper deals with the representation of the concept TERRORISM in the English discourse of news online resources. The research is carried out on the basis of the texts in which the studied concept is verbalized. The choice of the material is influenced by the fact that today's Internet resources reflect the major trends in the global community, faced with the problem of terrorism

    Mobility of Contemporary Terminology

The subject of this research is the justification of the category of “terminology mobility”. The question arises about the need to study the mobility of terminology, which has not been previously analyzed. The authors focus on the characteristics of terminology mobility based on theoretical assumptions related to the concept of knowledge transfer and the dynamic nature of terminology. The authors consider mobility as a complex evolutionary process, which, unlike dynamics comparable to movement or simple replacement of linguistic units, serves as a source of terminology renewal in language. A review of modern terminological studies is carried out in order to identify the theoretical foundations and prerequisites for the formation of the new concept of “terminology mobility”. A significant role is given to discourse and social (extralinguistic) factors. We see a unique cycle of terminology mobility, starting with the identification of a term as a linguistic sign and ending with a metaterm. It is asserted that terminology mobility goes through five stages of development. The multi-stage structure of terminology mobility is manifested in the transition to a more complex sphere (domain) of functioning: from a unit of specialized knowledge, through a specialized form of their organization — a terminological system, through a specialized text, communicative situation, professional activity to the tasks and needs of society

EVALUATION OF METAPHOR IDENTIFICATION PROCEDURE VU (MIPVU) BY THE CRITERIA OF A TRULY SCIENTIFIC METHOD

    Get PDF
Due to the growing scholarly interest in metaphor in language, discourse, and thought within cognitive linguistics, metaphor identification is now the center of attention. A lot of methods have been developed to identify metaphors with different degrees of accuracy. The algorithms are based on different theoretical premises; their developers pursue various goals, for example, fully automated computer metaphor search. In order to choose the most reliable method for a given study, it is necessary to evaluate the existing methods by a number of specifically designed criteria. This article is aimed at evaluating Metaphor Identification Procedure VU (MIPVU) by nine criteria that in Russian scientific tradition are considered to be useful for determining whether a method is truly scientific. Before the evaluation is given, the essence of MIPVU (including all steps) is described and a context is analyzed with the help of the procedure, so this paper can also be used for initial familiarization with the procedure
