Strongly nonlinear waves in capillary electrophoresis

In capillary electrophoresis, sample ions migrate along a micro-capillary filled with a background electrolyte under the influence of an applied electric field. If the sample concentration is sufficiently high, the electrical conductivity in the sample zone could differ significantly from the background.Under such conditions, the local migration velocity of sample ions becomes concentration dependent resulting in a nonlinear wave that exhibits shock like features. If the nonlinearity is weak, the sample concentration profile, under certain simplifying assumptions, can be shown to obey Burgers' equation (S. Ghosal and Z. Chen Bull. Math. Biol. 2010, 72(8), pg. 2047) which has an exact analytical solution for arbitrary initial condition. In this paper, we use a numerical method to study the problem in the more general case where the sample concentration is not small in comparison to the concentration of background ions. In the case of low concentrations, the numerical results agree with the weakly nonlinear theory presented earlier, but at high concentrations, the wave evolves in a way that is qualitatively different.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 Appendix, 2 videos (supplementary material

    Brokers of Modernity

"The story of modernist architects in East Central Europe. The first half of the twentieth century witnessed the rise of modernist architects. Brokers of Modernity reveals how East Central Europe turned into one of the pre-eminent testing grounds of the new belief system of modernism. By combining the internationalism of the CIAM organization and the modernising aspirations of the new states built after 1918, the reach of modernist architects extended far beyond their established fields. Yet, these architects paid a price when Europe’s age of extremes intensified. Mainly drawing on Polish, but also wider Central and Eastern European cases, this book delivers a pioneering study of the dynamics of modernist architects as a group, including how they became qualified, how they organized, communicated and attempted to live the modernist lifestyle themselves. In doing so, Brokers of Modernity raises questions concerning collective work in general and also invites us to examine the social role of architects today.

Heather D. Dehaan, Stalinist City Planning, Professionals, Performance, and Power

Heather DeHaan’s book, entitled Stalinist City Planning, is at first glance “only” a case study of Nizhnii Novgorod. At second glance, however, it delivers exactly what the title promises – not in the sense of an encompassing survey but as a well‑chosen approach which enables the author to present a deep‑cutting and multifaceted analysis of the functioning of city planning and planning in general in the Stalinist Soviet Union. This achievement is partially due to the fact that Nizhnii Novgoro..

Slow dynamics and stress relaxation in a liquid as an elastic medium

We propose a new framework to discuss the transition from exponential relaxation in a liquid to the regime of slow dynamics. For the purposes of stress relaxation, we show that a liquid can be treated as an elastic medium. We discuss that, on lowering the temperature, the feed-forward interaction mechanism between local relaxation events becomes operative, and results in slow relaxation.Comment: changed conten

Time dependence of the survival probability of an opinion in a closed community

The time dependence of the survival probability of an opinion in a closed community has been investigated in accordance with social temperature by using the Kawasaki-exchange dynamics based on previous study in Ref. [1]. It is shown that the survival probability of opinion decays with stretched exponential law consistent with previous static model. However, the crossover regime in the decay of the survival probability has been observed in this dynamic model unlike previous model. The decay characteristics of both two regimes obey to stretched exponential.Comment: Revised version of the paper (9 page, 5 Figures). Submitted to Int. J. Mod. Phys.

Psychoacoustical evaluation of the pitch-synchronous overlap-and-add speech-waveform manipulation technique using single-format stimuli

This article presents two experiments dealing with a psychoacoustical evaluation of the pitch synchronous overlap-and-add (PSOLA) technique. This technique has been developed for modification of duration and fundamental frequency of speech and is based on simple waveform manipulations. Both experiments were aimed at deriving the sensitivity of the auditory system to the basic distortions introduced by PSOLA. In experiment I, manipulation of fundamental frequency was applied to synthetic single-formant stimuli under minimal stimulus uncertainty, level roving, and formant-frequency roving. In experiment II, the influence of the positioning of the so-called "pitch markers" was studied. Depending on the formant and fundamental frequency, experimental data could be described reasonably well by either a spectral intensity-discrimination model or a temporal model based on detecting changes in modulation of the output of a single auditory filter. Generally, the results were in line with psychoacoustical theory on the auditory processing of resolved and unresolved harmonics

    Electron Glass Dynamics

Examples of glasses are abundant, yet it remains one of the phases of matter whose understanding is very elusive. In recent years, remarkable experiments have been performed on the dynamical aspects of glasses. Electron glasses offer a particularly good example of the 'trademarks' of glassy behavior, such as aging and slow relaxations. In this work we review the experimental literature on electron glasses, as well as the local mean-field theoretical framework put forward in recent years to understand some of these results. We also present novel theoretical results explaining the periodic aging experiment.Comment: Invited review to appear in Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physic
