The relationship between reading and listening skills with the self-concept in studying of Russian and English in Azerbaijan

Recent research has focused on the domain-specificity of academic self-concept finding that there were separate self-concept constructs for each school subject which demonstrated high positive relations with their achievements in the corresponding domain. In the context of research on self-concept, there is a shortage of the studies which extended domain-specificity of academic self-concept to skill-specific self-concepts contrasting them with mathematics. Few studies investigated self-concept in the verbal domain indicating separate skill-specific self-concepts. This study examined receptive self-concepts and their relationship with achievements in Russian and English. Considering classical I/E model that implied negative effect of high performance in one school domain on the opposite domain of academic self-concept, most studies have limited this prediction to classical domains of academic self-concepts. Consisting of five parts and one separate study of this research provide insights relationship between the foreign language and its receptive skills with self-concept. Sub studies focused on how receptive skills related to self-concept in the corresponding domain, how students construct their perceptions within language domain. Another focus of interest to examine how achievements related to students’ self-concept in matching and nonmatching domains. Study one provides insights about twofold dimensionality of language self-concept. This study examined these two different components and their relations with achievement measures within foreign language domain and revealed the separation of self-concept components and provided evidence that two dimensions should be separated and not conflated. Furthermore, revealed weak correlations between English and Russian showed that single verbal self-concept is inadequate for different foreign languages such as English and Russian to represent multilingual learners. To understand self-concept in the verbal domain and obtain a clear picture of students’ perceptions, firstly, the study explored academic self-concept, including two foreign languages, aiming to expand classical math/verbal I/E model of academic self-concept to two foreign language domains and find out that whether the contrasting domains of self-concept generalizes according to two foreign languages or varies. This study revealed three distinctive self-concepts for three school subjects indicating the multidimensional structure of self-concept. Subsequently, the study revealed the near-zero correlations between math and two foreign languages. Further, the study revealed that models that distinguish skill-specific self-concepts in reading and listening showed a better fit to the data. The results of a structural equation modelling demonstrated that cognitive and affective self-concepts were independent, but strongly correlated constructs. The correlations between two components of self-concepts with achievements in two foreign languages' reading domain were invariant across gender. This study's findings can encourage future research on examination of more domain-specific self-concepts that conceptualizes twofold multidimensional structure of the self-concept and its relationship with achievement. This study might be appropriate for secondary school instructors to help their students' understanding of their strengths and weaknesses in reading domain

The issues of teaching a foreign language using computer technology are considered in this article. Moreover, the article gives the concept of such a term as the communicative activity of students, that is, practical knowledge of speaking skills in a foreign language; lists the tasks of the teacher, whose role is to enhance the speech activity of each student in the educational process, creating a situation for their creative activity. The article provides evidence that the use of computer technologies in the classroom makes it possible to move from reproductive forms of educational activity to independent, creative types of work, where the emphasis is on the formation of students' communicative culture and the development of skills in working with various types of information and its sources. The issues of teaching a foreign language using computer technology are considered in this article. Exploring a First-Order Factor Structure Within a Measure of Smoking Motives: Examining Evidence for an Affect Regulation Smoking Motive Factor

Smoking is a leading cause of death, yet a large number of people continue to smoke. While nicotine dependence is accepted as a motivator, other factors play a role too. The purpose of this study was to explore smoking motivation to determine if distinct smoking motives condense into a smaller number of higher-order factors, with one possibly related to affect regulation (e.g. Neuroticism). The sample consisted of 200 adults (age: M=33.26, SD=10.41) including Caucasian (n = 163), African American (n = 14), Asian (n = 17), and Latino ( n = 4). Males made up 61% of the sample; 39% were female. Participants completed self-report measures tapping nicotine dependence, smoking motives, personality factors, Neuroticism facets, and stress. As expected, two factors were extracted in the exploratory factor analysis; one related to affect regulation. Both factors were associated with nicotine dependence. Counter to expectations, Neuroticism was unrelated to the affect regulation factor. Exploratory analyses suggested this may be due to the high level of dependent smokers in our sample. Dependence level may play a role in the relationship between smoking motives and personality and it may be that in smokers with higher levels of dependence, physiological nicotine dependence masks individual differences such as personality traits and non-physical motivations. The limitations of the study are discussed, as are implications for future research in this area.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/133667/1/Karimova - Exploring a First-Order Factor Structure within a Measure of Smoking Motives.pdf13Description of Karimova - Exploring a First-Order Factor Structure Within a Measure of Smoking Motives.pdf : Master's Thesi

AbstractThe studyof interpersonal conflicts in teenagers’ environment, and also the forms and methods of teenagers’ interpersonal conflicts prevention has become the aim of the research. 137 eighth gradestudents of comprehensive schools of the city of Kazan were recruited for the experiment. The battery of tests was used to collect information: T. Leary's technique to diagnose interpersonal relationships; the scale for theassessment of psychological climate in the collective; K. Thomas'stest - description of behavior, and also methods of mathematical statistics, Student's T-criterion to check the hypotheses of reliability of thedifferencebetween means. The results revealed during the stating stage showed a low degree of psychological climate friendlinessin the collective that, in its turn, causes interpersonal conflicts. Such strategies of behavior as compromise and rivalry dominate in the group of testees in conflict situations. After the experiment there were obtained the following results: the psychological climate in the collective has improved up to the average degree of favorability; in conflict situations teenagers have started to choose such strategies of behavior as compromise and cooperation, the latter of which is aimed at theconflict constructive resolution. The number of the respondents in the group of testees who have chosenthe friendly type of interpersonal relations has increased i.e. this is the tendencyto collaboration and cooperation

Structural ambiguity in N. Chomsky’s syntactic doctrine

The relevance of the study of ambiguity at the syntactic level is due to the wide distribution of this phenomenon in modern English, the insufficient degree of its knowledge, and the need for linguistic interpretation of syntactically ambiguous constructions in order to optimize the communicative process. In this article, we will consider such varieties of non-standard syntactic relations as re-decomposition and variability, define the concept of syntactic homonymy, delimit it into subtypes, and indicate the causes of its occurrence. Ambiguity is available not only on the deep structure of the sentence but also on the surface structure of the sentence. The main criteria or even key determinants of the deep structure of sentence are multiple meanings of words, sayings, or sentences. The many examples we give proved that a word or even sentence may have some lexical meaning, which can create difficulties for the language carrier. We come to the conclusion that, the relationship between the "deep" and "surface" structure is varied. During research we met that the structural relationships between their "deep" and "surface" structure are indistinguishable, and the transition from surface structure to deep structure is quite simple. Some cases have also been found that mutually beneficial relationships are not easy, sometimes disputed, and requires a special effort to transition from "surface" structure to "deep" structure
