A Glimpse into CSA Cresco: Cultivating Food for Broader Transformative Change in Mountain Territories

    Get PDF
Cresco is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project in Varaita Valley, a mountain area in the South-Western part of Piedmont (Italy). The project started in 2021, in the midst of the Corona pandemic and it was born from the collaboration between Lorenzo and Pietro. Neither of them had much farming experience before. Initially, Lorenzo worked as a web designer in Turin to only later change to work as a chef and then as a farmer in 2017. Pietro, in the meantime, was studying Environmental..

Multistress characterization of fault mechanisms in aerospace electric actuators

    Get PDF
The concept behind the More Electric Aircraft (MEA) is the progressive electrification of on-board actuators and services. It is a way to reduce or eliminate the dependence on hydraulic, mechanical and the bleed air/pneumatic systems and pursue efficiency, reliability and maintainability. This paper presents a specialised test rig whose main objective is to assess insulation lifespan modelling under various stress conditions, especially investigating the interaction between ageing factors. The test set-up is able to reproduce a multitude of environmental and operational conditions at which electric drives and motors, used in aerospace applications, are subjected. It is thus possible to tailor the test cycle in order to mimic the working cycle of an electrical motor during real operation in aircraft application. The developed test-rig is aimed at projecting the technology readiness to higher levels of maturity, in the context of electrical motors and drives for aerospace applications. Its other objective is to validate and support the development of a comprehensive insulation degradation model

The use of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) in the prediction of chemical composition and in vitro neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility of Italian alfalfa hay.

The objective of the present work was to develop calibration equations for the prediction of chemical composition and forage digestibility from different populations of alfalfa hay harvested in Parmigiano- Reggiano cheese production area of Northern Italy. Due to annual climatic variations that affect soil and growing conditions and consequently cause high variability in chemical and physical composition, 319 hay samples from four years were used to build robust calibration. NIRS calibration equations were developed for the prediction of in vitro NDF digestibility (IVNDFd) and 20 chemical parameters (dry matter, starch, fat, sugar, fiber fractions, crude protein, nitrogen fractions and some minerals) of Italian hay. The results obtained show that NIRS equations greatly explain the variation in the composition existing in alfalfa hays grown in Northern Italy, except for a few parameters characterized by low variability range value. The equations obtained for the prediction of biological and chemical parameters explain the major part of the variation existing in the reference data, which open great prospects for the use of NIRS in planning feeding strategies of livestock, based on alfalfa forage

Partial Discharges in Electrical Machines for the More Electric Aircraft—Part I: A Comprehensive Modeling Tool for the Characterization of Electric Drives Based on Fast Switching Semiconductors

This paper proposed a modelling approach for the comprehensive analysis of high-frequency challenges in electrical drives designed for aerospace applications, in particular the overvoltage at the machine terminals and the voltage distribution within windings. After a separate description of the models for the estimation of these insulation stress sources, the combined model was detailed. The main benefit of developing a combined, flexible and comprehensive tool is that both overvoltage at machine terminals and uneven voltage distribution can be calculated simultaneously, without neglecting the voltage overshoot when estimating the voltage distribution (and vice versa). In fact, an accurate calculation of the terminal overvoltage is necessary to provide a good estimation of the voltage within winding turns since its waveform shape can be quite different with respect to the converter output, even with cables of a few meters. A case study based on a real aerospace application was considered to investigate the model validity and accuracy. Experimental results were performed on a complete system comprising a SiC-based converter, a connecting cable and a machine stator, proving the simulation model accuracy in terms of peak voltages of both the line-to-line terminal voltage and the turn voltage distribution across the first turns, which are the most relevant quantities for the sake of this study as well as for the investigations of the subsequent companion papers. In the forthcoming papers, the effects of different rise times and cable lengths on the inception of partial discharges will be investigated through fast parametric simulation carried out using the proposed combined model. The feasibility of using conventional insulation systems for aircraft applications using SiC drives fed by a ±270 V DC bus voltage will be discussed, with the aim of signaling and finding solutions to improve the overall reliability

Feature Evaluation for Effective Bearing Prognostics.

    No full text
International audienceRolling element bearing failure is one of the foremost causes of breakdown in rotating machinery. It is not uncommon to replace a defected/used bearing with a new one that has shorter remaining useful life than the defected one. Thus, prognostics of bearing plays critical role for increased availability and reduced cost. Effective prognostics highly depend on the quality of the extracted features. Diagnostics is basically a classification problem, whereas the prognostics is the process of forecasting the future health states. The quality of the features for classification has been studied thoroughly. However, evaluation of the quality of features for prognostics is a relatively new problem. This paper presents an evaluation method for the goodness of the features for prognostics and presents results on bearings run until failure in a lab environment

Kappa Index Versus CSF Oligoclonal Bands in Predicting Multiple Sclerosis and Infectious/Inflammatory CNS Disorders

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) kappa free light chains (KFLC) are gaining increasing interest as markers of intrathecal immunoglobulin synthesis. The main aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy (AUC) of the kappa index (CSF/serum KFLC divided by the CSF/serum albumin ratio) compared to CSF oligoclonal IgG bands (OCB) in predicting Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or a central nervous system infectious/inflammatory disorder (CNSID)

Internal current return path for ground leakage current mitigation in current source inverters

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes in detail the effect of a simple solution for ground leakage current mitigation applicable to transformerless three-phase current source inverter (CSI). The circuit modification solution is assessed for both traditional CSI topology and for CSI with an additional seventh switch, in literature named CSI7 (or H7), in particular with the splitting of the dc input inductance. In the present work, the solution is applied to grid-connected converters for string photovoltaic applications: scope of the circuit modification is to provide an internal return path from the wye connected capacitors of the output CL filter. This additional return path is able to significantly reduce the ground leakage current without adversely affecting THD. The performance of the proposed solution is assessed by the numerical simulations in case of a string of photovoltaic (PV) modules and the different behavior of CSI and CSI7 topologies is thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the definition of V-{cmZC} is assessed by applying it to the common mode equivalent circuits for CSI7 with additional return path and their validation by means of a two-step simulation. The simulation results and experimental validation shows good agreement and confirm that the proposed solution is able to strongly reduce the ground leakage current. © 2013 IEEE
