Short-term memory load and pronunciation rate

    Get PDF
In a test of short-term memory recall, two subjects attempted to recall various lists. For unpracticed subjects, the time it took to read the list is a better predictor of immediate recall than the number of items on the list. For practiced subjects, the two predictors do about equally well. If the items that must be recalled are unfamiliar, it is advantageous to keep the items short to pronounce. On the other hand, if the same items will be encountered over and over again, it is advantageous to make them distinctive, even at the cost of adding to the number of syllables

Remade in Our Image: Gender, Melodrama, and Conservatism in Post-9/11 Slasher Remakes

    Get PDF
This project details the ways in which the classic slasher films of the 1970s, and their post-9/11 remakes, are representative of the individual and complex world views out of which each set of films were borne. The remakes manipulate gender roles including those of the Final Girl and the mother; genre conventions, including increases in domestic melodrama and pathos; production models, including the use of star actors, directors, and producers; sexuality and presentation of the sexualized female body; and race, especially in fine differences between white and non-white characters. In doing so, the post-9/11 films reveal a conservative cultural climate that strives to show recovery of the nuclear family unit after trauma, unlike the originals which are more nihilistic in tone and portray families as either absent or deeply flawed and unrecoverable

VOLTAGE BREAKDOWN IN IONIZED AIR AT FREQUENCIES FROM ZERO TO 10,000 MEGACYCLES

During the summer of 1957, The Martin Company, Denver Division, expressed a need for experimental data which would enable more exact design of surface- mounted antennas on missiles which would avoid corona and voltage breakdown in the higher atmosphere. Inasmuch as some experimental data were then avail* able, a request was also made for a literature search on voltage breakdown is air as a function of pressure, frequency, pulse length, electrode spacing, and degree of ionization. Contract No. DEN 57-5652, under Prime Contract AF 04 (645) 56, was initiated with the Purdue Research Foundation in January, 1958, to obtain (l) a literature search and (2) experimental data covering a range of the parameters listed above. The literature search was delivered to The Martin Company on November 25, 1958. The experimental data are the subject of this report

First-year Experience of Transfer Students: Onboarding at a Metropolitan University

    Get PDF
As students transition from one phase of the education pipeline to the next, support programs are often put in place to make the transition and onboarding process as smooth as possible. While support programs for first-year students entering college directly from high school are common place at most institutions, onboarding practices for transfer students entering institutions are less consistent. The purpose of this study is to explore the onboarding experiences of transfer students as they prepare to begin coursework at a new university. This case study will be conducted at a Metropolitan institution with a student population that is historically comprised of a large number of transfer students.Educational Leadership and Policy Studie

Structured computer-based training in the interpretation of neuroradiological images

    Get PDF
Computer-based systems may be able to address a recognised need throughout the medical profession for a more structured approach to training. We describe a combined training system for neuroradiology, the MR Tutor that differs from previous approaches to computer-assisted training in radiology in that it provides case-based tuition whereby the system and user communicate in terms of a well-founded Image Description Language. The system implements a novel method of visualisation and interaction with a library of fully described cases utilising statistical models of similarity, typicality and disease categorisation of cases. We describe the rationale, knowledge representation and design of the system, and provide a formative evaluation of its usability and effectiveness

Testing theoretical models of magnetic damping using an air track

Magnetic braking is a long-established application of Lenz's law. A rigorous analysis of the laws governing this problem involves solving Maxwell's equations in a time-dependent situation. Approximate models have been developed to describe different experiences related to this phenomenon. In this paper we present a new method for the analysis of the magnetic braking using a magnet fixed to the glider of an air track. The forces acting on the glider, a result of the eddy currents, can be easily observed and measured. As a consequence of the air track inclination, the glider accelerates at the beginning, although it asymptotically tends towards a uniform rectilinear movement characterized by a terminal speed. This speed depends on the interaction between the magnetic field and the conductivity properties of the air track. Compared with previous related approaches, in our experimental setup the magnet fixed to the glider produces a magnetic braking force which acts continuously, rather than over a short period of time. The experimental results satisfactorily concur with the theoretical models adapted to this configuration.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
