Translating the representation of the tourist landscape: A corpus-based study

    Get PDF
Abstract This paper will present a corpus-based study on the translated language of tourism, focusing in particular on the stylistics of tourist landscapes. Through a comparative analysis of a specifically designed corpus of travel articles originally written in English (namely the TourEC-Tourism English Corpus) and a corpus of tourist texts translated from a variety of languages into English (namely the T-TourEC – Translational Tourism English Corpus), the study will investigate a selection of collocates, concordances and keywords related to the description and representation of tourist settings in both corpora. The aim will be that of identifying differences, aspects or practices to be potentially improved that characterize the translated language of tourism with respect to tourist texts originally written in English. Results will show that the discursive patterns of translated texts differ from the stylistic strategies typically employed in native English for the linguistic representation of landscape and settings due to phenomena of translation universals, and that these differences may affect the relating communicative functions, properties and persuasive effects of tourist promotional discourse

Language Variation and Translation: a Theoretical Overview

Language variation is a feature strictly correlated to the same nature of languages, representing an issue of crucial importance in the context of language studies, particularly within the field of translation. This paper will be therefore dedicated to the description of some of the most common and effective strategies identified by language theorists, and thoroughly employed by expert translators, with reference to the translation of language variation phenomena, in order to suggest a clear overview and methodological reference for prospective and novice translators.I fenomeni di variazione linguistica rappresentano una caratteristica intrinseca alla stessa natura delle lingue e un aspetto cruciale nel contesto delle discipline linguistiche, in particolare nel settore della traduzione.

The concept of language contact has been investigated by linguists and researchers in many domains, textual genres and languages (Yule, 1996; Cortese and Hymes 2001; Pinnavaia 2001; Carstairs McCarthy, 2002; Kennedy, 2003; Matthews, 2005), and associated with numerous different communicative situations, forms, and functions related to the use of foreign words in a text. However, the definition of language contact emerging from all these studies is not always a clear-cut one, since there is often an overlap of situations which can describe the presence of foreign words in a text, and the same process of linguistic borrowing is under constant evolution due to social and cultural changes in the relation between host and foreign languages or in the conceptual evolution of a particular topic. The following paper will discuss these numerous implications in one specific linguistic domain, namely the language of tourism. After a brief account of the theoretical framework related to this phenomenon (Dann, 1996; Cappelli, 2013), the paper will present the results of a corpus driven analysis carried out on an English corpus of travel journalism, with the aim of identifying the most significant contexts of employment of this linguistic technique and its functions. The study will focus in particular on the relationship between the use of foreign terms to indicate specific topics and destinations described in the texts of the corpus and their related discursive environments, in order to investigate whether loan words and expressions may be considered a pragmatic marker of social attitude in tourist discourse underlining implied different approaches towards specific themes and destinations

Climate change and its impacts on societies, ecosystems and water resources represent one of the most important environmental, social and economic challenges today. The case study of Canada and Quebec aims at discussing climate change and its effects on water resources at the regional level. These effects occur randomly and are geographically distinct. Besides, they can be either negative or positve as they create opportunities in some sectors. climate change issue thus appeals to manage water resources adequately and encourage to make decision and elaborate policies in the medium and long term. It is crucial to consider climate change into a sounded water resources management so as to minimize the degree of their impacts and ensure the sustainability of water resources

Targeting kinases with anilinopyrimidines: Discovery of N-phenyl-N'-[4-(pyrimidin-4-ylamino)phenyl]urea derivatives as selective inhibitors of class III receptor tyrosine kinase subfamily

Kinase inhibitors are attractive drugs/drug candidates for the treatment of cancer. The most recent literature has highlighted the importance of multi target kinase inhibitors, although a correct balance between specificity and non-specificity is required. In this view, the discovery of multityrosine kinase inhibitors with subfamily selectivity is a challenging goal. Herein we present the synthesis and the preliminary kinase profiling of a set of novel 4-anilinopyrimidines. Among the synthesized compounds, the N-phenyl-N\u2019-[4-(pyrimidin-4-ylamino)phenyl]urea derivatives selectively targeted some members of class III receptor tyrosine kinase family. Starting from the structure of hit compound 19 we synthesized a further compound with an improved affinity toward the class III receptor tyrosine kinase members and endowed with a promising antitumor activity both in vitro and in vivo in a murine solid tumor model. Molecular modeling simulations were used in order to rationalize the behavior of the title compounds

This is a cooperative investigation with the European Space Agency (ESA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for accommodation and operation aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Research Summary: Materials Science Laboratory - Columnar-to-Equiaxed Transition in Solidification Processing (CETSOL) and Microstructure Formation in Casting of Technical Alloys under Diffusive and Magnetically Controlled Convective Conditions (MICAST) are two complementary investigations which will examine different growth patterns and evolution of microstructures during crystallization of metallic alloys in microgravity. The aim of these experiments is to deepen the quantitative understanding of the physical principles that govern solidification processes in cast alloys by directional solidification

Epigenetic and antitumor effects of platinum(IV)-octanoato conjugates

We present the anticancer properties of cis, cis, trans-[Pt(IV)(NH3)2Cl2(OA)2] [Pt(IV)diOA] (OA = octanoato), Pt(IV) derivative of cisplatin containing two OA units appended to the axial positions of a six-coordinate Pt(IV) center. Our results demonstrate that Pt(IV)diOA is a potent cytotoxic agent against many cancer cell lines (the IC50 values are approximately two orders of magnitude lower than those of clinically used cisplatin or Pt(IV) derivatives with biologically inactive axial ligands). Importantly, Pt(IV)diOA overcomes resistance to cisplatin, is significantly more potent than its branched Pt(IV) valproato isomer and exhibits promising in vivo antitumor activity. The potency of Pt(IV)diOA is a consequence of several factors including enhanced cellular accumulation correlating with enhanced DNA platination and cytotoxicity. Pt(IV)diOA induces DNA hypermethylation and reduces mitochondrial membrane potential in cancer cells at levels markedly lower than the IC50 value of free OA suggesting the synergistic action of platinum and OA moieties. Collectively, the remarkable antitumor effects of Pt(IV)diOA are a consequence of the enhanced cellular uptake which makes it possible to simultaneously accumulate high levels of both cisplatin and OA in cells. The simultaneous dual action of cisplatin and OA by different mechanisms in tumor cells may result in a markedly enhanced and unique antitumor effects of Pt(IV) prodrugs
