    Cross-language Information Retrieval

Two key assumptions shape the usual view of ranked retrieval: (1) that the searcher can choose words for their query that might appear in the documents that they wish to see, and (2) that ranking retrieved documents will suffice because the searcher will be able to recognize those which they wished to find. When the documents to be searched are in a language not known by the searcher, neither assumption is true. In such cases, Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) is needed. This chapter reviews the state of the art for CLIR and outlines some open research questions.Comment: 49 pages, 0 figure

This bachelor thesis provides a translation of preface and selected part of The Valleys of the Assassins and Other Persian Travels, a travelogue by English-Italian adventurer and writer Freya Stark. The second part of the thesis consists of a commentary on the translation, including analysis of the original text, description of chosen translation method, translation problems and shifts in the translation. A prosody-based vector-space model of dialog activity for information retrieval

Search in audio archives is a challenging problem. Using prosodic information to help find relevant content has been proposed as a complement to word-based retrieval, but its utility has been an open question. We propose a new way to use prosodic information in search, based on a vector-space model, where each point in time maps to a point in a vector space whose dimensions are derived from numerous prosodic features of the local context. Point pairs that are close in this vector space are frequently similar, not only in terms of the dialog activities, but also in topic. Using proximity in this space as an indicator of similarity, we built support for a query-by-example function. Searchers were happy to use this function, and it provided value on a large testset. Prosody-based retrieval did not perform as well as word-based retrieval, but the two sources of information were often non-redundant and in combination they sometimes performed better than either separately. We thank Martha Larson, Alejandro Vega, Steve Renals, Khiet Truong, Olac Fuentes, David Novick, Shreyas Karkhedkar, Luis F. Vyhledávání informací a navigace v audiovizuálních archívech

The thesis probes issues associated with interactive audio and video retrieval of relevant segments. Text-based methods for search in audio-visual archives using automatic transcripts, subtitles and metadata are first described. Search quality is analyzed with respect to video segmentation methods. Navigation using multimodal hyperlinks between video segments is then examined as well as methods for automatic detection of the most informative anchoring segments suitable for subsequent hyperlinking application. The described text-based search, hyperlinking and anchoring methods are finally presented in working form through their incorporation in an online graphical user interface.Ústav formální a aplikované lingvistikyInstitute of Formal and Applied LinguisticsMatematicko-fyzikální fakultaFaculty of Mathematics and Physic

This work studies antenna noise temperature computation.
