A DISTRIBUTIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE COSTS OF FOODBORNE ILLNESS: WHO ULTIMATELY PAYS?
This paper traces the economic impact of the costs of foodborne illness on the U.S. economy using a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) framework. Previous estimates of the costs of seven foodborne pathogens are disaggregated by type, and distributed across the population using data from the National Health Interview Survey. Initial income losses resulting from premature death cause a decrease in economic activity. Medical costs, in contrast, result in economic growth, though this growth does not outweigh the total costs of premature death. A SAM accounting of how the costs of illness are diffused through the economy provides useful information for policy makers.Cost of illness, Foodborne illness, Social Accounting Matrix, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,
Large Parameter Cases of the Gauss Hypergeometric Function
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the Gauss hypergeometric function
when several of the parameters a, b, c are large. We indicate which cases are
of interest for orthogonal polynomials (Jacobi, but also Krawtchouk, Meixner,
etc.), which results are already available and which cases need more attention.
We also consider a few examples of 3F2-functions of unit argument, to explain
which difficulties arise in these cases, when standard integrals or
differential equations are not available.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
Implications of conservation equations for the determination of absolute velocities
The consequences of assuming that density is conserved in the problem of determining absolute velocities are investigated. Two questions are considered: (i) the constraints that the density must satisfy to be compatible with the assumed geostrophic and hydrostatic dynamics and (ii) whether and to what extent the indeterminacy in this dynamics is removed by this additional assumption
PERENCANAAN STRATEGIS SISTEM INFORMASI PADA PT. ANDIKA PRATAMA SATYA DENGAN METODE WARD AND PEPPARD
PT. Andika Pratama Satya merupakan perusahaan distribusi agen suku cadang mesin
alat-alat berat. PT. Andika Pratama Satya memiliki beberapa SI/TI tetapi belum memiliki
Tunneling in two dimensional QCD
The spectral density for two dimensional continuum QCD has a non-analytic
behavior for a critical area. Apparently this is not reflected in the Wilson
loops. However, we show that the existence of a critical area is encoded in the
winding Wilson loops: Although there is no non-analyticity or phase transition
in these Wilson loops, the dynamics of these loops consists of two smoothly
connected domains separated by the critical area, one domain with a confining
behavior for large winding Wilson loops, and one (below the critical size)
where the string tension disappears. We show that this can be interpreted in
terms of a simple tunneling process between an ordered and a disordered state.
In view of recent results by Narayanan and Neuberger this tunneling may also be
relevant for four dimensional QCD.Comment: 10 pages. Clarifying remarks have been adde
Enzyme kinetics for a two-step enzymic reaction with comparable initial enzyme-substrate ratios
We extend the validity of the quasi-steady state assumption for a model double intermediate enzyme-substrate reaction to include the case where the ratio of initial enzyme to substrate concentration is not necessarily small. Simple analytical solutions are obtained when the reaction rates and the initial substrate concentration satisfy a certain condition. These analytical solutions compare favourably with numerical solutions of the full system of differential equations describing the reaction. Experimental methods are suggested which might permit the application of the quasi-steady state assumption to reactions where it may not have been obviously applicable before
