    Impact of high frequency waves on the ocean altimeter range bias

    New aircraft observations are presented on the range determination error in satellite altimetry associated with ocean waves. Laser-based measurements of the cross correlation between the gravity wave slope and elevation are reported for the first time. These observations provide direct access to a long, O(10 m), gravity wave statistic central to nonlinear wave theory prediction of the altimeter sea state bias. Coincident Ka-band radar scattering data are used to estimate an electromagnetic (EM) range bias analogous to that in satellite altimetry. These data, along with ancillary wind and wave slope variance estimates, are used alongside existing theory to evaluate the extent of long- versus short-wave, O(cm), control of the bias. The longer wave bias contribution to the total EM bias is shown to range from 25 to as much as 100%. Moreover, on average the term is linearly related to wind speed and to the gravity wave slope variance, consistent with WNL theory. The EM bias associated with interactions between long and short waves is obtained assuming the effect is additive to the independently observed long-wave factor. This second component is also a substantial contributor, is observed to be quadratic in wind speed or wave slope, and dominates at moderate wind speeds. The behavior is shown to be consistent with EM bias prediction based in hydrodynamic modulation theory. Study implications for improved correction of the on-orbit satellite sea state bias are discussed

    The GNSS-R Eddy Experiment II: L-band and Optical Speculometry for Directional Sea-Roughness Retrieval from Low Altitude Aircraft

    We report on the retrieval of directional sea-roughness (the full directional mean square slope, including MSS, direction and isotropy) through inversion of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflections (GNSS-R) and SOlar REflectance Speculometry (SORES)data collected during an experimental flight at 1000 m. The emphasis is on the utilization of the entire Delay-Doppler Map (for GNSS-R) or Tilt Azimuth Map (for SORES) in order to infer these directional parameters.     Presenting the Rain-Sea Interaction Facility

    The new Rain-Sea Interaction Facility (RSIF) was established at GSFC/WFF and the first finds are presented. The unique feature of this laboratory is the ability to systematically study microwave scattering from a water surface roughened by artificial rain, for which the droplets are at terminal velocity. The fundamental instruments and systems (e.g., the rain simulator, scatterometers, and surface elevation probes) were installed and evaluated during these first experiments - so the majority of the data were obtained with the rain simulator at 1 m above the water tank. From these initial experiments, three new models were proposed: the square-root function for NCS vs. R, the log Gaussian model for ring-wave elevation frequency spectrum, and the Erland probability density distribution for back scattered power. Rain rate is the main input for these models, although the coefficients may be dependent upon other factors (drop-size distribution, fall velocity, radar configuration, etc.). The facility is functional and we foresee collaborative studies with investigators who are engaged in measuring and modeling rain-sea interaction processes

    Sea state monitoring using coastal GNSS-R

    We report on a coastal experiment to study GPS L1 reflections. The campaign was carried out at the Barcelona Port breaker and dedicated to the development of sea-state retrieval algorithms. An experimental system built for this purpose collected and processed GPS data to automatically generate a times series of the interferometric complex field (ICF). The ICF was analyzed off line and compared to a simple developed model that relates ICF coherence time to the ratio of significant wave height (SWH) and mean wave period (MWP). The analysis using this model showed good consistency between the ICF coherence time and nearby oceanographic buoy data. Based on this result, preliminary conclusions are drawn on the potential of coastal GNSS-R for sea state monitoring using semi-empirical modeling to relate GNSS-R ICF coherence time to SWH.Comment: All Starlab authors have contributed significantly; the Starlab author list has been ordered randomly.     The Eddy Experiment: accurate GNSS-R ocean altimetry from low altitude aircraft

    During the Eddy Experiment, two synchronous GPS receivers were flown at 1 km altitude to collect L1 signals and their reflections from the sea surface for assessment of altimetric precision and accuracy. Wind speed (U10) was around 10 m/s, and SWH up to 2 m. A geophysical parametric waveform model was used for retracking and estimation of the lapse between the direct and reflected signals with a 1-second precision of 3 m. The lapse was used to estimate the SSH along the track using a differential model. The RMS error of the 20 km averaged GNSS-R absolute altimetric solution with respect to Jason-1 SSH and a GPS buoy measurement was of 10 cm, with a 2 cm mean difference. Multipath and retracking parameter sensitivity due to the low altitude are suspected to have degraded accuracy.     A time-Frequency Application with the Stokes-Woodward technique

    In a recent paper, we have generalized Woodward's theorem and applied it to the case of random signals jointly modulated in amplitude and frequency. This generalization yields a new spectral technique to estimate the amount of energy due to mode coupling without calling for higher-order statistics. Two power spectra are detected; the first is related to the independent modes and the second contains extra energy caused by mode coupling. This detection is now extended from frequency to timefrequency domain. A comparison between a wavelet transform and our time-frequency technique shows good agreement along with new insight into the time occurrence of the nonlinearities or mode coupling. Application to water surface waves is given in this letter as an example

    Improving the altimetric rain record from Jason-1 & Jason-2

    Dual-frequency rain-flagging has long been a standard part of altimetric data analysis, both for quality control of the data and for the study of rain itself, because altimeters can provide a finer spatial sampling of rain than can passive microwave instruments. However, there have been many varied implementations, using different records of the surface backscatter and different thresholds. This paper compares four different measures available for the recently-launched Jason-2. The evaluation compares these measures against clearly desired properties, finding that in most cases the adjusted backscatter and that from the ice retracker perform much better than that recommended in the users' handbook. The adjusted backscatter measure also provides a much better link to observations from Jason-1, opening up a much longer period for consistent rain investigations, and enabling greatly improved analysis of the short-scale variability of precipitation. Initial analysis shows that although the spatial and temporal gradients of backscatter increase at very low winds, the spatial gradients in rain attenuation are concentrated where rainfall is greatest, whilst the temporal changes have a simple broad latitudinal pattern

    Effects of integration time on in-water radiometric profiles

    This work investigates the effects of integration time on in-water downward irradiance E-d, upward irradiance E-u and upwelling radiance L-u profile data acquired with free-fall hyperspectral systems. Analyzed quantities are the subsurface value and the diffuse attenuation coefficient derived by applying linear and non-linear regression schemes. Case studies include oligotrophic waters (Case-1), as well as waters dominated by colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and non-algal particles (NAP). Assuming a 24-bit digitization, measurements resulting from the accumulation of photons over integration times varying between 8 and 2048ms are evaluated at depths corresponding to: 1) the beginning of each integration interval (FST); 2) the end of each integration interval (LST); 3) the averages of FST and LST values (AVG); and finally 4) the values weighted accounting for the diffuse attenuation coefficient of water (WGT). Statistical figures show that the effects of integration time can bias results well above 5% as a function of the depth definition. Results indicate the validity of the WGT depth definition and the fair applicability of the AVG one. Instead, both the FST and LST depths should not be adopted since they may introduce pronounced biases in E-u and L-u regression products for highly absorbing waters. Finally, the study reconfirms the relevance of combining multiple radiometric casts into a single profile to increase precision of regression products.     Two-Scale Kirchhoff Theory: Comparison of Experimental Observations With Theoretical Prediction

    We introduce a non-perturbative two scale Kirchhoff theory, in the context of light scattering by a rough surface. This is a two scale theory which considers the roughness both in the wavelength scale (small scale) and in the scales much larger than the wavelength of the incident light (large scale). The theory can precisely explain the small peaks which appear at certain scattering angles. These peaks can not be explained by one scale theories. The theory was assessed by calculating the light scattering profiles using the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) images, as well as surface profilometer scans of a rough surface, and comparing the results with experiments. The theory is in good agreement with the experimental results.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
