    The flux ratio of the [OIII] 5007,4959 lines in AGN: Comparison with theoretical calculations

    By taking into account relativistic corrections to the magnetic dipole operator, the theoretical [OIII] 5006.843/4958.511 line intensity ratio of 2.98 is obtained. In order to check this new value using AGN spectra we present the measurements of the flux ratio of the [OIII] 4959,5007 emission lines for a sample of 62 AGN, obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Database and from published observations. We select only high signal-to-noise ratio spectra for which the line shapes of the [OIII] 4959,5007 lines are the same. We obtained an averaged flux ratio of 2.993 +/- 0.014, which is in a good agreement with the theoretical one.Comment: Accepted for publication in the MNRA

    Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Traumatic Brain Injury: Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms

    Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are among the leading causes of death and chronic disability worldwide. TBI is a complex process encompassing primary injury to the brain tissue and cerebral vasculature induced by the initial impact, secondary injury, including cascade of subsequent neuroinflammatory processes, and regenerative responses with enhanced neurogenesis and angiogenesis. To date, there remains no approved pharmacological therapy that is able to prevent the secondary injury. Therefore, the development of safe and efficacious neuroprotective treatments currently represents the greatest unmet need in the management of TBI. Increasing number of experimental and clinical studies present convincing evidence that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), as an adjunctive therapy, may be the suitable neurotherapeutic method for improving neurological outcome after TBI. Irrespective to treatment protocol HBOT appeared to alleviate the detrimental and neurotoxic effects of pathological sequel initiated by TBI and to stimulate endogenous reparative mechanisms. However, the exact mechanisms by which HBOT exerts its beneficial effects on recovery after brain injury are still deficient. In this review we will summarize up to date results of HBOT in experimental and clinical TBI and try to put more light on cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying beneficial effects of HBOT on functional recovery after brain injury

    Observer-based networked control for continuous-time systems with random sensor delays

A design scheme for the observer-based output feedback controller is proposed to render the closed-loop networked system exponentially mean-square stable with H∞ performance requirement. The technique employed is based on appropriate delay systems approach combined with a matrix variable decoupling technique. The design method is fulfilled through solving linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is used to verify the effectiveness and the merits of the present results.This paper was not presented at any IFAC meeting.     This SINTA Project establish a scientific cooperation between the Italian Scientific Institution INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) and the Serbian Scientific Institutions such as the Republic HydroMeteorological Service (RHMSS) and the University of Belgrade (UB). INGV contributes the global models, University of Belgrade and RHMSS contribute their expertise on regional models, parameterization ofphysical processes and numerical schemes. In particular, the main objectives of this Project are: 1) Perform a set of global simulations with a Global Climate Model (GCM) available at INGV; 2) Perform a set of regional simulations with the UB Regional Climate Model (RCM) forced by boundary conditions from the GCM simulations; 3) Test the convection parameterization developed at UB in the INGV global model; 4) Training and visit exchanges of Serbian scientists in Italy

    Spin-Orbit Pendulum: the Microscopic Stern-Gerlach Effect

    The motion of a particle with a spin in spherical harmonic oscillator potential with spin-orbit interaction is studied. We have focus our attention on spatial motion of wave packets, giving a description complementary to motion of spin discussed already in [1]. The particular initial conditions studied here lead to the most transparent formulas and can be treated analytically. A strong analogy with the Stern-Gerlach experiment is suggested.     Joint co-clustering: co-clustering of genomic and clinical bioimaging data

    AbstractFor better understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying clinical observations, and better defining a group of potential candidates for protein-family-inhibiting therapy, it is interesting to determine the correlations between genomic, clinical data and data coming from high resolution and fluorescent microscopy. We introduce a computational method, called joint co-clustering, that can find co-clusters or groups of genes, bioimaging parameters and clinical traits that are believed to be closely related to each other based on the given empirical information. As bioimaging parameters, we quantify the expression of growth factor receptor EGFR/erb-B family in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) through a fully-automated computer-aided analysis approach. This immunohistochemical analysis is usually performed by pathologists via visual inspection of tissue samples images. Our fully-automated techniques streamlines this error-prone and time-consuming process, thereby facilitating analysis and diagnosis. Experimental results for several real-life datasets demonstrate the high quantitative precision of our approach. The joint co-clustering method was tested with the receptor EGFR/erb-B family data on non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) tissue and identified statistically significant co-clusters of genes, receptor protein expression and clinical traits. The validation of our results with the literature suggest that the proposed method can provide biologically meaningful co-clusters of genes and traits and that it is a very promising approach to analyse large-scale biological data and to study multi-factorial genetic pathologies through their genetic alterations

    Near complete response after single dose of nivolumab in patient with advanced heavily pre-treated KRAS mutant pulmonary adenocarcinoma

    The programmed death 1 (PD-1) receptor is expressed by activated T-cells and engaged by ligands PD-L1 and PD-L2 normally expressed by infiltrating immune cells in response to viral infection. The PD-1/PD-L1 axis is a negative inhibitory pathway that down-regulates T-cells but is also used by tumors to evade anti-tumor immunity. Antibodies targeting PD-1/PD-L1 axis are capable of restoring functional anti-tumor immunity and have demonstrated efficacy in a broad range of tumor types including non-small cell lung cancer in both squamous and adenocarcinoma histologies. Ongoing issues affecting clinical development of these agents include assessment of response, optimal duration of therapy in excellent responders, predictive biomarkers and mechanisms of resistance. In this report, we describe a patient with advanced KRAS mutant heavily pretreated pulmonary adenocarcinoma who developed an excellent response after a single-dose of nivolumab. Pre-treatment tumor was found to have moderate CD3 and PD-L1 positivity by immunohistochemical staining. Evaluation of exceptional responders and non-responders are critical to furthering our understanding of the mechanisms of action (and resistance) to these agents
