    A magnetic barrier in confined two-dimensional electron gases: Nanomagnetometers and magnetic switches

    We investigate the conductance properties of a hybrid ferromagnet-semiconductor structure consisting of a confined two-dimensional electron gas and a transverse ferromagnetic strip on top. Within the framework of the Landauer-B\"uttiker model, we develop an alternative way to consider magnetic fields. Our method describes devices ranging from a recently realized nanomagnetometer down to quasi one-dimensional quantum wires. We provide a rigorous way to relate the measured resistance to the actual magnetization of the strip. Regarding the quasi one-dimensional wires we propose a new device application, a tunable magnetic switch.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures included, to be published in Applied Physics Letter

    The title compound, C2H2·C12H24O6·2NH3, was formed by co-crystallization of 18-crown-6 and acetylene in liquid ammonia. The 18-crown-6 molecule has threefold rotoinversion symmetry. The acteylene molecule lies on the threefold axis and the whole molecule is generated by an inversion center. The two ammonia molecules are also located on the threefold axis and are related by inversion symmetry. In the crystal, the ammonia molecules are located below and above the crown ether plane and are connected by intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen bonds. The acetylene molecules are additionally linked by weak C-H...N interactions into chains that propagate in the direction of the crystallographic c axis.     Development of Novel Density Functionals for Thermochemical Kinetics

    A new density functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation functional for the exploration of reaction mechanisms is proposed. This new functional, denoted BMK (Boese-Martin for Kinetics), has an accuracy in the 2 kcal/mol range for transition state barriers but, unlike previous attempts at such a functional, this improved accuracy does not come at the expense of equilibrium properties. This makes it a general-purpose functional whose domain of applicability has been extended to transition states, rather than a specialized functional for kinetics. The improvement in BMK rests on the inclusion of the kinetic energy density together with a large value of the exact exchange mixing coefficient. For this functional, the kinetic energy density appears to correct `back' the excess exact exchange mixing for ground-state properties, possibly simulating variable exchange.Comment: J. Chem.     Assessment of Various Density Functionals and Basis Sets for the Calculation of Molecular Anharmonic Force Fields

    In a previous contribution (Mol. Phys. {\bf 103}, xxxx, 2005), we established the suitability of density functional theory (DFT) for the calculation of molecular anharmonic force fields. In the present work, we have assessed a wide variety of basis sets and exchange-correlation functionals for harmonic and fundamental frequencies, equilibrium and ground-state rotational constants, and thermodynamic functions beyond the RRHO (rigid rotor-harmonic oscillator) approximation. The fairly good performance of double-zeta plus polarization basis sets for frequencies results from an error compensation between basis set incompleteness and the intrinsic error of exchange-correlation functionals. Triple-zeta plus polarization basis sets are recommended, with an additional high-exponent dd function on second-row atoms. All conventional hybrid GGA functionals perform about equally well: high-exchange hybrid GGA and meta-GGA functionals designed for kinetics yield poor results, with the exception of of the very recently developed BMK functional which takes a middle position along with the HCTH/407 (second generation GGA) and TPSS (meta-GGA) functionals.     Arsenic Geochemistry in Warm Spring Ponds: New Field and Experimental Results

    Silver Bow Creek (SBC) flows into the Warm Springs Ponds Operable Unit (WSPOU), where various containment cells are used to precipitate copper and other metals (e.g., Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn). Lime is added seasonally to increase the pH and assist in removal of metals from the water column. Although the WSPOU is effective at removing copper and other cationic trace metals, concentrations of dissolved arsenic exiting the facility are often above the site specific standard, 20 20 ug/L, during low-flow periods each summer and fall. This thesis is a continuation of arsenic geochemistry studies by Montana Tech in the WSPOU. Field work focused on Pond 3, the largest and first in the series of treatment ponds. Shallow groundwater was sampled from 8 PVC piezometers located near the south end of Pond 3. Three sediment pore-water diffusion samplers (“peepers”) were also deployed at the south end of Pond 3 to examine vertical gradients in chemistry in the top 25 cm of the pond sediment. In general, the pH and Eh values of the shallow groundwater and sediment pore-water were less than in the pond water. Concentrations of arsenic were generally higher in subsurface water, and tended to pass through a maximum (up to 530 g/L) about 10 cm below the sediment-water interface. In the peeper cells, there was a strong positive correlation between dissolved As and dissolved Fe, and an inverse correlation with sulfate. Therefore, the zone of arsenic release corresponds to a zone of bacterial Fe and sulfate reduction in the shallow, organic-rich sediment. Redox speciation of arsenic shows that arsenate (As(V)) is dominant in the pond, and arsenite (As(III)) is dominant in the subsurface water. A series of laboratory experiments with pH adjustment were completed using SBC water collected near the inlet to the WSPOU as well as water and shallow sediment collected from Pond 3. Water ± sediment mesocosms were set up in 1-L Nalgene bottles (closed system) or a 20-L aquarium (open system), both with continuous stirring. The pH of the mesocosm was adjusted by addition of NaOH or HNO3 acid. The closed system provided better pH control since the water was not in contact with the atmosphere, which prevented exchange of carbon dioxide. In both the closed and open systems, dissolved arsenic concentrations either decreased or stayed roughly the same with increase in pH to values \u3e 11. Therefore, the release of dissolved As into the treatment ponds in low-flow periods is not due to changes in pH alone. All of these results support the hypothesis that the arsenic release in WSPOU is linked to microbial reduction of ferric oxide minerals in the organic-rich sediment. Upwards diffusion of dissolved As from the sediment pore-water into the pond water is the most likely explanation for the increase in As concentration of the WSPOU in low-flow periods

    Evaluating Simulated Military Training Exercises

    The Joint Kill Chain Event (JKCE), designed by the Air Forces Distributed Mission Operations Center (DMOC), provides an interesting case study for evaluation of simulated military training. JKCE places Army Air Defense Artillery Fire Control Officers (ADAFCOs) into an Air Force Control and Reporting Center (CRC) simulator. From the CRC, the ADAFCO leads an air missile defense scenario, protecting friendly assets (airfields, bases, missile launchers, etc.) and coordinating surface-to-air missile strikes. This scenario serves as the operational capstone event in the Army\u27s ADAFCO certification course, which qualifies officers to perform a vital missile authorization function in major combat operations. The current course configuration consists of two weeks of classroom-based academics followed by one week of simulator practice and testing. The didactic portion of the course is designed to teach the students those skills required of an operational ADAFCO. The simulator-based portion of the course, JKCE, tests those new skills in a simulated operational environment. However, this analysis reveals major testing inconsistencies and statistically significant practice effects during JKCE. Additionally, the didactic portion of the course proved incapable of generating the desired operational result, successful completion of JKCE. Changes to the structure and implementation of JKCE could improve this program, by shifting focus toward desired outcomes. In this thesis, I develop relevant performance metrics for JKCE, capture and analyze those metrics, and finally provide recommendations for course improvement, based on empirical evidence and program evaluation best practices
