Designed metallopeptides as tools in Chemical Biology

A series of Ru(II) metallopeptides featuring the dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine ligand (dppz) have been synthesized through solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) methods. Spectroscopic studies indicate that functionalization with an oligoarginine basic tail causes a drastic change in the binding mode and a great increase of the affinity of these metallopeptides for well-matched B-DNA oligonucleotides over mismacthed DNAs. In addition, the spectroscopic data suggest that both the oligoarginine functionalization and the nature of the ancillary ligands do not cause an increase of the selectivity of these metallopeptides for a particular type of mismatched DNA oligonucleotide. Finally, fluorescence microscopy studies indicate that the oligoarginine functionalization causes the efficient internalization of the metallopeptides into Vero cells, causing apoptotic cell death after a few hours

Voskopoja and Ioannina, two advanced centers of the European Enlightenment in the Ottoman West

This paper considers the impact of Enlightenment ideals before and during the Movement of the New Greek National Ideology during the 17th to 19th centuries. It is about Ioannina and Voskopoja, located today respectively in northwestern Greece and in southeastern Albania. In both centers, education was central to the spread of Western Enlightenment values, and attempts to communicate across the languages of the region were the main key. Voskopoja is a typical case of the flourishing of Enlightenment values in the service of economic and cultural development. With its defining basis of Hellenic culture, and its emphasis on secular knowledge, the purpose of education was ‘enlightening’ the hearts and minds of the Balkan peoples, seen as the only way to overthrow the Ottoman Empire. The ideological platform promoted in Ioannina, and on behalf of Greek nationalism, served as the basis for the platform of the Albanian national ideology

Pseudo-gravity interpretation of high-resolution aeromagnetic data over northern Bida basin and environs, North-Central Nigeria: implication for mineral exploration

In view of the ongoing interest of the Federal Government of Nigeria to diversify the country’s economy by moving away from dependence on fossil fuel to solid mineral sector; this research work was carried out to map potential areas of mineralization within the northern sector of Bida basin and environs. High resolution aeromagnetic data over the study area was subjected to regional residual separation, pseudo-gravity transformation and CET structural analysis using Oasis Montaj software. Result of the pseudo-gravity transformation showed anomalies ranging from -0.14 to 0.15 milligals. High density anomalies ranging from 0.11 to 0.15 milligals, observed in areas around Tegina, Kagara, Bako, Pandogari, Gurmana, Kuta, Bida, Wuya and Jima have been interpreted as mineralized zones. The lineament map revealed a major structural feature trending in the NNE-SSW direction cutting across Tegina, Kagara, Bako and Pandogari. This structural feature has shaded more light on the relationship between geologic structures and deposit of interest in the study area. Therefore, the NNE-SSW structural trend of anomalies within these zones depicts structurally controlled mineralization and is conformable with the NNE-SSW general trend of the Nigerian Schist belts. A ground truthing exercise over an extension of one of the anomalies at Anguwan Dorawa, southwest of Tegina town lead to the discovery of a gold mining site where mineralization is hosted within the schist phyllite and quartzite veins

Assessment of Bifidobacterium Pseudocatenulatum G4 as A Probiotic

This study has demonstrated the probiotic criteria of Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum G4 related to safety profile; effects on intestinal microbiota; interactions with prebiotics; and the growth in peanut milk (PM) and survivability during the storage. The safety profile of the strain G4 was evaluated in groups of BALB/c mice, fed different concentrations of Bifidobacterium strains for a period of 28 days. At the end of the experimental period, the highest dose of 11 log CFU B. pseudocatenulatum G4 /day did not affect the general health of mice nor cause any toxicity to blood based on biochemistry and haematology measurements. Pathogenicity symptoms were not detected in the internal organs; serum enzymes of liver and kidney; and histology of ceacum, ileum and colon of the treated mice; thus, the strain G4 could be a safe probiotic for food application. The effects of feeding strain G4 on selected microbiota community and metabolic activity in ceacum and colon of rats were also examined in 30 days feeding trail. The rat groups received skim milk contained either viable or metabolic product of B. pseudocatenulatum G4. The viable supplement of strain G4 increased profile of bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus and total anaerobes in ceacum and colon of the fed rats; while it decreased total aerobes and potential pathogens (staphylococcus, enterococcus and enterobacteriacea) of the same intestinal regions. However, salmonella and coliform were maintained mostly unchanged. In addition, the viable supplement of strain G4 has significantly (p 7 log CFU CFU/ml fermented PM products. Therefore, B. pseudocatenulatum G4 assessed to be a safe probiotic microorganism for synbiotics formulation with FOS and incorporation into peanut milk (PM) for delivery purposes
