The aims of this document are the description of the procedures adopted to assess the quality of the data hosted on the JRC data management system and the quality of the data itself. The main aim of the data management platform is to provide data to the users in the project, in particular to case studies partners. Other aims are to provide a long term storage and web hosting to the data provided by partners and legacy data. Finally the data collected during the project will be made available to external users after the end of the project itself. Thus ensuring that the data hosted meets the highest quality standards is critical for the data management system. This document is divided into chapters that can be briefly described as follows: • Chapter 1: Description of the WP10 and the tasks that should be fulfilled • Chapter 2: Description of the procedures adopted to assess data quality • Chapter 3: Description Results of the data quality check for the hosted data • Chapter 4: Technical description of the metadata and data consistencyJRC.D.3-Land Resource

Fil: Ballabio, Marcela.Fil: Reyes, Malena Lucía

Serotonin and Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors Improve Micturition Control in Mice

Poor micturition control may cause profound distress, because proper voiding is mandatory for an active social life. Micturition results from the subtle interplay of central and peripheral components. It involves the coordination of autonomic and neuromuscular activity at the brainstem level, under the executive control of the prefrontal cortex. We tested the hypothe- sis that administration of molecules acting as reuptake inhibitors of serotonin, noradrenaline or both may exert a strong effect on the control of urine release, in a mouse model of overac- tive bladder. Mice were injected with cyclophosphamide (40 mg/kg), to increase micturition acts. Mice were then given one of four molecules: the serotonin reuptake inhibitor imipra- mine, its metabolite desipramine that acts on noradrenaline reuptake, the serotonin and nor- adrenaline reuptake inhibitor duloxetine or its active metabolite 4-hydroxy-duloxetine. Cyclophosphamide increased urine release without inducing overt toxicity or inflammation, except for increase in urothelium thickness. All the antidepressants were able to decrease the cyclophosphamide effects, as apparent from longer latency to the first micturition act, decreased number of urine spots and volume of released urine. These results suggest that serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors exert a strong and effective modulatory ef- fect on the control of urine release and prompt to additional studies on their central effects on brain areas involved in the social and behavioral control of micturition

Objective of present paper is the evaluation of the implementation stage of territorial management policies and land use planning in Mendoza. For this study case we have made a descriptive, formative, procedural and intermediate evaluation focusing on three dimensions: 1) The distance between what is ruled and what is done in fact 2) Implementation from the point of view of decision makers, 3) Search of agreement and civil participation. As a result we observe that policies lost efficiency mainly when conflict appears in the relation between organisms involved in rules application. We can also say that a gap exists in the processes of implementation characterized by low skill in coordinating and establishing priorities; with duplication of tasks and functions; a delay in the adoption of policies; discontinuous and heterogeneous participation of actors and high dependence of organisms «Secretaría de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sustentable».Fil: Ballabio, Alicia Marcela. Copyright @ 2012 John Wiley & SonsThe miRNA expression profiles of skin biopsies from 14 primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (C-ALCL) patients were analysed with miRNA microarrays using the same control group of 12 benign inflammatory dermatoses (BID) as previously used to study the miRNA expression profile of tumor-stage mycosis fungoides (MF). We identified 13 differentially expressed miRNAs between C-ALCL and BID. The up-regulation of miR-155, miR-27b, miR-30c and miR-29b in C-ALCL was validated by miRNA-Q-PCR on independent study groups. Additionally, the miRNA expression profiles of C-ALCL were compared with those of tumor-stage MF. Although miRNA microarray analysis did not identify statistically significant differentially expressed miRNAs, miRNA-Q-PCR demonstrated statistically significantly differential expression of miR-155, miR-27b, miR-93, miR-29b and miR-92a between tumor-stage MF and C-ALCL. This study, the first describing the miRNA expression profile of C-ALCL, reveals differences with tumor-stage MF, suggesting a different contribution to the pathogenesis of these lymphomas. This work was funded by grants from Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) (MHV) and the Fondation Rene´ Touraine (MvK), and grants from the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research (EB) and the Julian Starmer-Smith Memorial Fund (CHL)

Mid-infrared intersubband absorption from p-Ge quantum wells grown on Si substrates

    Get PDF
Mid-infrared intersubband absorption from p-Ge quantum wells with Si0.5Ge0.5 barriers grown on a Si substrate is demonstrated from 6 to 9 μm wavelength at room temperature and can be tuned by adjusting the quantum well thickness. Fourier transform infra-red transmission and photoluminescence measurements demonstrate clear absorption peaks corresponding to intersubband transitions among confined hole states. The work indicates an approach that will allow quantum well intersubband photodetectors to be realized on Si substrates in the important atmospheric transmission window of 8–13 μm

    Welcome to PathoGenetics

Disease gene identification has made enormous strides in the past twenty years through functional, positional and candidate gene approaches, and more recently by the exploitation of genome-wide strategies. However, although pathogenic mutations in over 2000 genes have been identified as causative of human diseases, much less is known about the relationship between the molecular defects and mechanisms that lead to disease pathology and symptoms. Recent advances in diverse fields such as genomics, proteomics, cell biology, as well as studies on transgenic animals have greatly accelerated our understanding of the biochemical and cellular basis of many diseases but much still remains to be discovered. The current challenge is to understand the molecular and metabolic pathways by which a particular pathogenic variation leads to a specific phenotype. The study of abnormal conditions is of crucial importance for the understanding of normal physiology and often provides us with the rationale for the development of novel therapeutic strategies
