UNH Undergraduate Students’ Attitudes toward Bisexuality

    Get PDF
Although many studies primarily discuss gay men and lesbian women, very few have focused on the bisexual population. The few previous studies conducted about bisexuality show that many people have negative attitudes toward bisexuality. This study examines the effects of gender and sexual orientation on attitudes toward bisexuality. 378 students at the University of New Hampshire took surveys asking whether they believed bisexuality was a legitimate sexual orientation. The data showed no statistically significant differences in attitudes between men, women, or other sexual orientations. However, the majority of students in general believed that bisexuality is a legitimate sexual orientation. Another large portion had “neutral” attitudes, suggesting a lack of knowledge about the bisexual population, demonstrating a reluctance to formulate opinions about them. Further research on larger and more diverse samples is still necessary to more accurately measure attitudes toward bisexuality

Water-Assisted Synthesis of Next Generation 2D Materials for Energy Storage

Over the years, various nanomaterials are continuously researched and synthesised to improve energy storage devices' energy and power densities. Two-Dimensional (2D) materials have developed great interest as a new prototype in materials science due to their collective advantages of ultrathin thickness and tuneable physical and chemical properties. The application of these nanomaterials extends to energy storage, water purification, catalysis, biosensors, antibacterial films, and coatings, thereby prompting the development of viable techniques for synthesising nanomaterials. However, challenges of further size reduction of nanomaterials with a simultaneous low cost, scalable and reproducible synthesis approach remain famous for sustainable progress in their practical applications. For the first time, 2D Graphene and MXene composite materials were synthesised through a Continuous Hydrothermal Flow Synthesis (CHFS) method and engineered into electrodes for electrochemical energy storage applications. CHFS is a single-step hydrothermal process involving mixing supercritical water (374 °C, 22.4 MPa) with a flow of water-soluble precursors in a reactor to obtain a rapid and controlled synthesis of nanomaterials. This synthesis method is scalable and tuneable by controlling process parameters such as flow rate, temperature, and pressure, thereby impacting the particle size, morphology, and crystal structure of nanoparticles. In addition, CHFS limits the use of toxic reagents and produces nanomaterials with desired properties in minimal time (seconds). One of the findings in this research paves way for the in-situ production and aqueous processing of functionalised MXene composites with a high electrochemical performance. Through aqueous dispersions as a green route of synthesis in CHFS, these 2D MXene and graphene derivatives were produced with enhanced electrochemical properties. This research provides a significant contribution to the expanding portfolio of continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis reactions. In this thesis, a variety of materials such as manganese (iv) oxide, manganese (iv) oxide/reduced graphene oxide (rGO), titanium (iv) oxide, titanium (iv) oxide/ reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and N-doped MXene/ titanium (iv) oxide, are hydrothermally synthesised via CHFS, developed and fabricated into electrode materials for energy storage applications. The in-depth analysis provides a comprehensive insight into how nanocomposites of promising energy storage properties are designable, made functional, and synthesised in-situ hydrothermally via CHFS from non-toxic and water-soluble precursors while delivering excellent electrochemical performance when used as electrodes in batteries

    Get PDF
Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoitus oli selvittää palvelutalo Mainio Vire Salmenkalliossa asuvien ikääntyneiden ravitsemustila ja D-vitamiinilisän käyttö. Tavoitteena oli tuottaa tietoa, jota voidaan hyödyntää palvelutalon asukkaiden ravitsemuksen suunnittelussa, toteutuksessa ja arvioinnissa. Tutkimus toteutettiin kvantitatiivista tutkimusmenetelmää käyttäen. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin tätä tutkimusta varten tehdyllä strukturoidulla kyselylomakkeella ja Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) -testillä. MNA-testi on monessa maassa validoitu kysymyssarja yli 65-vuotiaiden ikäihmisten ravitsemustilan selvittämiseen. Tutkimukseen osallistui 14 palvetulo Mainio Vire Salmenkallion yli 65-vuotiasta asukasta. The purpose of this thesis was to clarify the nutritional condition and the use of vitamin D of the elderly residents at Mainio Vire Salmenkallio Sheltered Housing. The objective was to generate information that would be of use when planning, implementing and evaluating residents´ nutrition. The research was carried out using the quantitative research method. The research material for this study was collected with a structured questionnaire designed for this particular study and further with the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) Test. The MNA Test is used in many countries for evaluating nutritional condition with the elderly aged over 65 years. Fourteen residents over 65 years at Mainio Vire Salmenkallio Sheltered Housing participated in the study. The research material was analysed using the Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Program. Research results were scrutinised as percentages and in frequency distribution tables. Based on the research results, nutritional condition of eight survey participants was normal while six participants were at increased risk of false nutrition. None of the participants were undernourished, and eight residents added vitamin D to their nutrition. Four of them (n=8) had 20 micrograms of vitamin D a day, three had 10 micrograms and one had less than 10 micrograms a day. A challenge is issued to conduct continued research in the form of assessing nutritional condition of the elderly and clarifying the addition of vitamin D to nutrition in other service homes. Additionally, it would be of interest to find out about the knowledge of nutrition for the elderly and the factors related to it among the nursing staff. A development proposal is to assess regularly the nutritional condition of service home residents and to introduce a dose of vitamin D to all service home residents

Kandidaatin opinnäytteeni yhdistää itselleni uusia ja jo opittuja tekniikoita. Sovellan aikaisemmin oppimiani maalaustekniikoita yhdessä minulle uuden valamistekniikan avulla tuotettuun esineeseen, kaakeliin. Työni tarkoitus on välittää kaakelin kauneuden mahdollisuuksien olemassaolosta

SMS, one of the most popular and fast-growing GSM value-added services worldwide, has attracted unwanted SMS, also known as SMS spam. The effects of SMS spam are significant as it affects both the users and the service providers, causing a massive gap in trust among both parties. This article presents a deep learning model based on BiLSTM. Further, it compares our results with some of the states of the art machine learning (ML) algorithm on two datasets: our newly collected dataset and the popular UCI SMS dataset. This study aims to evaluate the performance of diverse learning models and compare the result of the new dataset expanded (ExAIS_SMS) using the following metrics the true positive (TP), false positive (FP), F-measure, recall, precision, and overall accuracy. The average accuracy for the BiLSTSM model achieved moderately improved results compared to some of the ML classifiers. The experimental results achieved significant improvement from the ground truth results after effective fine-tuning of some of the parameters. The BiLSTM model using the ExAIS_SMS dataset attained an accuracy of 93.4% and 98.6% for UCI datasets. Further comparison of the two datasets on the state-of-the-art ML classifiers gave an accuracy of Naive Bayes, BayesNet, SOM, decision tree, C4.5, J48 is 89.64%, 91.11%, 88.24%, 75.76%, 80.24%, and 79.2% respectively for ExAIS_SMS datasets. In conclusion, our proposed BiLSTM model showed significant improvement over traditional ML classifiers. To further validate the robustness of our model, we applied the UCI datasets, and our results showed optimal performance while classifying SMS spam messages based on some metrics: accuracy, precision, recall, and F-measure.publishedVersio

As science and society both progress, Supreme Court rulings should reflect those changes. The national consensus has been gradually moving away from the use of the death penalty, particularly as applied to offenders between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five. Research clarifies that the brain is not fully developed in the areas most directly linked to culpability until after this age range. The combination of these factors should compel the Court to raise the minimum age for death sentences, but the shifting bench presents unpredictabilit
