    Survey propagation for the cascading Sourlas code

    We investigate how insights from statistical physics, namely survey propagation, can improve decoding of a particular class of sparse error correcting codes. We show that a recently proposed algorithm, time averaged belief propagation, is in fact intimately linked to a specific survey propagation for which Parisi's replica symmetry breaking parameter is set to zero, and that the latter is always superior to belief propagation in the high connectivity limit. We briefly look at further improvements available by going to the second level of replica symmetry breaking.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    Cluster derivation of Parisi's RSB solution for disordered systems

    We propose a general scheme in which disordered systems are allowed to sacrifice energy equi-partitioning and separate into a hierarchy of ergodic sub-systems (clusters) with different characteristic time-scales and temperatures. The details of the break-up follow from the requirement of stationarity of the entropy of the slower cluster, at every level in the hierarchy. We apply our ideas to the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, and show how the Parisi solution can be {\it derived} quantitatively from plausible physical principles. Our approach gives new insight into the physics behind Parisi's solution and its relations with other theories, numerical experiments, and short range models.Comment: 7 pages 5 figure

    In dit onderzoek is getracht méér duidelijkheid te krijgen over de fysiologische achtergronden van DIF en kouval als alternatieve groeiregulator. Eerder onderzoek naar het meest effectieve tijdstip van kouval heeft laten zien dat het effect van een (kortdurende) temperatuurverlaging varieert in een etmaal, waarbij een samenhang aanwezig lijkt te zijn met zonsondergang. Een mogelijke relatie met de (gehanteerde) belichtingsstrategie is onderzocht in twee experimenten in het seizoen 1993-1994. Voorts is in 1994-1995 in meer detail onderzoek verricht naar het wel of niet aanwezig zijn van een ritme in strekkingsgroei, met daaraan gekoppeld eventuele sturingsmogelijkheden voor de praktijk

    First-principles calculation of the intrinsic aqueous solubility of crystalline druglike molecules

    We demonstrate that the intrinsic aqueous solubility of crystalline druglike molecules can be estimated with reasonable accuracy from sublimation free energies calculated using crystal lattice simulations and hydration free energies calculated using the 3D Reference Interaction Site Model (3D-RISM) of the Integral Equation Theory of Molecular Liquids (IET). The solubilities of 25 crystalline druglike molecules taken from different chemical classes are predicted by the model with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.85 and a root mean square error (RMSE) equal to 1.45 log(10) S units, which is significantly more accurate than results obtained using implicit continuum solvent models. The method is not directly parametrized against experimental solubility data, and it offers a full computational characterization of the thermodynamics of transfer of the drug molecule from crystal phase to gas phase to dilute aqueous solution.PostprintPeer reviewe

    This article explores New York City\u27s non-traditional, judicially based response to prostitution. This article first recounts the history of New York City’s Women’s Court. It then examines the work of the Midtown Community Court, the “problem-solving court” established in 1993 to address criminal issues, like prostitution, in Midtown Manhattan. It also discusses the renewed concerns about sex work in New York and describe the movement, propelled by modern reformers, to address prostitution through specialty courts. It then contrasts the shared features and attributes of the Women’s Court and Midtown Court models. Finally, the article urges modern reformers to step back from the problem-solving court movement and their call for the creation of more such specialized criminal courts

    Survey propagation at finite temperature: application to a Sourlas code as a toy model

    In this paper we investigate a finite temperature generalization of survey propagation, by applying it to the problem of finite temperature decoding of a biased finite connectivity Sourlas code for temperatures lower than the Nishimori temperature. We observe that the result is a shift of the location of the dynamical critical channel noise to larger values than the corresponding dynamical transition for belief propagation, as suggested recently by Migliorini and Saad for LDPC codes. We show how the finite temperature 1-RSB SP gives accurate results in the regime where competing approaches fail to converge or fail to recover the retrieval state
