The thermodynamics of human reaction times

I present a new approach for the interpretation of reaction time (RT) data from behavioral experiments. From a physical perspective, the entropy of the RT distribution provides a model-free estimate of the amount of processing performed by the cognitive system. In this way, the focus is shifted from the conventional interpretation of individual RTs being either long or short, into their distribution being\ud more or less complex in terms of entropy. The new approach enables the estimation of the cognitive processing load without reference to the informational content of the stimuli themselves, thus providing a more appropriate estimate of the cognitive impact of dierent sources of information that are carried by experimental stimuli or tasks. The paper introduces the formulation of the theory, followed by an empirical validation using a database of human RTs in lexical tasks (visual lexical decision and word\ud naming). The results show that this new interpretation of RTs is more powerful than the traditional one. The method provides theoretical estimates of the processing loads elicited by individual stimuli. These loads sharply distinguish the responses from different tasks. In addition, it provides upper-bound estimates for the speed at which the system processes information. Finally, I argue that the theoretical proposal, and the associated empirical evidence, provide strong arguments for an adaptive system that systematically adjusts its operational processing speed to the particular demands of each stimulus. This\ud finding is in contradiction with Hick's law, which posits a relatively constant processing speed within an experimental context

RESPUESTA PRODUCTIVA, DIGESTIBILIDAD DE LOS NUTRIENTES Y PARAMETROS DE FERMENTACION RUMINAL EN OVINOS, RECIBIENDO CLORHIDRATO DE ZILPATEROL

Se evaluó el efecto de Clorhidrato de Zilpaterol, sobre la digestibilidad de los nutrientes en dietas típicas de ovinos finalizados en corral.Seis ovinos de lana (Suffolk x Hampshire) con un peso vivo inicial de 30.6 kg ± 2.6 kg fueron distribuidos en doble cuadro latino 3 x 3 para evaluar el efecto de tres niveles del beta adrenérgico agonista Clorhidrato del Zilpaterol (0, 10 y 20 mg de clorhidrato de zilpaterol/ovino/día) sobre la respuesta productiva, características de la fermentación ruminal y digestibilidad de los nutrientes de una dieta típica para la finalización de ovinos en corral. Cada periodo experimental tuvo una duración de 15 días con 10 de ellos de adaptación a la dieta y 5 para la colección de muestras. Toda la información colectada se analizó mediante análisis de varianza utilizando el procedimiento GLM de paquete estadístico SAS y la diferencia entre medias por la prueba de Tukey. El clorhidrato de zilpaterol no tuvo efecto (P > 0.05) sobre el consumo de materia seca, ganancia diaria de peso o eficiencia alimenticia. Respecto a las variables de fermentación ruminal (pH, concentración de metano, ácido acético, ácido propiónico, ácido butírico y relación acético/propiónico) no se observó efecto (P > 0.05) de tratamientos; la misma respuesta (P > 0.05) se cuantificó para la digestibilidad de los nutrientes (materia seca, materia orgánica, proteína cruda, extracto etéreo, fibra detergente neutro y fibra detergente ácida). Bajo las condiciones que se desarrolló el experimento, el clorhidrato de zilpaterol no modificó las variables productivas, características de fermentación ruminal y digestibilidad de los nutrientes de la dieta evaluada. Se recomienda realizar otra evaluación, donde las unidades experimentales se muestrean al final del periodo recomendado en el uso del clorhidrato de zilpaterol (día 28 al 32 del periodo de dosificación), en virtud de que la rotación de tratamientos en el cuadro latino en la presente investigación pudo haber enmascarado el efecto de los tratamientos sobre las variables respuesta evaluadas.Proyecto Red PROMEP de Cuerpos Académicos “Evaluación productiva y económica del crecimiento y calidad de la carne de ovinos de pelo mediante el uso de un promotor de crecimiento y diferentes niveles de energía en la dieta

Esta comunicación se centrará en la explotación didáctica de las canciones para el desanollo de la competencia tanto cultural como lingüística y comunicativa de los alum- nos de italiano. Information content versus word length in random typing

Recently, it has been claimed that a linear relationship between a measure of information content and word length is expected from word length optimization and it has been shown that this linearity is supported by a strong correlation between information content and word length in many languages (Piantadosi et al. 2011, PNAS 108, 3825-3826). Here, we study in detail some connections between this measure and standard information theory. The relationship between the measure and word length is studied for the popular random typing process where a text is constructed by pressing keys at random from a keyboard containing letters and a space behaving as a word delimiter. Although this random process does not optimize word lengths according to information content, it exhibits a linear relationship between information content and word length. The exact slope and intercept are presented for three major variants of the random typing process. A strong correlation between information content and word length can simply arise from the units making a word (e.g., letters) and not necessarily from the interplay between a word and its context as proposed by Piantadosi et al. In itself, the linear relation does not entail the results of any optimization process

En primer lugar una intención metodológica y teórica: intenta demostrar, en un texto extenso y abierto a varias posibilidades de lectura, que el concepto paradigmático de los niveles isotópicos del texto debe ser sustituido por una nueva concepción de la poesía que tenga en cuenta la organización sintagmática en esos supuestos niveles. El artículo es, en este sentido, una ilustración en paralelo a mi ponencia "La metáfora y la estructura metafórica del texto". En segundo lugar, es también un intento de leer el poema de S. J.Perse desde una perspectiva temática-estructural, pensando en la dinámica metafórica que nos lleva desde desde el campo metafórico de [neige] al de [parole], siendo la lengua la que articula estos dos campos, la estructura metafórica generada por el binomio [noce-mére]This article has a double intention. Firstly a theoric and methodological intention: it tries to demonstrate, on an extensive text open to several reading possibilities, that the paradigmatic concept of isotopic levels of the text must be substituted by a new conception of the poetry that takes into account the syntagmatic organization of those supposed levels.
